I was a moderator at an illustration workshop on campus. The speaker is an artist. He arrived on campus and I was required to accompany him, before the event started. I took him around the campus, not yet half of our campus around, the artist commented on the buildings on the UIN Ar-Raniry campus, Banda Aceh, Indonesia, "the buildings here are all uniform, too Islamic, like the name of the campus, Islamic university. "
Indeed, the aesthetics of the buildings on my campus are mostly uniform (look pic above), using a mosque aesthetic-patterned façade and white light brown painted, at some points some are painted green. And this campus is very beautiful with lots of plants that support green architecture.
However, in the last two years, the construction of new buildings, which are not uniform. These buildings, stand on the south side of the campus. I don't know for sure what causes this building to not be uniform, but in my opinion, this is because the architect is different and it was also built after the Tsunami disaster in Aceh. There is a need for buildings that are not uniform, so that the landscape of a compound does not look bored. However, the building that I will review is too striking from the other buildings.
This is the building of the Faculty of Psychology UIN Ar-Raniry:
If seen, this psychology building, a combination of classical and modern architectural styles. With its main color purple, the building looks luxurious. When viewed from above, with a bird's eye view, it is divided into two parts, with the ladder connecting the two parts.

Why do I say a combination of classical and modern architecture?
In my opinion, the black and white motif on the facade of the corridor that makes it look like classical architecture and glass in the center plays a modern role. Glass domination is identical to modern, as we see in other modern magnificent buildings.
Also, take a look at the staircase design designed by the architect, crisscrossing each other. Some psychology students I saw at that time said it was the first time he had seen such a staircase design.
The use of color in this building, according to some psychology students I asked, has its own meaning, but on average they don't know the continuation of that meaning. However, according to the literature I read, the color purple brings excitement to people in psychology.
note: the first photo I published on my Instagram; https://www.instagram.com/p/B3chHz9Be4e/?igshid=nebjmzw3ztbd
The color purple is associated with royalty. So, I guess the new architect of this building intentionally used that color to make it unique, more elegant, luxurious, and to let it stand out as an architectural feature. It's also a creative way to differentiate itself from the monotony of the usual traditional design features found in the area.
