Hirsch Palace, An Architectural Jewel of Belgrano R. [ENG/ESP]

Whoever visits Buenos Aires knows that one of the things that characterizes it is the diversity in Architecture. Countless palaces are found in the city with different styles and interesting stories.

Today I want to introduce you to another palace in the city, very particular and located in an area away from traffic and main avenues. It is the Hirsch Palace and belongs to what is known as Belgrano R. An area that is on the border between three neighborhoods, Villa Urquiza, Coghlan and Colegiales but is part of Belgrano, is considered a sub-neighborhood within the city.

This palace originally belonged to a Scottish mechanical engineer named John Angus and was inaugurated in 1895 but later the property was sold to the German Jewish businessman Alfredo Hirsch, president of the Bunge & Born company in 1910, who in addition to being president and co-owner of this company was an art lover.

The mansion was renamed from "Belmont Residence" to "Hirsch Residence", after some remodeling and extensions to the palace. It is one of the best preserved palaces in the neighborhood in front of the largest lung which is the Castelli Square.

The dimensions of this building exceed 1000 square meters and it consists of two floors, a basement, a mezzanine and the Central Hall. As I mentioned before, the owner Alfredo Hirsch was fond of art, that is why in his mansion there were valuable paintings and works of art as decoration. Years later some of these works had been donated to the National Museum of Fine Arts in the city of Buenos Aires.

Over the years the building was remodeled, restructured and the descendants of this family continued with their legacy by opening its doors only to introduce more works to the mansion. It is not enabled for visitors and although it is not used as a family home it is still preserved under this concept, however it is said that at some fleeting moment it opened its doors to function as a museum. The palace is historical patrimony with structural protection.

This is the first palace I have known that was not acquired by the state for political uses, offices or to create a ministry. The building belongs to the Hirsch family and their descendants. In fact Hirsch's daughter created the Amigos de la Música foundation and they continue with the artistic legacy.

It is very important to preserve this type of buildings and palaces in the cities and even more important to work to preserve its structure with the main aesthetics and origin. I particularly think that they beautify the city and that in this way one can admire these relevant architectural works that marked the history of the countries. I look forward to be attentive if someday they decide to open its doors to be able to know the interior of this emblematic building in the neighborhood of Belgrano and thus be able to admire the works of art that are there in addition to all its interior design.

What do you think of the Hirsch Palace? Leave me a comment and tell me if in your country or place you know this kind of palaces or structures of great value and conservation 😉

Something about just preserving and not opening it to anyone just makes it maintain its uniqueness.
It’s a very gorgeous historic building, I’d love to have a closeup view physically.

By the way, you’ve shown us almost every inch of the building. The shots are incredible!
