THE MIND BODY PROBLEM

The human person is a complex being, so complex that some tend to believe that s/he is some sort of metaphysical being. Being a Christian, I tend to believe that too. But then, if I may put religion aside, it sometimes seem like the brain is powerful enough to initiate most of the functions that are associated to the metaphysical mind. That notwithstanding, there are still many questions with regards to the mind left unanswered.

No matter how much we provide physical answers for what seem to be metaphysical, the human person never stops having feelings of a metaphysical self; a self other than the brain. This very fact explains why any answer given by science on the nature of the mind might never be sufficient.

WHAT REALLY IS THE MIND

Given the nature of the subject matter, it is absolutely impossible to give a generally accepted definition of the mind. As a matter of fact, the concept 'mind' is so complex that it generates an unending debate among philosophers, psychologists and even neurologists. Notwithstanding the long existing debate, the fact that the mind has to do with consciousness is generally accepted. For the purpose of this writing, I will prefer not to propose any definition. I simply want to consider the mind as that which brings about consciousness.

IS THE MIND PHYSICAL OR METAPHYSICAL?

Whether the mind is physical or metaphysical remains the core reason behind the unending debate that has been raised. It is on this basis that I certainly will not be able to give a sufficient answer to the question that is being raised. The mind body problem is a problem that tends to refer the mind to the metaphysical, a completely distinct entity from the brain. Given the nature of science, there is no debate to be considered in this matter. This is as a result of the fact that science dismisses metaphysical reality of any form. In short, the human person is purely a physical entity as far as science is concerned. Given how far neuroscience has gone and the fact that most formerly tagged metaphysical functions have been associated to the physical brain, it becomes even more difficult to back up the metaphysical claim. That notwithstanding, the human person in all these have this innate feeling of a metaphysical self. It is probably the case then that we cannot completely dismiss the metaphysical mind not withstanding scientific proves.

CONCLUSION

It is probably the case that I have established absolutely nothing in this writing since even my aim to define the mind was defeated. That notwithstanding, the aim of my writing was not defeated. I aimed at writing on the concept mind and I guess my aim was not defeated. The problem on the other hand is simply based on the fact that the mind is a complex concept. It is a concept that has been understood and interpreted in multiple ways by different schools, scholars and even movements. I am only a young trying to acknowledge that very fact...
