I hope you have a wonderful week, enjoying the goodness of life. Today I will take you on a walk to one of the iconic parks of the city of Merida, Venezuela called "El parque de la isla", if you like to connect with nature, enjoy the joy of children and admire interesting architectural structures, you will love this place.
I keep very special memories of this beautiful place, but I had some time without visiting it, until a few days ago we decided to take our son to the park and spend a different day with the family, then we chose the island park, because it is the ideal place to get out of the routine, enjoy a natural environment and recreate. It's open every day and it's free, what more could we ask for, don't you think?
It is located north of the city of Merida, Venezuela and can be accessed through the extension of Los Proceres Avenue or through University Avenue.
Although time has worn down part of its structures, it is still quite well preserved, I think they have been rehabilitating it, although there is still much work to be done. This day, I noticed that it was clean, the green areas were cared for and this made me very happy, because the last thing I had heard was that it was in a state of abandonment.
¿No crees?
Island Park - Parque La Isla
A park that fights against climate change.
When you arrive at the park, you feel the contact with nature, immediately, its tall and leafy trees, receive you with its freshness, without a doubt this is one of the things I like the most about the place. In addition, I find it very interesting and important the work they maintain active to mitigate climate change.
At the entrance and its surroundings we found a lot of information about this, like this billboard that I show you in the picture, which allowed us to learn about the Andes project, an environmental organization that seeks to improve the capacity of carbon dioxide sequestration in the trees of the park. Interesting, isn't it? Among its actions is the creation of agro-ecological nurseries, so we see around the park some seedlings of ornamental plants. More information can be found on their website. (porlasostenibilidad.org).
As in most of the city parks, here we can admire again the mysterious stick beards and bromeliads hanging on the branches of the trees, I was a bit curious about the species of trees found in this extensive park and I found in an article of the Universidad de los Andes that you can consult here that the Bucare and the Pino Laso are predominant.

Access and Parking - Acceso y Estacionamientos
Another important feature of this fabulous park is that it has ample parking throughout its extension, people with vehicles can comfortably place their car in any of them and even have a picnic very close to it.
At the beginning, I told you that there are two ways to enter the park, if you enter by car, you must enter only by Los Proceres Avenue, through the entrance of the Mucumbarila Convention Center or Corpoandes. The other entrance is through a pedestrian bridge and I do not recommend leaving the vehicle so far away.

The House - La Casona
A nice reminder of colonial architecture.
Un lindo recuerdo de la arquitectura colonial.
For us it was easier to access through Los Proceres Avenue, since the public transportation left us very close, we walked and the first thing we found was this Casona, which serves as an information center. To be honest, I did not remember it, I had completely forgotten it, how could I forget this treasure of colonial architecture?
This large house is called: "Information Center: Route of the Admirable Campaign". It is quite large and as you can see it is influenced by the Spanish colonial style. Elongated corridors with beautiful decorative columns, wooden doors and roof covered in Creole clay tile.
It is very well preserved, but unfortunately it was closed and I could not discover how is its interior, I understand that in it we can find antique utensils and a kind of museum of things related to coffee production. Maybe, in another opportunity, I will be lucky enough to find it open.

A structure with a futuristic vision. - Una estructura con visión futurista.
Upon entering the park we find this structure with a rather peculiar geometry, which steals the glances towards it. Every time I see it, I remember those cartoons with futuristic visions like the supersonics. An ancient construction with a very interesting modern vision.
Here I have very nice memories of my childhood, since at that time there was a restaurant managed by one of my uncles, they offered really delicious fruit drinks and it was quite crowded.
Over the years, the restaurant closed and this structure became the headquarters of some government institutions, the last one I remember was related to the Ministry of Housing. I don't know what is currently operating in this area of the park, but I saw it closed and without any informative notice.

As you can see, it looks like two spinning tops that are joined together through a column, it is normal to wonder: how is this structure supported, but if we look more carefully, it is located at the end of a concrete bridge, which functions as a walkway to this circular room. This cantilever bridge sure does much of the support work, but this, is not enough to stop me from wondering, what seismic criteria did they use in this design. Hopefully, sometime, I will be able to talk to an expert who can clarify all these doubts for me.
In the lower part there was a submerged exhibit, like a kind of aquarium, I do not remember very well, because it was very small, but unfortunately this area was also closed and I do not know with property that currently works. To access it, you enter through this small structure, with a very nice curved roof and a spiral staircase.

We continue walking through the park, and at the back we find another marvel of architecture, these bleachers that allow us to observe the different events that usually take place in a small theatrical stage located in front of it.
This concrete roof, with an overhang of approximately three meters, defies gravity, while allowing us to admire a very beautiful geometric shape, for its lines and depths that resemble several triangles and from it hang several lamps. The platform is smaller and is also built in concrete.

I really like to go to this place because from its highest part, we can have the best view of the park. Also, as a construction fanatic, it allows me to closely observe some details. I could notice that in each triangular termination the load bearing beams are located, some areas show humidity and wear of the concrete. I imagine that for this type of construction with such a long overhang, they must have used a large amount of steel beams.
I find this acoustic shell very beautiful and being in it elevates the experience in the park, even if there are no performances at the time. I am glad it is preserved and I hope it gets the maintenance it needs to continue to be enjoyed.

