Empathy is an important quality that is lost in our society today. The ability to understand and share the feelings of another person is one thing nobody or a smaller number of people want to do in this present generation. You hear people saying they are less concerned about what another person is going through; we all do things that please us, not minding those we hurt in the process. Empathy fosters support, kindness, and compassion; it helps in building a stronger relationship among individuals and societies.
The ability to put oneself in another person's shoes helps reduce conflict and prevent arguments from escalating; instead of getting annoyed or feeling offended, we tend to see from their perspectives and just be calm to allow peace to reign. Empathy is also a good factor in reducing stress both physically and mentally. From my point of view, empathy also makes one a better listener; it makes one more attentive and less focused on what to say next. This way, others feel loved, cared for, valued, heard, and more willing to open up. All these help build more trust, care, and mutual understanding among individuals and society at large.
In a society ruled with empathy, there will be just, equitable, and compassionate judgment where everyone will understand one another better. It will also widen one another's perspectives about life because, in this process, different life experiences will be shared, which will make agreeing an easy task instead of resulting in fights or conflicts. Empathy is a learnable ability that one can develop over time. Listening to other people's side of the story without making a snap judgment takes effort; a selfish individual cannot exhibit empathy. What one sees as a privilege and an opportunity in a platter of gold is another person's reality.
Volunteering to help those in need, creating workshops to help ourselves develop new skills, and having respectful discussions with people different from us are ways to show empathy. It takes a selfless heart to show empathy; gone are the days when people were willing to sacrifice so much for humanity's sake. In today's world, helping or empathy comes with what you have to offer in return. In a case where you are handicapped to reciprocate any act of kindness shown towards you, getting lifted when you fall will be a tug of war, leaving everyone to face their lives and struggling to make ends meet and end well when help seems not to come.
The power of empathy is so intense that it reduces conflicts, promotes health and well-being, and creates a world where all people feel recognized and cared for. While challenging at times, making empathy a priority results in a society rooted in kindness, equity, and human dignity for all. In such a society, there wouldn't be evil acts such as kidnapping, abduction, murder, slavery, and the like. Peaceful co-existence will be visible with a good relationship and rapport between people of different tribes, ethnic groups, and races; there wouldn't be a case of racism, which might lead to war or the loss of lives and properties.
