My Favourite Dish - It Tried to Kill Me Several Times II

Have you ever been so tired but still said to yourself that you must have your favourite dish?

Thinking about beans😓

As I walked home from theatre rehearsals that night in 2016, I began to contemplate what I'd eat when I got home. I was taking a course titled “Theatre History and Workshop”. The course requirements include a practical production of a published drama text. My group would enact “Anowa” by Ama Ata Audio. The fact that the play was set in a foreign culture made it difficult to get together, so by the time lecturers went on strike, we seized the opportunity to rehearse well. That evening we'd rehearsed for about 12 including a total of 4-hour breaks. We ended the rehearsal at about 9pm and I walked home speculating.

Production day. Anowa and her Kofi Ako (Me)

I could just buy sugar and peanuts to take with garri, but my love for beans overwhelmed my rationality. A few minutes after I got home, I decided to cook beans. I lit the kerosene stove, put water on fire and started to pick dirt from the beans. I slept off for about 20 minutes, then I woke up and poured the beans into the pot. I immediately started picking out my ingredients. Pepper, salt, etc. I spotted smoked fish in the kitchen cabinet. I added some to the mix and waited for the food to cook!

While I waited, I began to read Amos Tutuola’s Palmwine Drinkard to kill time. A tired body and mind is cooking food in his one room apartment, reading one of the most terrible books in the history of African literature. Naturally, I slept off. It wasn't intentional, I tried to stay awake. But I slept off still. Tutuola's narrative was both scary and boring, it lulled me to sleep. Or maybe it was just tiredness from acting and dancing all day.

I'm not in love with sleep, I promise

I woke up with a cough, I sweated profusely. I was hoping the smell I perceived wasn't what I was thinking, I rushed to open the pot. Lo, I didn't believe what I saw. Black bean-like things clung to the inside walls of the pot! I had burnt the beans I so much craved for. I checked the time. It was past 12am. I slept off for close to two hours without checking what I was cooking.

But I was still hungry, even more hungry than I felt when I got home. I still craved bean porridge. I used a spoon to scrape the top of the food in the pot. I added palm oil to it and proceeded to eat my burnt porridge.

my love for beans is great! It is a good food but you what? I don't know how to cook food ooo🤣

Wow it's really good too see your a lover of beans. It's a nice food to consume

Really nice, especially if well cooked with enough pepper and some aquatic condiments.

I have escaped burning the house due to this kind of accident bro, it was the smoke from the burning beans that woke me up also.

It was the last time I ever cooked anything so late. A neighbour also perceived the smell that day and tried to call me on phone but my phone was switched off. She was about to knock on my door when she heard me coughing.
