What if I told you that my favorite meal is beans? It might shock you because it’s not common for someone to overlook all the delicious meals in the world and settle for beans. It’s not my fault—I just grew fond of beans, and I’ve liked it and still love it.
The beans I’m talking about is the white beans, the most common type in Nigeria, if I’m not mistaken. I could skip any other meal to settle for it, and that’s just the truth.
Why Beans?
First of all, I chose this meal based on very calculated terms because it’s not actually the most delicious meal on this planet. The following are the reasons that made me go for beans:
- It’s an Embodiment of Protein:
In my neighborhood, the most common type of food we eat is always carbohydrates, which, most of the time, make up 90% of our meals. Okay, let me make it personal—I grew up eating carbohydrates almost every day, and I needed a food that would balance things out. I needed a food that would at least equalize the carbohydrate intake, and that’s where beans, a very good source of protein, came into play.
I don’t know about you, but for me, I’m very considerate about the food I eat. I got fond of beans because it provides the protein that is usually lacking in my meals. I’m not saying I don’t eat protein along with carbohydrates, I do, such as meat and fish, but these usually come in small quantities, while carbohydrates take the larger portion.
- It Takes Fewer Ingredients to Cook:
Beans, to me, is delicious no matter how it's prepared, unlike the much-talked-about and liked food, rice. I want to compare beans to rice a lot.

Personally, I don’t fancy rice when it’s cooked casually. I don’t find it delicious at all, even if it tastes good to others. For me, it can never taste sweet unless prepared in a certain way. For instance, casual jollof rice doesn’t appeal to me. If rice isn’t prepared in a standard way with fish, meat, tomatoes, etc., it’s not appealing.
But beans? No matter how it’s cooked, it’s very acceptable to me because it has its original taste. I can easily cook beans with just a few ingredients, something I can’t dare to do with most other foods, and it will still turn out very nice to me.
- It Doesn’t Disturb My Body System:
Another thing that makes me love beans so much is how it doesn’t disturb my body system, unlike the complaints I hear from many people. Some of my siblings can’t dream of eating beans at night for dinner because it will give them a runny stomach throughout the night. But for me, I can eat it anytime and still feel very okay.

Beans is obviously a good food. Although, I don't eat it that much as before unless I want something that can last in my stomach for a long period of time so i won't get hungry very fast. But then I do eat it with bread and never alone.
