Hello dear friends, lovers of architecture and design. I am happy to greet you once again, wishing you the best at the beginning of the year. Today I want to share with you some pictures of the Plaza Bolivar in Merida or Plaza Mayor as it was known in ancient times.
The Plaza Bolivar is the epicenter of the historic center of the city, the meeting point for visitors and locals, who every day walk through the square to go to work or do their daily errands. Plaza Bolivar is a splendid place from where you can admire the beautiful architecture of Merida, mostly inspired by Spain.
Every time I visit downtown Mérida, I like to spend some time in this beautiful plaza, a plaza with great history, created in honor of Venezuela's liberator, Simón Bolívar. This plaza was initially founded in 1559 and was known as Plaza Mayor. That's a long time, right! I had no idea that its foundation took place almost 05 centuries ago, but in this blog, I found a lot of interesting information and some great pictures of that time.
This square is, then, a sample of how everything is changing with time, for better or for worse. We are in a world that is gradually transforming and changing, and architecture is no exception. The original design was for an open and free plaza, which would serve as a place of arrival for people from the different towns of Mérida. Three centuries later, Mérida's plaza was converted into a garden-type plaza, with the objective of beautifying the city.
I was unaware of all these changes, but since I met this square, it became one of my favorite places, for its beauty, the beautiful vegetation that surrounds each of its 08 avenues and the cultural contrast that you find in them.
Plaza Bolivar is the perfect place to rest, to read under the shade of a tree, to have a good conversation and meet with friends. Here you will find people playing chess, playing an instrument, taking pictures, feeding the pigeons, or just resting and admiring the view.
My favorite part is the central part where we find the equestrian sculpture of the liberator. Without a doubt, this is one of the most beautiful sculptures you will find in Mérida of the liberator. It is a great work, full of details, on a tall and beautiful marble pedestal. Surrounded by beautiful and tall chaguaramos, which are very ornamental trees.
Christmas, as always, transforms spaces, and this year, it certainly looked beautiful at night, but by day, my son and I also got to enjoy the various decorations, which included beautiful arches of lights on every walkway. Giant gifts and backdrops, swords of lights and stars hanging from the trees and a beautiful yellow and black train that the kids enjoyed a lot.
Christmas decorations always bring life to any place. One of the things I loved the most was how they transformed the corner water fountains into a Christmas tree, which looked beautiful and tall. It was a great design, I liked that it was white, so it sparkled in the sun's rays.
And what about the nutcrackers, I love them, I want to have some at home and here we found a whole army on the border between the square and the government palace.
It was a beautiful walk with my son, which made me fall more in love with the architectural character of this city, where we also discovered new advances in the restoration of the basilica, I had already told you that they had dismantled the cross to restore it, in the following image I present the new one, it is a very beautiful iron cross.
I also discovered or rather I remembered an interesting fact about the araguaney tree that dresses the square in yellow at least once a year, and it is that this araguaney was planted and blessed by His Holiness Pope John Paul II, during his visit in 1985, as stated on the plaque that we found on the floor of the area in front of the Cathedral.
Each visit, each trip, each tour, leaves us with new experiences to tell and to continue inviting you to visit Mérida.
Until next time, a million blessings to your families.

Muchas gracias.
Friend, I don't know Plaza Bolivar in Caracas, when I went there I don't remember passing by that area. This year I would love to travel. Thank you very much.
Wow, what a beautiful place, and what a history, I didn't know it was so old, 5 centuries. Coincidentally my brothers are coming to Merida at this very moment. Excellent post, I really like to see new places, I haven't been to Merida for many years, so I'm not sure if I've been there, maybe I have. Greetings and blessings...
How nice that your brothers came to Mérida. I'm sure you know it, because it's in the center of town, I didn't know it was so old, but of course it has gone through many changes. Thanks for visiting my post

Thank you for your visit. This square is one of the most beautiful and the architecture that surrounds it gives it a great value.
Classic buildings like this have high artistic value and are never easily forgotten @doriangel
Yes, you are right, they are great architectural works. Thank you
Hello friend, what beautiful decorations in the square, it is located in an excellent environment that allows the visitor to appreciate the various buildings such as the basilica and its advanced restoration. I think that in many cities the nutcracker theme was the protagonist of the Christmas decorations.
Greetings!
Yes, I like the nutcrackers a lot, I noticed that this year they were more popular. The plaza is in an excellent location. I hope you visit us soon.