Artificial Lagoon - Laguna Artificial
Undoubtedly, the artificial lagoons, is a great attraction and is what gives the park its name. They offer boat rides all around, some boats are pedal boats and others with oars. Some are designed for two adults and one child and others for 3 adults or two adults and two children. The cost of the ride is $2 for 10 minutes and although we didn't take a ride this time, we enjoyed the beautiful view.
The lagoon is quite shallow, I think it is fed by one of the nearby rivers and inside the lagoon we found some trees and planters, which make the walk more pleasant.

Walks- Caminerias
The park has many walkways, stairs over the lagoon and many areas for walking and recreation, one of the newer areas has a roof deck supported by a steel structure and several planters in the center. In this area, it is common to see different entrepreneurs offering food and beverages, the most popular in my region are strawberries with cream, shakes called "vitamins", wafers, cakes and ice cream. I liked that they had means of payment through points of sale, because this gives more accessibility to visitors to taste any of their products.

Of course the most important visitors of the park are our beloved children, it is good to have well designed, ergonomic and functional playgrounds for the kids to have a lot of fun.
In Merida, most of the parks are designed for small children, I love that the island park is the exception, because here we find slides of about 3 meters high, big swings and others, designed for the use of older children.
It is very nice, located on a sand, where my son quite enjoyed playing with it, because he is still too small 'for most of the attractions and is a little afraid of it, however, he had a lot of fun, in which he felt more comfortable.
They are freshly painted and very well maintained, it is a fairly safe place for children and is enclosed with perimeter walls built in stone, which keeps children away from the artificial lagoon, that seems to me very well thought out, by the designer of the park.

After a few wonderful hours in this beautiful park, we continue our way, but we return by the pedestrian bridge that connects us with the University Avenue of the city, this bridge is also quite interesting, built in concrete, and covered in brick. It is long but quite narrow.

Yes, he wanted to take the ride on the boat and he played a lot, but on the sand most of all. I like the roof of the shell a lot, but the structure is very nice too, I think that for an old one, they have some modern designs.
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍

Doris!!! This is such a beautiful place. Plus it's gigantic!!! My kids would go crazy there haha.
The house is beautiful. With a little paint it would be perfect. I love colonial architecture, it has a lot of beauty. But the house of the supersonic lis caught my attention haha I think I would be scared to go inside.
Another of my favorite things were the lagoons and the possibility of being able to walk around them. Too cute.
Without a doubt an excellent option to share with the family. A birthday party there would be fabulous!
Thank you very much friend, that's right, it's a little scary that structure. I am a fan of colonial architecture, I love to admire it, the house is very nice.
Yes, I imagine that your children would really enjoy this park, because some of the slides are tall and actually there are few like that here, most of them are for small children, which is fine for me, for now but in a few years, for Angel it won't be attractive.

Woouuuw wonderful architecture, Children will be very happy to be invited to Island Park, there are many beautiful places with extraordinary architecture @doriangel
That's right, it's a nice place for children to have fun, with good architecture to admire.
Greetings @doriangel. There's nothing as truly satisfying as a green environment that provides a variety of interesting activities for the human experience! Whether they're for socials, relaxation, exercise, entertainment, or sports, the incredible Island Park is the ultimate epitome of how urban parks should be ideally designed. 👍
Obviously, my favorite architecture there would be the saucer-shaped building. Because of its peculiar characteristics, our eyes are immediately drawn to it! Add to that the abundance of flourishing nature, then you have created heaven on earth! 😊
Were there brand new amenities, features, or structures being constructed during your visit?
Hello @storiesoferne , thank you very much, yes, it seems to me a well thought design and nature was a great ally. That saucer is very interesting, isn't it?
Well, I know the park since I was a child, but I don't go so often, because it is a little far from my residence, but what I noticed new, are these covered walkways. Maybe they are not very new, but they are the newest thing in the park. I forgot to mention that it also has tennis and volleyball courts. These are operational again. Otherwise, everything is as I remember it. My father tells me that it must have been inaugurated around the 60's approximately.
Thank you very much for accompanying me on the tour of the island park.
Oh wonderful! Yes, those covered walkways appear recently installed. And with the additional provisions of tennis and volleyball courts, the park's attractiveness would surely increase. Thank you for your marvelous content! Have an enjoyable one with more blessings! 👍😊
¡Hermoso lugar! Saludos :)
Thank you very much @sofathana . I am also curious about this, but I did not find information, maybe in the casona I would have found some history, but it was closed and on the web, some articles refer mostly to the acoustic shell but still do not mention the designer.
Greetings :)
Saludos :)

More successes and blessings to you too dear @doriangel. Kudos to your exceptional publications and thank you for your constant support. Much appreciated! 😀
It is a very beautiful park. The construction over the lake caught my attention. It is certainly futuristic and what you say that looks like a spinning top is true hahaha I loved your metaphor. Too bad you couldn't go to the basement, an aquarium there would be wonderful.
Yes, a submerged aquarium would be very good. It is quite an interesting and strange structure. Thank you very much for stopping by.
Hello @doriangel, is a very beautiful park and with incredible constructions, the view of the mountain is spectacular, I hope soon to visit this park, all the places are beautiful I can not choose my favorite, my son would love this park loves to play outdoors and this park has everything to make the fun of the little ones is complete, thanks for sharing your view to this incredible park that besides providing various spaces for fun allows us to be in contact with the environment and relax from the stress of the city, the ideal place to recharge energy and breathe fresh air.
