Finding Guiding Lines in My Photos

in Daily Bloglast month

I have been watching a video by a photographer on how to make better panorama photos by using guiding lines. What do I mean by leading lines, you ask? Well, whenever he takes a photo, he always looks for lines that lead the viewer’s eyes to the main subject of his photos.

For example, when he takes a photo of a tree as a subject, he will find other objects to lead the viewer’s eyes to the tree. In this case, a road that goes from the foreground and stretches straight to where the tree is located.

Trying to apply this so-called new knowledge, I went to the park near my home. There was a statue in the middle of a pond of lotus flowers that I eagerly wanted to photograph.

I treated the edge of the pond, from where I took the photo of the statue, as the lines. So, if our eyes follow the pond's edge from the foreground, it will lead us to the statue. At least, that’s what I thought.

What do you think?

I took several photos just to look for the lines in this pond. There were many people there picnicking in the park, so it was hard to find my lines. I stayed until sunset, though.

On my way back home, I stopped by the side of the road as the sun descended in the west and took photos of the lines of the road. While this is a good example of lines, I don’t think it has a proper subject. I was thinking that I wanted to have the sunset as the subject, but the lines of the road don’t lead your eyes to it. Ah, I know the mistake: the sun is not positioned correctly! If the sun were positioned in the middle, where the road ends, that would be an ideal photo.

Well, I am looking for more lines now.
