Back to the Blood Bank: A Quick Wee-Hour Street Tour

in Daily Blog17 days ago (edited)

New year, old treatment, old routines.
@manujune resumes her leukemia treatment Today and my part is to make sure she can get an early spot for consultation and treatment.

Mondays are busy days at the Municipal Blood Bank, so I am back in the streets at 3:00 am.

Even though my wife gets nervous every time I have to do this, not doing it may mean that they get the last spots (# 30-40) and that means leaving the Blood Bank close to 6 pm.

The three streets I walk to get there were unusually empty today.

There are usually a few people around Vargas hospital, and the usual homeless people or/and animals.

Today, only this white dog.
No coffee seller or the line for consultations.

No taxis, no street vendors, not even police (even though there is a station across the hospital).

The streets certainly look scary, but I have been doing this at least once a month since last April, so I have gotten used to it.

The thought of doing it for my daughter takes any fear out of my mind.

This will be @manujune's fifth month in the maintenance stage of her treatment and we are hoping that the upcoming political transition does not cause any interruption in the treatment.

Even though the medical personnel at this institución are devoted to their patients, any alteration derived from military intervention or violence might make it difficult for them to work and for patients to get here.

The lives of hundreds of patients depend on a peaceful change of government.

Actually, the lives of millions depend on it.

Thanks for stopping by
