Hello dear friends of architecture and design. I am happy to have a new opportunity to share with you a little more of the architecture of my city. Today I would like to take you to know the “Parque Jardín el Acuario”, which is located on Andres Bello Avenue, in the Las Tapias sector, in my beautiful city of Merida, Venezuela.
This beautiful park is an excellent place to spend a pleasant time, learning and getting to know different species of the aquatic world. Undoubtedly a place where you can learn while having fun. Ideal for all members of the household, especially for the little ones, who like my son, are eager to learn about the wonders of the natural world.
It was built in 1971, by the regional government, so says a plaque that is located at the entrance of the park.
Hola queridos amigos de arquitectura y diseño. Estoy feliz de tener una nueva oportunidad de compartir con ustedes un poco más de la arquitectura de mi ciudad. Hoy quisiera llevarlos a conocer el "Parque Jardín el Acuario", el cual está ubicado en la Av. Andrés Bello, en el sector las Tapias, de mi bella ciudad de Mérida, Venezuela.
Este hermoso parque es un excelente lugar para pasar un rato agradable, aprendiendo y conociendo diversas especies del mundo acuático. Sin duda un lugar donde puedes aprender mientras te diviertes. Ideal para todos los miembros de la casa, en especial para los más pequeños, que como mi hijo, están ansiosos por conocer las maravillas del mundo natural.
Fue construida en 1971, por el gobierno regional, así lo expresa una placa que se encuentra ubicada en la entrada del parque.

A couple of days ago I was in the vicinity of this park and I was pleasantly surprised to see its exterior completely renovated, so I could not miss this opportunity and together with my friend and my little son, we approached, in an attempt to enjoy its facilities.
They served us very kindly and informed us that due to the restoration work being done, it was not fully operational, however, they let us pass and enjoy a little. We gave a small contribution of 1 $ for the feeding of the fish.
This park is made up of several modules, which are joined together by elongated walkways of varying slopes. Surrounded by a beautiful garden. One of the things that has always caught my attention, with respect to its design, is the pyramidal shape of its roofs. The roof, undoubtedly, enhances each module, thanks to its high slope and height, which resembles a truncated pyramid, culminating in a skylight, which allows the light to pass through.
Hace un par de días me encontraba por los alrededores de este parque y gratamente me sorprendí al ver su exterior totalmente renovado, así que no podía pasar esta oportunidad y junto a mi amiga y mi pequeño hijo, nos acercamos, en un intento de disfrutar de sus instalaciones.
Nos atendieron muy amablemente y nos informaron que debido a los trabajos de restauración que se están realizando, no estaba funcionando completamente, sin embargo, nos dejaron pasar y disfrutar un poco. Dimos una pequeña colaboración de 1 $ destinada a la alimentación de los peces.
Este parque está constituido por varios módulos, que se unen entre sí por alargados pasillos de diversas pendientes. Rodeados de un hermoso jardín. Una de las cosas que siempre me ha llamado la atención, con respecto a su diseño, es la forma piramidal de sus techos. El techo, sin duda, realza cada módulo, gracias a su elevada pendiente y altura, que asemeja una pirámide truncada, que culmina en una claraboya, que permite el paso de la luz.

In the first environment, construction material was found on site. Part of the shoring, wood, tongue and groove and other things. We continued advancing and arrived at the second room, previously, here was an exhibition of fossils and fish called koi. But due to the works, I imagine that they are sheltered in another place. But fortunately we found the central pool of the beautiful red-eared slider turtles, a species that is in danger of extinction. They are on a concrete pedestal lined with bricks.
En el primer ambiente, se encontraba material de construcción en el sitio. Parte del apuntalamiento, madera, machihembrado y otras cosas más. Seguimos avanzando y llegamos a la segunda sala, anteriormente, aquí se encontraba una exhibición de fósiles y peces llamados koi. Pero debido a los trabajos, me imagino que están resguardados en otro lugar. Pero afortunadamente encontramos la piscina central de las bellas tortugas orejas rojas, una especie que se encuentra en peligro de extinción. Estas se encuentran sobre un pedestal de concreto revestido con ladrillos.

This module is well illuminated, thanks to beautiful panoramic windows all around. The floor is terracotta-colored ceramic. And the walls are being lined with clay slats. It is noticeable that they are working on the reconstruction of the fish tanks.
Este módulo se encuentra bien iluminado, gracias a hermosas ventanas panorámicas en todo su alrededor. El piso es de cerámica color terracota. Y las paredes están siendo revestidos por tablillas de arcilla. Se nota que están trabajando en la reconstrucción de las peceras.

As I mentioned, each room is separated by corridors with roof coverings and metal structure. I really like the fact that part of the corridor has stairs and at one end there is a ramp for people with special mobility conditions.
Como mencione, cada sala está separada por pasillos con cubiertas de techo y estructura metálica. Me gusta mucho, que una parte del pasillo es con escaleras y en un extremo posee una rampa, para las personas en condiciones de movilidad especiales.

