Hace mucho tiempo que no hago un post por aca, pero es por que durante todo el año pasado estaba preparando mi tesis, asi que hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una parte fundamental de mi recorrido académico y artístico: mi investigación de tesis y cómo esta dio origen a RED DE MENTIRAS, la obra que presenté en ARTIMAÑAS. En este post, exploraré cómo las fake news funcionan como dispositivos de control y cómo este concepto se materializó en una instalación interactiva y reactiva que invita a la reflexión. ¡Espero que lo disfruten y me encantaría leer sus opiniones! 💬

It's been a while since I last posted here, but that's because I was working on my thesis all last year. So today I want to share with you a fundamental part of my academic and artistic journey: my thesis research and how it gave rise to NETWORK OF LIES, the work I presented at ARTIMAÑAS. In this post, I'll explore how fake news functions as a means of control and how this concept materialized into an interactive, reactive, and thought-provoking installation. El arte y la investigación siempre han ido de la mano en mi recorrido académico, y mi tesis no fue la excepción. Mi proyecto de investigación se centró en las fake news como dispositivo de control en redes sociales, explorando cómo la viralización de noticias falsas moldea la percepción de la realidad. Este tema no solo me llevó a analizar estrategias de desinformación y su impacto social, sino que también despertó en mí la necesidad de traducir estos conceptos en una experiencia sensorial e interactiva. Así nació REACTIVA, la obra que presenté en la edición 2023 del festival ARTIMAÑAS, organizado por la Facultad de Artes.
Desde 2011, ARTIMAÑAS se ha consolidado como un espacio clave para el Taller de Diseño Multimedial, donde los estudiantes exhibimos nuestros trabajos finales de carrera. A través de un recorrido de obras multimediales, el festival invita a explorar narrativas interactivas que combinan imagen, sonido, texto y diseño para generar experiencias inmersivas. En esta edición, los proyectos abordaron desde la identidad y la memoria hasta la relación del ser humano con la tecnología, planteando preguntas críticas sobre nuestra sociedad digitalizada.
En este marco, RED DE MENTIRAS se presentó como una instalación multimedial que materializa la propagación de las fake news mediante la luz. La obra consiste en una esfera cubierta de titulares falsos que se iluminan progresivamente con la presencia del espectador. Utilizando un sensor ultrasónico y tiras de LED, la instalación simula cómo las noticias falsas cobran vida y se expanden con la interacción del público, replicando el efecto real que tienen en redes sociales. La luz, en este caso, no simboliza la verdad, sino el resplandor engañoso de la desinformación que se amplifica sin ser verificada.
Art and research have always gone hand in hand in my academic journey, and my thesis was no exception. My research project focused on fake news as a means of control on social media, exploring how the viralization of false news shapes the perception of reality. This topic not only led me to analyze disinformation strategies and their social impact, but also awakened in me the need to translate these concepts into a sensorial and interactive experience. This is how REACTIVA was born, the work I presented at the 2023 edition of the ARTIMAÑAS festival, organized by the Faculty of Arts.
Since 2011, ARTIMAÑAS has established itself as a key space for the Multimedia Design Workshop, where students exhibit their final projects. Through a tour of multimedia works, the festival invites you to explore interactive narratives that combine image, sound, text, and design to generate immersive experiences. In this edition, the projects ranged from identity and memory to the relationship between humans and technology, raising critical questions about our digitalized society.
Within this framework, NETWORK OF LIES was presented as a multimedia installation that materializes the spread of fake news through light. The work consists of a sphere covered in false headlines that progressively illuminate with the viewer's presence. Using an ultrasonic sensor and LED strips, the installation simulates how fake news comes to life and spreads with public interaction, replicating the real-life effect it has on social media. Light, in this case, does not symbolize truth, but rather the deceptive glare of disinformation that is amplified without verification.
Explicación de la obra
Esta instalación trata sobre las fake news, o noticias falsas, y cómo nos rodean en la vida diaria, especialmente en las redes sociales. Mi objetivo es que reflexionemos sobre lo fácil que es creer y compartir información sin verificar si es real.
Lo que ven aquí es una esfera cortada a la mitad, cubierta con fragmentos de noticias falsas creadas con inteligencia artificial, y tiras que simulan hilos de publicaciones en redes sociales como X. Esto representa cómo las noticias falsas están en todas partes y pueden ser muy difíciles de distinguir de la verdad.
