Some of you spent your day going for hiking, swimming, work, eating, drinking, attending events and maybe having nice time at home.
But in preparation for the next planting season, after work today I spent my day in the farm, doing a skillful bush burning. The land was cleared, and I decided to use the weekend for stumping. However, the farm was littered with tree roots and old cassava stems. Since there was no designated place to discard them and clear the land for making mounds, I had no option but to resort to bush burning.
In modern farming practices, bush burning is generally discouraged due to its negative effects, such as ; Destruction of soil fertility, increased soil erosion, reduces soil moisture, contributes to climate change. Being aware of these consequences, I devised a method to minimize the impact rather than burning the entire farm at once.
THE TECHNIQUES THAT I USED
After stumping, I gathered all the tree roots, old cassava stems, and grasses into one spots within the farm. I then set fire on it instead of burning the entire farmland. This controlled burning method ensured that only small areas were affected while preserving the soil’s fertility and moisture content.
This technique is a more sustainable way to manage farm waste while maintaining soil quality for planting. You can also adopt this approach to bush burning and still keep your farmland fertile.
From the farm, I went home , arrange something to eat, then later shower and rest, preparing for the next day. So how did you spend your day, and have you practiced bush burning before ?
