SPREADING LOVE // THE CHRISTMAS IDEA

The Christmas season is one that comes highly anticipated by many. It's a time that means different things to different people, and high on that list is the love and giving that hangs in the atmosphere and lights us all up.

When I was younger, even up until date, I always got excited when Christmas was approaching. As a kid, I looked forward to the outfits that my parents would get me and importantly, to travelling down to the village with my family where I would reunite with my cousins and other extended family members. Our time together was always memorable.

As I grew older, even as I no longer feel that same excitement for outfits, I long for the holiday break so that I could spend time with the entire family altogether.

There are many things that people could try to do within this season. After all, it's a time for catching fun and participating in thrilling activities. I don't think that there's any suggestion that I would make, which is not already being implemented. However, one thing that most of us grew up doing that filled us with so much warmth was the act of sharing and showing love.

I remember that, back then, once it was Christmas day, we always had more than enough than we could finish. Most of these food and drink gifts were from other family members or friends or even neighbors. My mother would dish food into different plates and, one by one, instruct my siblings and I on the persons/homes to take each meal to. This gesture was always returned. It didn't matter if the person you're taking the meal/drinks/meat to had much more than you do. It was the moment and thoughtfulness that mattered. This act brought people together.

It's not so much in practice nowadays. I always look forward to it, but it isn't as it was. Aside from the meals on Christmas day. It was common then to give food items and clothing and monetary gifts to people who were in need, be it random people in the neighborhood, gifting the widows/widower, going by orphanges, etc.. Sometimes, even to people who weren't in need. This connected us as one people.

The act, as I grew to learn, showed the true meaning of the season. Even kids learned to share and give happily. It was one of the most exciting activities of the season, and I really hope that we all consider resuming the act(in whatever capacity) or taking it up as it's a means to spread love.
