We are humans, and with the way we are created, we are bound to forget things. We are not machines; even machines, when overloaded, sometimes get heated and start mixing up or missing out on files.
I'm not chronically forgetful, but I do experience it on a regular basis. What I keep praying for is never to suffer a huge loss or damage because of it, as I have experienced many times in the past.
One of the most memorable instances, though a negative one though, where forgetfulness caused me significant loss was when I was working in a tile company. I had recently graduated from school and needed a job to help me save some money.
My job was to keep records of production, distribution, and sales. At the end of the day, just like every other business, I had to collate everything and close the records for the day.
One of those days, a day I cannot forget in a hurry, they took many cartons of tiles to distribute to various retail shops in town. I had the record in my head and decided to put it down in the records toward the end of the day. At that moment, I was watching a match on my phone. I was streaming a Premier League match (it was a Saturday), and when closing time came, I completely forgot to add the record to the closing reports.
The following day was Sunday, so there was no work. When Monday arrived, my manager was going through Saturday's records. I got called to his office for some questioning about my previous record, and I answered confidently, believing I had made no mistakes. However, he pointed out the missing record, and on the spot, I was dumbfounded. It was a mess-up already, and I started begging for forgiveness.
The manager was a very straightforward person. He said he would deduct 40 percent of my salary, and yes, he did it, even after many pleas. I really felt the reduction, but I had to accept it as the price of my forgetfulness. My salary then was N30,000, and what I got paid that month was N18,000. That month felt like a joke to me—imagine earning N18,000 from an initial salary of N30,000. That was a big mess.
No one needed to tell me to sit up and be mindful of my forgetfulness.
Thank you!
