If there's one thing we love about architecture, it's certainly the most striking and innovative finishes today.
Something that stands out from the buildings around it.
It is usually one of the main purposes of the primary design of the project, since the first proposals offered to clients or developers are essential when it comes to securing the idea.
This is exactly what the architects who built the Church of Santa María la Mayor in Ronda would have thought.
Making it one of the most original works of Gothic architecture, which is exactly why it is one of the most popular buildings in Andalusia and one of the most valued in Ronda, being of cultural interest.
Its history like that of many architectural works several centuries old, has interesting works of antiquity and mixed concepts due to different renovations and retouches with different concepts.
Mixes that bring roots and a certain gift to the work itself.
Like many churches in Andalusia, it was built on the site of the old mosque that was demolished at the beginning of the Castilian and Catholic reconquest, which is why it was built in 1486.
Its stone architecture and tower denote it as a work of the 15th century without doubt, but isn't the main façade of arches and galleries something very striking and different for a work of these centuries?

Indeed, it is its most peculiar attraction, which makes it completely different from the 15th century Gothic churches built in the rest of Andalusia at the hands of the reconquest and the rest of Spain in general.
A completely different concept of façade.
To say that once you see it in front of you, it is magnificent and of extraordinary dimensions.
With the exception of the mudejar style tower, it is very simple and you can't imagine that the church inside is of magnificent dimensions and heights.
I leave you a link to visit it virtually and see its interior;)

Continuing, we can say that it was first a mosque, then the main church and then a collegiate church.
Inside there are innumerable works of incalculable cultural value due to its antiquity, among others.
It is located in the Plaza de la Duquesa de Plarcent. A very large square with a central park that makes the views of the church and adjacent buildings more beautiful, such as the Town Hall, which is another of the great Town Halls, both for its architectural value and the beauty of the stone arches that make it up and its antiquity.
As you can see in this and my previous post, Ronda is rich in culture and valuable buildings.
Continuing with the history of the church, it suffered a collapse due to an earthquake in the 16th century and its second nave or renaissance nave was built on the site of the damaged works.
It is worth seeing the state of the beams and joists of its façade considering its age.
To see this majestic building in front of another of the great ones in the same place with a preserved style that continues to have the charm of past centuries. It is something that cannot be easily described in words.
It has been one of my favourite places in Ronda.
I also have to admit that I fully understand why renowned personalities such as Orson Welles , Ernest Hemingway and many other lovers of the city, saw in Ronda a cultural paradise, preserved and protected in time.
Such beautiful quotes as that of Orson Welles who wanted to be a Rondeño.
A man is not from where he is born but from where he wants to die.
Being Ronda his home in his last years of life and having a special affection of the people of Ronda to the person and the character.
