In a hall filled to the brim with a congregation of men, women, young and old, seated on the pew and iently waiting to be addressed by the speaker. Minutes ticked by, and hours h passed but still no sign of you. Hence, their curiosity was piqued with a burning desire to know who was taking pleasure in delaying them. Hence, they fastened their eyes on the door, hoping you'd reach out to the doorknob and flung the door open at any moment.
And there you are!
Wearing pairs of silhouettes that knock the floor at each step,
With a shoulder that hung high in the air,
Putting on a broad bright smile at every face that caught your eyes and waving your hands as you walk down the aisle, approaching the podium.
Clapping was lapping, and the roaring from the audience continued as they rose on their feet to welcome you into their midst.
Their overlapping noises persisted, and you stood right in front of them in awe, wondering about what could have caused such a great outturn.
Wander no more, It's confidence speaking!
Many times, people tend to interchangeably use the two words "Confidence and Self-esteem" I guess the reason for the wrong usage is because, both words possess similar features that make them appear interwoven. In an attempt to shed more light on these concepts, let's get ourselves acquainted with the meaning of these words to avoid further contradictions.
What Is Confidence?
Confidence is an act of believing in one's abilities, skills, and actions. It encompasses other traits like assertiveness, self-awareness, resilience, risk-taking, etc
On the other hand, Self esteem is an individual's perceived importance and value. It comprises components such as self-awareness, self-respect, and self-acceptance.
Self-esteem can be further categorized into low self-esteem and high self-esteem.
- Low Self Esteem: This refers to a negative evaluation of oneself examples are, self-doubt, insecurities, negative self-image, etc
People mostly suffer from low self-esteem as a result of unhealthy upbringing as a child, trauma from past failures, self-criticism, neglect, feelings of inadequacy or incompetence, fear of failure, and being in a toxic or abusive relationship, among others.
An individual with an altered self-esteem can not feel confident in himself or herself even when other people do believe in them.
A child who is a dumping ground for his or her parent's verbal abuse will grow up with little or no self-esteem in his adulthood days except if post-cautionary measures are implemented.
- High Self-Esteem: This has to do with a positive and realistic appraisal of oneself. Examples are confidence, positive self-image motivation, goal-oriented, etc.
An individual with high self-esteem can literally do anything, they're people that no stumbling block can impede them from not achieving their goals, they see the bright side of every dark situation.
Individuals with high self-esteem are characterized by, emotional intelligence, healthy relationships, realistic self-expectation, emotional stability, positive self-talk, etc
Conclusively, self-esteem and confidence are important concepts every growing individual should infuse into their lifestyle to have a more promising and fulfilled life. A true understanding of their meanings, distinctions, and relationships will make individuals know where they're falling short and strive to improve where necessary.
