A few days ago we were talking about the corners and buildings surrounding the Plaza Bolivar in Caracas, you can read the post here, and I promised to go a little deeper into each building portrayed, so here I bring the post of one of the cute and tender buildings surrounding the square. It is the Casa del Vínculo y del Retorno. A house that was a little neglected and to which they snatched meters of construction, during the time when history was not important in my country.
This house is located on the Gradilla corner, on the southeast corner of Plaza Bolivar. From the outside it looks like it has two floors, but when you enter you notice that the reality is very different. It is a construction of the mid-eighteenth century and is linked to the independence of Venezuela, not only was the residence of Simon Bolivar, when he married Maria Teresa del Toro in Spain, from July 1802 to January 1803. It also served as lodging for Francisco de Miranda in 1810, and was the place where the Act of Independence of 1811 was printed for the first time.
Hace unos días estuvimos hablando de las esquinas y edificios que rodean la Plaza Bolívar de Caracas, pueden leer el post aquí, y prometí profundizar un poco en cada edificio retratado, pues aquí traigo el post de uno de los lindos y tiernos edificios que rodean la plaza. Se trata de la Casa del Vínculo y del Retorno. Una casa que estuvo un poco descuidada y a la que le arrebataron metros de construcción, durante el tiempo en que la historia no era importante en mi país.
Esta casa está ubicada en la esquina Gradilla, en la esquina sureste de la Plaza Bolívar. Por fuera parece que tuviese dos pisos, pero cuando entras notas que la realidad es muy diferente. Es una construcción de mediados del siglo XVIII y está ligada a la gesta independentista de Venezuela, no solo fue la residencia de Simón Bolívar, al contraer nupcias con María Teresa del Toro en España, desde julio de 1802 hasta enero de 1803. También sirvió de alojamiento para Francisco de Miranda en 1810, y fue el lugar donde se imprimió por primera vez el Acta de la Independencia de 1811.
Because of its natural importance for having given shelter to such illustrious Venezuelans, for me it is an honor and a pleasure to show this small space, which has centuries of history, and its restoration resulted, not only in a beautiful museum, but also a place where thanks to excavations (archaeological?) were found numerous artifacts of the time, such as nails, bolts, ceramics, slabs, etc..
In a country like mine, where the house where Francisco de Miranda was born was demolished to build a theater (just as beautiful) but without respect for those of us who love not only the figure of Miranda but also the historical and artistic legacy, it is a privilege to have a house out of the catacombs to begin to be part of the imaginary of the historic Caracas that refuses to die.
Por su natural importancia al haber dado cobijo a tan ilustres venezolanos, para mi es un honor y un placer mostrar este pequeño espacio, que tiene siglos de historia, y su restauración dio como resultado, no solo un hermoso museo, también un lugar donde gracias a las excavaciones (¿arqueológicas?) fueron encontrados numerosos artefactos de la época, como clavos, pernos, cerámicas, losas, etc.
En un país como el mío, donde la casa natal de Francisco de Miranda fue derrumbada para construir un teatro (igual de hermoso) pero sin respetar a quienes somos amantes no solo de la figura de Miranda sino también del legado histórico y artístico, es un privilegio poder contar con una casa salida de las catacumbas para comenzar a formar parte del imaginario de la Caracas histórica que se niega a morir.

The house was so destroyed that the restoration consisted of exposing some fragments of the old construction that remained almost intact. In these fragments we can observe the decorative resources in fashion for the time: wallpaper, moldings, lintels, as well as the material used for the construction. I searched tirelessly for images of the previous state of the house, without success, but it is most likely that it was used as a warehouse for some trade in the area in the years prior to its reconstruction.
Even so, this prodigy was preserved despite the fact that many square meters were taken away from the original construction. At the end of this publication we can see a video of what the original case looked like, according to projections of Fundapatrimonio, the entity in charge of bringing back the memory and the past to our days.
La casa estaba tan destruida, que la restauración consistió en exponer algunos fragmentos de la antigua construcción que permanecieron casi intactas. En estos fragmentos podemos observar los recursos decorativos de moda para la época: el papel tapiz, las molduras, dinteles, así como el material empleado para la construcción. Busqué incansablemente imágenes del estado anterior de la casa, sin éxito, pero lo más probable es que se usara como almacén de algún comercio de la zona en los años anteriores a su reconstrucción.
Aún así, este prodigio se conservó pese a ser arrebatados muchos metros cuadrados a la construcción original. Al final de esta publicación podemos ver un video de como era la caso original, según proyecciones de Fundapatrimonio, el ente encargado de traer de vuelta la memoria y el pasado hasta nuestros días.

