5 Simple Things I’m Grateful For (That You Might Overlook Too)

There is a Yoruba saying that translates if you are grateful for the little that was done today you are sure to receive something way bigger the day that follows.

This has been my guiding principle over the years, owing to the fact that I grew up in a strong Yoruba family. The kind of family that even if someone is older than you with 1 second, to you he's boda (brother) you dare not refer to them by their name, if not you'd receive the scolding of your life.

The same family that when your parents pay your school fee which you would feel is their responsibility, you would be summoned the next day and quizzed why you didn't show appreciation.

At some point I felt they were just being over the top until I became older, I saw that I started to lean towards their ideology maybe not 100% but to a large extent. Don't blame me.

I was exposed to a world where everyone has a strong sense of entitlement it was really hard to see people who genuinely express gratitude, sometimes I go...

I wish I could bring my Dad back to life and tell him thank you for the nights he'd wake me up to give solid advice about how life would become and the way I need to tackle them, I can literally hear his voice ringing in my head right now he'd always end his sessions with "these aren't things you'd use now, they will only make sense to you in the next 10 years".
And boy oh boy! He was so right.

However, beyond saying thank you to people or putting a smile on our faces when someone does something for us or gifts us our favourite bar of chocolate. We as human beings are to express gratitude for the life that we have. Yes, I know it's not as beautiful as you'd like but guess what... There's someone out there who has it worse than you do.

This shouldn't be a motivation but sometimes we need to tell ourselves these things.

Here are some things I'm grateful for today:

  1. My Life ( 3 major surgeries but I am still here)
  2. The gift of Family and Love.
  3. The gift of Friends and Association
  4. The gift of having a steady source of income.
  5. The gift of Hive. (this is something I am genuinely grateful for, I get to share my craft, feel appreciated and also make some money from it. Tell me what feels better, I will wait... See? Nothing)

I will like to hear from you, what is/are the things you are grateful for today?
