After watching the sunset at the monument "The Bolivar Column", we decided to continue our walk through the center of the city of Merida, before taking the bus and returning home, there was little time left to take advantage of the daylight, but I really wanted to see the works of art, of which there was so much talk in the regional news.

It turns out that a few weeks ago in the city there was an event that brought together different artists of the country, called "Mural City", this as part of the facade restoration project that is taking place in the historic center of the city of Merida, Venezuela.

Merida, despite being a tourist city, also failed to escape the consequences of the economic crisis of recent years. Undoubtedly it needed this, since most of its buildings were extremely deteriorated, the siding was coming off the walls, they had not received a coat of paint for a long time, doors and windows were deteriorated and many houses were abandoned.

While walking through these streets, I pleasantly discovered that several of them have been intervened and restored, which has given back the color and life that were gradually losing, to give you an idea I share this photo I took just a year ago, in these same streets.

Después de ver el atardecer en el monumento "La columna de Bolívar", decidimos continuar nuestra caminata por el centro de la ciudad de Mérida, antes de tomar el autobús y volver a casa, quedaba poco tiempo para aprovechar la luz de día, pero tenía muchas ganas de ver las obras de arte, de las que tanto hablaban en las noticias regionales.

Resulta que hace algunas semanas en la ciudad se desarrolló un evento que reunió a distintos artistas del país, llamado "Ciudad Mural", esto como parte del proyecto de restauración de fachadas que se está dando en el centro histórico de la ciudad de Mérida, Venezuela.

Mérida, a pesar de ser una ciudad turística, tampoco logró escapar de las consecuencias de la crisis económica de los últimos años. Sin duda necesitaba de esto, ya que la mayoría de sus edificaciones, se encontraban sumamente deterioradas, el revestimiento se desprendía de las paredes, hace mucho no recibían una capa de pintura, puertas, ventanas deterioradas y además muchas viviendas están abandonadas.

Mientras caminaba por estas calles, descubrí gratamente que varias de ellas han sido intervenidas y restauradas, lo que le ha devuelto el color y la vida que estaban perdiendo progresivamente, para que tengan una idea comparto esta foto que tome hace justamente un año, en estas mismas calles.

It fills me with joy to see how, little by little, each of these homes and businesses are receiving the maintenance that corresponds to them and it is interesting how art turned out to be a great ally. I have always thought that art and architecture are the perfect duo. Since ancient times it has been so, and the technique of muralism has been present in great works of architecture, and architecture itself is art.

An example of this is the beautiful facade of this restaurant located in the Milla parish, and although this building is not part of the restored houses, it is a great example of how art can enhance the beauty of a place.

Me llena de alegría ver cómo, poco a poco, cada una de estas viviendas y comercios, están recibiendo el mantenimiento que corresponde y es interesante cómo el arte resultó ser un gran aliado. Siempre he pensado que el arte y la arquitectura son la dupla perfecta. Desde la antigüedad ha sido así, y la técnica del muralismo ha estado presente en grandes obras de arquitectura, y es que la arquitectura en sí misma es arte.

Una muestra de esto, es la bella fachada de este restaurante ubicado en la parroquia Milla, y aunque esta edificación no forma parte de las viviendas restauradas, es un gran ejemplo de cómo el arte pueda realzar la belleza de un lugar.
