Childhood Memories - I Was a Bully

Earlier this week on c/hive-reachout, I talked about one of my fondest childhood memories. (Read It here: https://peakd.com/hive-178437/@tayo6/my-best-childhood-memory) It was good to recall those moments, but one moment kept haunting me. At this stage of my life, I don't know what to make of this memory.

When I was in primary 4 (I think), there was this kid in primary 3 (maybe 2) that I felt was mysterious. I can't say why, I just knew there was something about her.

One day, we went down the stairs with my friends at break time and I was in a hurry to go and buy taliya (locally made pasta). Just before I got to the foot of the stairs, someone stepped on the back of my brown rubber sandals. I lurched forward violently, almost falling over but I quickly held on to the rails to keep from falling.

As I straightened up, I noticed that the strap of my sandal was broken. I started to shrug it off, thinking it was either Sadiq, Rayyan, or Sam who stepped on me from behind, then I heard a shrill voice say “Sorry!”

I turned to look at Shrill Voice. Shrill Voice was the mysterious girl I liked seeing around! I can't explain what happened the couple of seconds I was mute. With an equally small voice, I asked her to fix my sandal.

Shrill Voice looked at me, teary eyed, pleading that I spare her as she has no money to spare. The money in her hand was for her breakfast. Sam advised me to take the money. I felt reluctant, but I asked her to give me the money, anyway. Sadiq (God rest his soul) restrained me. He had always been the sage-like one in the group.

Sam was a daredevil, Rayyan kind of looks up to me, so he was equally goofy. Sadiq was the voice of reason. He was the one who always told us to go back to class before the bell for the end of break time goes. He took his schoolwork seriously, much more than can be said for the rest of us.

“You can't take her breakfast money,” I remember Sadiq telling me. I was relieved by his conscientious words. I immediately told Shrill Voice to ensure she told her parents to give her money for fixing my broken sandal.

At home, my mum beat me bad for ‘destroying’ a sandal that was barely two weeks old. She refused to get it fixed and told me that I had to wear the broken sandal for the rest of the term.

For the next few days, I dragged my right foot when I walked because of the sandals. This also meant that my right sock was frequently dirty. Somehow, Shrill Voice disappeared from school. No, she didn't stop coming to school, I just did not happen to run into her, partly because I did not want to confront her. She also was avoiding me, like a criminal evading arrest.

Then I started laying an ambush for her. For the next few days, I'd wait in front of her class; she, seeing me there, would not leave her class to go eat outside. These made her go the entire school day hungry, I reckoned, since I also went hungry. Then I stopped going to her for obvious reasons.

One particular Friday, I saw her again. She was climbing down the flight of steps at break time while I was climbing up to get back to class to sit out the break since I'd used my money for snacks to fix my broken sandal that morning.

Before I could say a word, Shrilly whipped out money, a five naira note, and stretched it towards me. Her sudden action forced a sudden reaction out of me. I nodded my head sideways and told her not to bother!

Why I did that, I don't know but the very next Monday, I saw her again. By the same steps again! Sam and Rayyan were with me. I walked past her but Sam accosted her. Of course I also walked back and demanded that she paid for the damage she did to my sandal. Shrilly was defiant.

“I paid your friend on Friday,” she said, her shrill voice rising a couple of decibels higher than usual, “but he refused to accept it.” There was nothing else to say so I turned and left. Sam went back to class. Rayyan walked with Shrilly to her class and kept to himself for the rest of the week.

We all have anecdotes and memories of childhood moments that make us laugh when we look back, I remember I had some classmates older than me and let's say precocious, once one of them made me so angry that we ended up in a slapping fight, but she learned to respect me.

This seems like a love ♥️ story not completely told 😂😂

Trust me, it ended there, sir😂😂
I was only a child!