In these surroundings, there are small ponds of water, where we find beautiful fish of different species and sizes. There is also a refuge of morrocoyos in a limited space with stone walls.
En estos alrededores, se encuentran pequeños estanques de agua, donde encontramos bellos peces de distintas especies y tamaños. También se encuentra un refugio de morrocoyos en un espacio limitado con muros de piedras.

After a while, outside, we went to the last room, the largest, and the only one that is currently operational, although there are still some details to be completed.
The walls of this area are covered in ceramic and the fish tanks occupy half of the wall. Something I would like them to redesign is the size of some fish tanks, because some fish have a considerable size and I would like them to have more freedom to move around.
Después de un rato, en el exterior, pasamos a la última sala, la más grande, y la única que se encuentra operativa actualmente, aunque aún faltan algunos detalles por culminar.
Las paredes de esta zona, se encuentran revestidas en cerámica y las peceras ocupan la mitad de la pared. Algo que me gustaría que rediseñaran es el tamaño de algunas peceras, porque algunos peces tienen un tamaño considerable y me encantaría que tuviesen mayor libertad para desplazarse.

In the middle of the room there are large fish tanks on tables covered with bricks. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, people can circulate comfortably. They can admire each of the fish tanks without any problem.
En medio de la sala se encuentran peceras grandes, sobre mesones recubiertos de ladrillos. Las salas, son amplias y cómodas, las personas pueden circular con comodidad. Así admirar, cada una de las peceras, sin problema.

This park has a lot of potential, I am anxious to see the final result, which can once again be a great tourist attraction as it was at one time. There are different species here, some of regional origin, including koi fish, trout and others. I imagine, they will soon be correctly identified.
Este parque tiene mucho potencial, estoy ansiosa de ver el resultado final, que puede volver a ser un gran atractivo turístico como lo fue en un tiempo. Aquí se encuentran distintas especies, algunos de origen regional, entre ellos destacan los peces koi, las truchas y otros más. Imagino, que pronto estarán identificados correctamente.

A little over a year ago, I was passing through the garden and took some pictures where we can see the terrible state of the park. The roof is made of green asphalt shingles and although this material is usually quite resistant and low maintenance, there comes a time when it ceases to be aesthetic, some parts begin to peel off, moisture stains are seen, and no longer fulfills its function so it is better to replace.
The same thing was happening on the walls, the humidity was doing its thing and the coating was falling off. The wood was also damaged and all this was going to bring serious consequences to the whole structure in the long run.
Hace un poco más de un año, estuve de paso por el jardín y tomé algunas fotografías donde podemos ver el terrible estado en la que se encontraba el parque. El techo está constituido por teja asfáltica de color verde y aunque este material suele ser bastante resistente y de bajo mantenimiento, llega un momento, en que deja de ser estética, algunas partes comienzan a desprenderse, se ven manchas de humedad, y deja de cumplir su función por lo que es mejor sustituir.
Lo mismo, pasaba en las paredes, la humedad estaba haciendo de las suyas y el revestimiento se estaba cayendo. La madera también se notaba dañada y todo esto a la larga iba a traer graves consecuencias a toda su estructura.

Fortunately, this year, they have replaced part of the wood, replaced all the asphalt shingles, and painted all the modules. The difference is remarkable and has undoubtedly brought this beautiful structure back to life, thanks to this particular design.
Afortunadamente, este año, han sustituido parte de la madera, sustituyeron toda la teja asfáltica, y han pintado todos los módulos. La diferencia, es notable y sin duda, le ha devuelto la vida a esta estructura tan hermosa, gracias a este diseño tan particular.

The green highlights the beauty of the whole structure that combines with all the lines and geometric shapes with which the designer played. I really like this type of roofs, they are visually harmonious and of course the flowers and trees are the icing on the cake.
El verde resalta la belleza de toda la estructura que se conjuga con todas las líneas y formas geométricas con las que jugó el diseñador. Este tipo de techos, me gustan mucho, son armónicas visualmente y por supuesto las flores, los árboles son la cereza del pastel.

I really enjoyed this visit, which was also a great learning experience, since I love the construction of civil works and everything related to it and of course I loved to meet these beautiful species, which serve an educational and research function and some as those in danger of extinction are being safeguarded by people who surely love life.
I hope to show you in some time the final result, and I invite you to include this park as part of your tourist itinerary if you visit the city of Merida.

Disfrute mucho esta visita, que además fue una gran experiencia de aprendizaje, ya que me encanta la construcción de obras civiles y todo lo relacionado con ella y por supuesto ame conocer estas bellas especies, que cumplen una función educativa y de investigación y algunos como los que están en peligro de extinción están siendo resguardados por personas que seguramente aman la vida.
Espero mostrarle dentro de algún tiempo el resultado final, y los invito a incluir este parque como parte de su itinerario turístico si visitan la ciudad de Mérida.
