Hello, friends of Dayli Blog! Today I want to share with you an adventure that began with a small detour and ended with a great discovery in the streets of Havana.
My initial goal was to immerse myself in the atmosphere of the 15th Havana Biennial and admire the works that adorn the city. However, I took an unexpected turn. Instead of heading to the Malecón Habanero, where much of the Biennial is concentrated, I ventured towards Old Havana. And I don't regret it at all!
Searching for those artistic gems, I suddenly found myself in the Plaza de Armas. This square, the most emblematic of all the squares in Cuba, has a special charm that distinguishes it: a lush and majestic garden! It is the only one of the most important squares in Havana that establishes such a direct link with nature, and that, for me, is fascinating.
¡Hola, amigos de Dayli Blog! Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una aventura que comenzó con un pequeño desvío y terminó con un gran descubrimiento en las calles de La Habana.
Mi objetivo inicial era sumergirme en el ambiente de la 15 Bienal de La Habana y admirar las obras que engalanan la ciudad. Sin embargo, tomé un rumbo inesperado. En lugar de dirigirme al Malecón Habanero, donde se concentra gran parte de la Bienal, me aventuré hacia La Habana Vieja. ¡Y no me arrepiento en absoluto!
Buscando esas joyas artísticas , me encontré de repente en la Plaza de Armas. Esta plaza, la más emblemática de todas las plazas de Cuba, tiene un encanto especial que la distingue: ¡un jardín exuberante y majestuoso! Es la única de las plazas mas importntes de la habana que establece un vínculo tan directo con la naturaleza, y eso, para mí, es fascinante.
It was when I turned left that I got a total surprise. In front of me stood a giant, resplendent tree, made entirely of tin. It was the work of the French sculptor Daniel Hourdé, entitled “The tree of a thousand voices”! This imposing sculpture is 12 meters high and I must say that it was the most valuable find of my walk.
This tree, with a steel structure that holds books on its branches instead of fruit, is simply impressive. Like the leaves of a tree, which fly and spread throughout the world. The representation is beautiful and to me, who greatly appreciates literature, it seemed like a fantastic work.
Fue al girar a la izquierda cuando me llevé una sorpresa total. Frente a mí se alzaba un árbol gigante, resplandeciente, hecho totalmente de hojalatas. ¡Era obra del escultor francés Daniel Hourdé, titulada “El árbol de las mil voces”! Esta imponente escultura de 12 metros de altura y debo decir que fue el hallazgo más valioso de mi paseo.
Este árbol, con una estructura de acero que sostiene libros en sus ramas en lugar de frutos, es sencillamente impresionante. Como las hojas de un árbol, que vuelan y se extienden por el mundo. La representación es hermosa y a mí, que aprecio mucho la literatura, me pareció una obra fantástica.
After contemplating this artistic wonder, I took a closer look at the Plaza de Armas. In the center stands the monument to the Father of the Nation, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, sculpted in white marble. Around it, four small fountains, also made of white marble, constantly pour water, creating a fresh and relaxing atmosphere. The surrounding vegetation has thrived thanks to this constant humidity, covering the fountains with a green and vibrant blanket. The giant trees offer great shade, creating a fascinating contrast between the lush nature and the imposing colonial buildings that line the square.
Después de contemplar esta maravilla artística, me dediqué a recorrer con detalle la Plaza de Armas. En el centro se alza el monumento al Padre de la Patria, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, esculpido en mármol blanco. A su alrededor, cuatro pequeñas fuentes, también de mármol blanco, vierten agua constantemente, creando un ambiente fresco y relajante. La vegetación circundante ha prosperado gracias a esta humedad constante, cubriendo las fuentes con un manto verde y vibrante. Los árboles gigantes ofrecen una gran sombra, creando un fascinante contraste entre la exuberante naturaleza y los imponentes edificios coloniales que bordean la plaza.
Around the grove are marble benches that invite you to sit and enjoy the surroundings. The period street lamps add a touch of charm and nostalgia. Of all the street lamps I have seen in Havana, these are my favorites, they always catch my attention!
Alrededor de la arboleda estan colocados bancos de mármol que invitan a sentarse y disfrutar del entorno. Las farolas de época añaden un toque de encanto y nostalgia. De todas las farolas que he visto en La Habana, estas son mis favoritas, ¡siempre captan mi atención!
This important square is surrounded by some of the most emblematic buildings of the colonial era. The Castillo de la Real Fuerza is an architectural gem and one of the three castles that bear the city's coat of arms. The Templete, where the first mass and the first town hall of Havana were celebrated, is a sacred place for the people of Havana, who every November 16th queue to walk around the sacred tree. The Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, which currently houses the Museum of the City of Havana and the offices of the City Historian. The Palacio del Segundo Cabo, with its beautiful corridor of semicircular arches, is today an interactive museum that celebrates the union of Cuban and European culture.
Finally, the Palacio de los Condes de Santovenia, which houses the Hotel Santa Isabel, I adore its balconies and multicoloured stained glass windows. A true explosion of colour and elegance!
Esta importante plaza está rodeada por algunos de los edificios más emblemáticos de la época colonial. El Castillo de la Real Fuerza es una joya arquitectónica y uno de los tres castillos que llevan el escudo de la ciudad. El Templete, donde se celebró la primera misa y el primer cabildo de La Habana, es un lugar sagrado para los habaneros, que cada 16 de noviembre hacen cola para pasear alrededor del árbol sagrado. El Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, que actualmente alberga el Museo de la Ciudad de La Habana y las oficinas del Historiador de la Ciudad. El Palacio del Segundo Cabo, con su hermoso corredor de arcos de medio punto, es hoy un museo interactivo que celebra la unión de la cultura cubana y europea.
Por último, el Palacio de los Condes de Santovenia, que alberga el Hotel Santa Isabel, adoro sus balcones y vitrales multicolores. ¡Una verdadera explosión de color y elegancia!
As you could see, my unexpected detour through Old Havana gave me an unforgettable experience. I discovered a moving work of art and immersed myself in the beauty of the Plaza de Armas, which has unique examples of our colonial architecture. It was a nice walk where I linked art, history, nature and architecture. Until the next adventure!
