Dear pregnant mummy, I am glad that you have not neglected the physiological changes which come with this pregnancy. You have done well by so doing but one thing so important that I want to remind you of today is your swelling feet and legs!! oh Yes, plot twist? I know right!
Should I ask, have you taken note of your sleeping position? Interesting right? Alright ma, let me grace your day with the benefit of sleeping on your left side and why it is the best position for you and your baby!

Shall we begin with the baby first? Sure! Sleeping on your left side helps to increase blood flow to the placenta, where your baby gets its own oxygen and nutrients.
What about the liver? This position discourages the uterus from lying on your liver, which is on the right, thus reducing pressure and discomfort and allowing better digestion while you enjoy your sleep! Isn’t this interesting? I’m sure you’re going to love it!!
Now, let me touch the most concentrating part of this story – your swelling legs and feet. Now listen carefully, as your baby continues to grow, the developing uterus presses on your bigger vessels especially the one we called the inferior vena cava which helps to return blood back to your heart. When this important vessel is compressed, it causes trouble and difficulties for the vessels located in your legs which help to drain blood back to your inferior vena cava. Since venous return is compromised, there is tendency for swelling to occur around your legs and foot!
You can see the reason why left-side lying is very important in this condition.
Truly, you may sleep on your back, but not for too long. Left side lying is the best position for you and your baby!! Give it a try today!
