Quaid i azam university introduced many cultural events to everyone. It introduced all those customs and traditions that were forgotten and fell into the bucket of amnesia. Such a forgotten traditional and folk festival is Lohri.
This event is largely celebrated in Punjab, Jammu, and in Himachal Pradesh. In the Punjab side of Pakistan, it is not seen as an official event. I have always heard and saw videos about it. My mind craved to revive this tradition that was taken away from traditions.
This festival is celebrated to mark the ending of winter and welcomes longer days with light of sun. In this festival, people sit down around bonfire(Lohri) and sing folk songs, perfom cultural dances like gidha, bhangra, luddi and distribute sweets among people.
I learned about lohri festival celebrations through whatsapp groups. Wave of smile and happiness welled in my mood. On 13th January, in the night, I walked to cultural ground on the back side of the main cafeteria. A crowd of people was settled down to observe the performances and to feel the festival.
Students were performing their parts. They were singing folk punjabi songs, and we all were clapping. My eyes were focusing on the pinkish kutra boys with dhol and musical instruments. My heart was waiting for their performances.
Everyone over there received sweets and nuts. It was a sweet gesture, but i was expecting other sweets like rasgulla.
We all friends were sitting together and enjoying the jokes of each other. Along with jokes and conversations, We were also enjoying the performances.
These colors of kurta were our identity and mark of presence, but now standards have changed. People have shifted their prefrences and living styles. We all are becoming more and more modernized.
Folk dance started, which is "luddi." Patterned and synchronized dance moves around the bonfire of lori. Lowering your hands down and then raising up. I am unable to encode these proper dance moves in cage of words, but it's okay.
The sound of dhol and clarinet was giving me a vibe of wedding ceremony. It's vibrant and colorful with starry lights on the entrance.
Believe me, dance was trying to come out of me, but i tried to confirm myself and reminded myself – it's not an appropriate place to show your dance moves.
We all friends are taking as many clicks as possible. I don't know whether these moments will forever last in my eyes or not, but we are trying to save these fleeting moments in our devices.
In the future, when time will ring harsh or having a down moment, then i will look at these smiling faces with a cheerful smile. I will miss them. These days, my mission is to live and relive every second that is flying.
Almost every one of my acquisition was gone as they started feeling bore. In the end, I also decided to walk back to my hostel. Night was preceding, and chilling was striking me. I walked back from the night.
