Architects and environmental sustainability

Architects play a primary role in the attainment of ESG goals, we shall focus on their role in this post.

Architects are known as designers and conceptualizers of building design; they create designs and models for implementation based on engaging client preferences. @emmboy, defines architecture as “a way of life that involves continual improvement in the challenging thought process of critically and extensively formulating structure designs that are sustainable and enduring, whilst taking seriously the need for ingenuity and innovation.” This definition highlights a crucial role architects play relating to ESG, which is the need to create “sustainable and enduring designs”, this can be filled in two important roles they fill, as building designers and project managers.

Building Designers
As the foremost contact to organizations and individuals for design drafting and simulation, architects in this crucial role can advise clients on sustainable designs that take proper consideration for the environment and help their structures interact beneficially with the environment, for instance, sound interaction, waterways inhibition or pathway. This can only be achieved when architects are conversant with sustainability methods and have imbibed them within their design methods from time immemorial. In this vein, architects will need to know what sustainability entails and how they can align their methods to suit the requirements for proper ESG implementation.

Project Management
In more cases than not, several clients use the architects as project managers due to their detailed knowledge of the client’s need and the building design. In this role as project manager, the architect represents the client’s interest optimally, ensuring that the building design implementation is done in line with the client’s ESG requirements, the architect can achieve this by recommending contractors who adopt environmentally friendly methods in their construction, mechanical, electrical and plumbing techniques and when the contractors are selected by the client, the architect can monitor their processes whilst suggesting better ways to treat the environment with respect and consideration while construction is underway, for instance, debris handling, runoffs curbing, recycling and material requisition.

In reality, a number of architectural firms still have improvements to make, on the other end, a number of architectural firms have adopted ESG methods into their processes and have reaped good benefits in the form of better client base, good reputation, record of excellence etc. It is the responsibility of the governing bodies of this esteemed profession to ensure that consideration is given by its architects to ESG needs while designing structures.
To place the cards on the table, the onus rests on the architects to be conversant with ESG and how it can be adopted in their methods.