The records of those who worked on the construction and execution of Simón Bolívar's matrimonial house are not preserved, it is only known that it belonged to the Liberator's godfather (Juan Jerez de Aristigueta), from whom he inherited the property. After the death of his wife, in 1803. The property became part of the events that took place to achieve the independence of Venezuela. So it was the seat of the Venezuelan Government when the separation from Gran Colombia began.
The house-museum presents a photographic exhibition of the restoration process that took place, as well as several historical facts linked to this house.
No conservan los registros de quienes trabajaron en la obra y ejecución de la casa matrimonial de Simón Bolívar, solo se sabe que perteneció al padrino del el Libertador (Juan Jerez de Aristigueta), de quien este heredó la propiedad. Luego de la muerte de la esposa, en 1803. La propiedad pasó a formar parte de los hechos que se llevaron a cabo para lograr la independencia de Venezuela. Así que fue la sede del Gobierno de Venezuela cuando se inició la separación de la Gran Colombia.
La casa-museo presenta una muestra fotográfica del proceso de restauración que se llevó a cabo, así como varios hechos históricos vinculados con esta casa.

This house is so beautiful that, seen from the outside, it looks like a model, we would never have imagined that it actually had more than 1487 square meters of construction. And that it had stables and stables, and more curious is the fact that, in the same lot is the birthplace of Simon Bolivar, which shows us a Caracas so small and without so many streets, a rural Caracas that depended more on the field than the jobs that today we call office, but that at the time was made by notaries and scribes.

Esta casa es tan linda que, vista desde afuera, parece una maqueta, nunca habríamos imaginado que en realidad tenía mas de 1487 metros cuadrados de construcción. Y que contaba con caballerizas y establos, y mas curioso es el hecho que, en el mismo solar se encuentra la casa natal de Simón Bolívar, lo que nos muestra a una Caracas tan pequeña y sin tantas calles, una Caracas rural que dependía más del campo que de los trabajos que hoy llamamos de oficina, pero que en la época era hechos por notarios y escribientes.
Un país rural que ni siquiera imaginaba florecer, pero que nos regaló momentos notables y joyas que perduran hoy en día. Que hace volar a nuestra imaginación, que quisiera revivir ese pasado frondoso de camino hacia el río.
De haber sido yo Simón Bolívar, o en su defecto, su esposa María Teresa, me habría encantado vivir en este lugar (tomando en cuenta los caballos y el patio interno), aunque también viviría ahora, en esa época era un lugar privilegiado, estaba tan cerca de la antigua Plaza Mayor o Plaza de Armas, del mercado, de la Catedral. Estaba cerca de la vida de ese tiempo. Aunque también viviría ahora, en esta casita de pesebre.
In this video you can appreciate the original distribution of this place, this video exposed to visitors, at the main entrance shows us how big the place is, and it seems to me known from movies about the life of the Liberator. It also makes me think about his birth house, which as a child I think was very small for such a wealthy family, and although they owned several properties, such as the sugar mill or the Quinta Anauco, the diary house, the family home barely has a hint of stables, which makes me really sad to notice how history was torn apart, and its vestiges.

También me pone a pensar sobre su casa natal. que desde niña pienso que era muy pequeña para tan acaudalada familia, y aunque eran dueños de varias propiedades, como el ingenio o la Quinta Anauco, la casa de diario, la casa familiar apenas tiene un amago de establos, lo que me produce verdadera tristeza al notar como fue despedazada la historia, y sus vestigios.

One of the things that I liked to see the most is a 3D moving plan where the external structure of the house is shown, its colors and how it was for the time, also that part of the floor exhibition where you can see what has been remodeled, what has been discovered and the oldest in pieces.
I was also surprised to discover the video and accept the theft of space that this place suffered, the other times I came here there was no such video, and it is necessary because this way we have an idea of the whole place and how it was lived at that time, Greetings!!!

Coincido contigo en que está casa por fuera parece una maqueta, tiene un aspecto y estilo muy lindo, a la vez se ve conservado en su exterior aunque por dentro es lamentable no decir lo mismo. Es impresionante la historia que tiene y nos comentas en tu texto, siendo alojamiento para el gran Fransisco de Miranda y lugar donde por primera vez se firmó el acta de independencia...

Me encanta que tenga un buen uso el día de hoy aunque sería magnífico una reestructuración interna y algo que promueva visitas guiadas a la casa del vínculo y el retorno. The issue of restorations of this type of heritage works, is that in Venezuela they are taken lightly, but it turns out that in other countries, especially in Europe, there are specialized restoration studios, and very few Venezuelans, especially artists or architects, do these specialties. The rest of the institutions in charge in different public administrations have tried to solve the problem of these buildings without any previous study, and end up hiring inadequate personnel, who end up damaging them.
It is true, in fact here in Venezuela there is no specialization that offers such knowledge, the closest is in Mexico, but once they go to do this specialization they do not come back here to put their knowledge into practice, it is very sad.

I too am immensely pleased that it has been restored, even if a bit of history is erased, after centuries of neglect, much has been rescued.
