Hello friends of Dayli Blog, I hope you had a nice day and weekend in the company of family and friends. I want to show you a beautiful tour I took through Old Havana, looking for a work from the XV Havana Biennial, which I had been told was in Plaza Vieja. I was in a hurry to find it because this artistic event ended on Saturday, so without thinking twice, on Friday I headed there.
Before arriving at the indicated place, I found a host of surprises that made me enjoy my tour even more. My route took me first along Calle de los Oficios, where, before reaching Calle Teniente Rey, I was struck by a living statue! It was motionless on one of the cannons embedded in the ground that adorn and protect this historic area from vehicular traffic. It remained inert during the time I was observing it, even when it did not know I was observing it, a silent testimony of street art and the patience it requires. A truly admirable work.
Hola amigos de Dayli Blog, espero que hayan pasado un lindo día y fin de semana en compañía de familiares y amigos. Quiero mostrarles un hermoso recorrido que realicé por La Habana Vieja, en busca de una obra de la XV Bienal de La Habana, que me habían dicho que estaba en la Plaza Vieja. Tenía prisa por encontrarla porque este evento artístico finalizaba el sábado, así que sin pensarlo dos veces, el viernes me dirigí hacia allí.
Antes de llegar al lugar indicado, me encontré con un sinfín de sorpresas que me hicieron disfrutar aún más de mi recorrido. Mi ruta me llevó primero por la Calle de los Oficios, donde, antes de llegar a la Calle Teniente Rey, me llamó la atención una ¡estatua viviente!, se encontraba inmóvil sobre uno de los cañones incrustados en el suelo que adornan y protegen esta histórica zona del tránsito vehicular. Permaneció inerte durante el tiempo que la estuve observando, inclusi cuando ella no sabia que la observaba, un testimonio silencioso del arte callejero y la paciencia que requiere. Una obra realmente admirable.
I continued my walk along Calle Teniente Rey, before reaching Plaza Vieja, I came across a fascinating historical vestige, the Zanja Real. An impressive work of engineering, the first aqueduct in Cuba, built in 1592 to supply the city from the Almendares River. On the wall there is a plaque that tells its history and its importance in the colonial life of Havana. Although today it is replaced by more modern systems, its remains transport us to the past, reminding us of the evolution of the city.
Continué mi paseo por la Calle Teniente Rey, antes de llegar a la Plaza Vieja, me topé con un fascinante vestigio histórico, la Zanja Real. Una impresionante obra de ingeniería, el primer acueducto de Cuba, construido en 1592 para abastecer a la ciudad desde el río Almendares. En la pared hay una placa que cuenta su historia y su importancia en la vida colonial de La Habana. Aunque hoy está sustituido por sistemas más modernos, sus restos nos transportan al pasado, recordándonos la evolución de la ciudad.
I finally arrived at Plaza Vieja, a place that I have already described in other posts, but that never ceases to captivate me. Its cobblestones, the beautiful fountain in the center, the colonial buildings with their arched and columned corridors with period lamps, everything in this square makes me feel like I am in an old tale, as if I were not living a real moment.
Finalmente llegué a la Plaza Vieja, un lugar que ya he descrito en otros posts, pero que nunca deja de cautivarme. Sus adoquines, la hermosa fuente en el centro, los edificios coloniales con sus pasillos de arcos y columnas con lámparas de la época, todo en esta plaza me hace sentir en un cuento antiguo, como si no estuviera viviendo un momento real.
And there it was, the work I was looking for: “Wooden Cloud. The Architecture of Desires”, by the German artist Martin Steinert. A work that invites the visitor to express their wishes and desires in the work itself. While I was looking at the messages already written – phrases like “life is beautiful” – I felt the fascination produced by this collective work, where the participation of the public completes the artistic experience. Unfortunately, I did not have a pencil with me to leave my own message, something I regret, because I would have liked to be part of this cloud of dreams and desires.I could only take the photos, see the wishes of others and continue admiring the surroundings.
Y allí estaba, la obra que buscaba: “Nube de madera. La arquitectura de los deseos”, del artista alemán Martin Steinert. Una obra que invita al visitante a expresar sus deseos y anhelos en la propia obra. Mientras observaba los mensajes ya escritos –frases como “la vida es bella”- sentí la fascinación que produce esta obra colectiva, donde la participación del público completa la experiencia artística. Lamentablemente no llevaba conmigo un lápiz para dejar mi propio mensaje, algo que lamento, pues me hubiera gustado ser parte de esta nube de sueños y deseos.Solo pude tomar las fotos, ver los deseos de los demás y seguir admirando el entorno.
On the corner of Teniente Rey and Mercader, in the yellow and white building of the Fénix Real Estate Agency, crowned by the only Camera Obscura in Cuba, which due to its altitude allows a panoramic view of the city, I noticed that at the entrance, several women in colorful period costumes greeted visitors, a scene that seemed taken from an old postcard, that is how magical this place is.
En la esquina de Teniente Rey y Mercader, en el edificio amarillo y blanco de la Inmobiliaria Fénix, coronado por la única Cámara Oscura de Cuba, que por su altitud permite una vista panorámica de la ciudad, noté que a la entrada, varias mujeres con coloridos trajes de época saludaban a los visitantes, una escena que parecía sacada de una postal antigua, así de mágico es este lugar.
This walk through Old Havana was much more than the search for a specific work of art; It was an encounter with history, colonial architecture, art and contemporary creativity, a beautiful journey. I hope you like it as much as I did, until next time!