La obra es interactiva. Pueden meter la mano dentro de la esfera y sacar una tarjeta. En un lado, encontrarán una noticia falsa, y en el otro, una advertencia que dice que no es real. También hay tarjetas con noticias verdaderas, para simbolizar que, a veces, encontrar la verdad requiere atravesar toda la confusión, investigar y mirar más allá.
Explanation of the Work
This installation is about fake news and how it surrounds us in our daily lives, especially on social media. My goal is to make us reflect on how easy it is to believe and share information without verifying its truth.
What you see here is a sphere cut in half, covered with fragments of fake news created with artificial intelligence, and strips that simulate threads of social media posts like X. This represents how fake news is everywhere and can be very difficult to distinguish from the truth.
The work is interactive. You can put your hand inside the sphere and pull out a card. On one side, you will find a fake news story, and on the other, a warning stating that it is not real. There are also cards with real news stories, to symbolize that sometimes finding the truth requires cutting through all the confusion, investigating, and looking beyond.
Las luces LED que se encienden al detectar movimiento representan cómo las noticias falsas se propagan, de a poco, hasta llegar a todos lados.
Con esta obra, quiero invitarlos a pensar en cómo interactúan con la información que ven en las redes, a preguntarse si lo que comparten es real o falso, y a ser más críticos con lo que consumen y comparten.
Desarrollar red de mentiras fue un desafío tanto técnico como conceptual. La parte técnica implicó trabajar con microcontroladores, sensores y programación para lograr el efecto deseado. Mientras que en el aspecto conceptual, fue fundamental investigar cómo las fake news afectan la opinión pública y qué estrategias visuales podían transmitir esta problemática de manera efectiva. No quería que la obra se limitara a una representación estática; quería que reaccionara, que dialogara con el espectador, que lo interpelara. Y así lo hizo: cada persona que se acercaba activaba la expansión de la luz, generando un efecto hipnótico que evidenciaba la facilidad con la que compartimos información sin cuestionarla.
The LED lights that turn on when they detect movement represent how fake news spreads, little by little, until it reaches everywhere.
With this work, I want to invite you to think about how you interact with the information you see on social media, to ask yourself if what you share is real or fake, and to be more critical about what you consume and share.
Developing "Network of Lies" was both a technical and conceptual challenge. The technical aspect involved working with microcontrollers, sensors, and programming to achieve the desired effect. On the conceptual side, it was essential to investigate how fake news affects public opinion and what visual strategies could effectively convey this issue. I didn't want the work to be limited to a static representation; I wanted it to react, to engage with the viewer, to challenge them. And so it did: each person who approached activated the expansion of the light, generating a hypnotic effect that demonstrated how easily we share information without question.
Presentar RED DE MENTIRAS en ARTIMAÑAS fue una experiencia enriquecedora. El diálogo con el público, las interpretaciones que surgieron y las conversaciones que se generaron alrededor de la obra reafirmaron la importancia de abordar estos temas desde la multimedia. Fue una oportunidad para demostrar cómo el arte digital y la interactividad pueden ser herramientas poderosas para la reflexión social.
Mi paso por ARTIMAÑAS y el desarrollo de esta obra no solo marcaron el cierre de mi etapa académica, sino que también dejaron en claro que la investigación y la experimentación seguirán siendo el motor de mi práctica artística y profesional. La multimedia nos permite construir nuevas formas de narrar, de cuestionar y de entender el mundo, y estoy segura de que seguiré explorando sus posibilidades en futuros proyectos.
Presenting NETWORK OF LIES at ARTIMAÑAS was an enriching experience. The dialogue with the audience, the interpretations that emerged, and the conversations generated around the work reaffirmed the importance of addressing these issues through multimedia. It was an opportunity to demonstrate how digital art and interactivity can be powerful tools for social reflection.
My time at ARTIMAÑAS and the development of this work not only marked the end of my academic career, but also made it clear that research and experimentation will continue to drive my artistic and professional practice. Multimedia allows us to construct new ways of narrating, questioning, and understanding the world, and I am confident that I will continue to explore its possibilities in future projects.
