The Church "Our Lady of Chiquinquirá", the biggest church in Caracas

Dear friends of the communities that make up HIVE. Today I am going to introduce you to the largest Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela. I had the privilege of attending the temple and taking photos inside it, which I did not only for my personal joy, but also thinking of sharing with you this magnificent temple that being very architecturally rich is, at the same time, very humble aesthetically inside. All photos are my own.

Main entrance or portico of the Church (Entrada principal o pórtico de la Iglesia)

The grandiose Catholic church of Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá, built between 1942 and 1958 in the La Florida urbanization, in the city of Caracas, Venezuela, was built in a neo-Romanesque style with a maximum height of its bell tower of 47 meters. It was inaugurated in principle in 1957, although after undergoing certain modifications, such as the expansion of the main nave and the construction of the bell tower, it was re-inaugurated in 1959.

The imposing 47-meter-high Bell Tower (El imponente Campanario de 47 metros de altura)

The congregation of the "Capuchin Younger Brothers" are responsible for the church, who take care of it with great dedication and care. On one side of the church is the Colegio San Antonio de la Florida, which has been linked to the church since its construction. In addition, in the back they have erected a building that houses a pharmacy, offices for use by the congregation and even has medical services for the community of neighbors.

Beautiful columns in the portico, structural support of the Church (Bellas

The Church was built on the land that was previously occupied by the La Florida Club, until 1942 and after the Instituto Escuela until 1945, later the old church La Chiquinquirá was built, which was very small with two floors, with wooden seats, which was demolished at the end of the 50s to start the construction of the one that I present to you today.

el púlpito al fondo)

The consecration of the church was carried out in 1958. It measures 84 meters long and 35 meters wide, as can be seen by the measurements, it is a monumental temple, it is considered the largest in the city, with a higher capacity for parishioners seated to 1000 people. The total area occupied by the church, with its pedestrian areas and parking, is 2940 square meters.

.

There is a dispute over who is the original designer of the work, on the one hand, it is conferred on Manuel Mujica Millán for a 1945 design, while other authorized voices attribute it to the engineer Edgar Pardo Stolck, who, it is claimed, had the collaboration of the young German architect Frederich Schwertle Stegerer, who was passing through the country. It is also said that Stolck was supposedly inspired by the Duomo of Milan and that he had as a reference the project presented by Mujica Millán. What is certain is that the Covica company was in charge of its construction, directed by the engineer Roberto Insausti.

Colegio San Antonio de la Florida, next to the Church (Colegio San Antonio de la Florida, a un costado de la Iglesia)

The main facade of the church is really spectacular, the atrium or portico has carved wooden doors, with concrete columns where religious figures have been carved, the roof of the atrium is very simple oval. Once inside the church, you can see its three long and spacious naves, the ceilings with giant stained-glass windows that allow a dim light to enter. The chairs arranged in three rows, mainly in the central nave, are all identical. The Via Crucis is not made of stained glass, or carved in wood, as in most churches in Venezuela, but rather a series of paintings displayed on the side walls of the church.

Side entrance of the church (Entrada lateral de la iglesia)

The Baptismal Font of the church was built by the marble work of Italo Roversi Monaco, an Italian sculptor settled in Venezuela since the beginning of the 20th century. On the one hand, Jesús Mendoza, who sculpted the bowl of the basin in white Carrara marble, contributed to its manufacture, and on the other hand, Pedro Rangel, a master blacksmith, who was in charge of manufacturing the metal foot in wrought iron.

I do not think it necessary to say the peace that one feels when being inside a church of these characteristics, without anything strident to distract you and, in this way, one can concentrate on filling oneself with spirituality.

Atrium or portico of the Church (Atrio o pórtico de la Iglesia)

image.png
Left lateral nave, note the numerous confessionals, located in both wings
side of the church (Nave lateral izquierda, nótese los numerosos confesionarios, ubicados

image.png
Back of the High Altar (Parte trasera del Altar mayor)

image.png
Right side nave of the church (Nave lateral derecha

image.png

Hello dear colleague and friend, it is one thing to be spiritual and quite another to be a religious fanatic. You summarize religiosity and tolerance in your actions, which very rarely go together. Thank you for your comment. Receive a hug

Hello stefano.massari, it has been a pleasure to have shared with you the post of this beautiful church. Happy weekend

I love the simplicity of the interior of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, minimal yet impressive.

Hello friend afterglow, just like you I love the interior simplicity of the church, contrasting with the monumental architectural work of the building.
