Basilica of St. Teresa
I wish a happy start of the week to all of you who read me, especially to the members of the Architecture + Design community of Hive! On this occasion I want to share again my appreciation of one of the Catholic temples of Caracas. This beautiful church is called Basilica de Santa Teresa and is one of the most popular in Venezuela, since it is home to the image of the Nazarene of St. Paul that attracts thousands of parishioners on Holy Wednesday, in a procession that lasts about four hours through the historic center of the capital. Everything about this temple is impressive, although I must confess that I find it one of the strangest I have ever seen, and now I will tell you why.
Main Entrance
¡Les deseo un feliz inicio de semana para todos los que me leen, especialmente a los miembros de la comunidad Architecture + Desing de Hive!. En esta ocasión quiero compartir nuevamente mi apreciación de uno de los templos católicos de Caracas. Esta hermosa iglesia se llama Basílica de Santa Teresa y es una de las más populares en Venezuela, ya que en ella esta la imagen del Nazareno de San Pablo que atrae a miles de feligreses el Miércoles Santo, en una procesión que dura aproximadamente cuatro horas por el casco histórico de la capital. Todo lo referente a este templo es impresionante, aunque debo confesar que me parece uno de los más extraños que he conocido, y ahora les digo por qué.
Main Corridor
As you can see in the first picture, it is a very elongated catholic church, and it has several domes. The two domes of the central towers are very traditional, but that dome in the center is strange to me, although just below it is the altar where mass is celebrated. The strangest thing about this basilica is that after the altar you can continue walking, it is not the end for those who visit the temple. If you enter through this facade that overlooks the Plaza Diego Ibarra in Caracas, you will find the three central aisles where there are benches for the parishioners, white walls and many black lamps with white bulbs. In every corner religious images, highlighting a small grotto inside the church of the Virgin of Lourdes.
The Altar
Como pueden apreciar en la primera fotografía, es una iglesia católica muy alargada, y tiene varias cúpulas. Las dos cúpulas de las torres centrales son muy tradicionales, pero esa cúpula en el centro se me hace extraña, aunque justo bajo ella está el altar donde se celebra la misa. Lo más extraño de esta basílica es que luego del altar se puede seguir caminando, no es el final para quienes visitan el templo. Si entras por esta fachada que da con la Plaza Diego Ibarra de Caracas, encontremos los tres pasillos centrales donde están los bancos para los feligreses, paredes blancas y muchas lámparas negras de bombillos blancos. En cada rincón imágenes religiosas, destacando una pequeña gruta dentro de la iglesia de la Virgen de Lourdes.
For the magnitude of this temple that receives so many parishioners during the year, the altar is very simple. As I said before, it is under the dome and under a structure supported by four pillars. It is a small altar with some seats for the priest and his assistants, but it does not have a back, behind the priest you can see is the other part of the church, the back part of the altar, place to which you have access from the sides, and even during the mass people walk in front and behind the altar, it really seems very strange to me, although I must accept that everyone keeps silent.
Cupola
Para la magnitud de este templo que recibe a tantos feligreses durante el año, el altar es muy sencillo. Como les dije antes, queda debajo de la cúpula y bajo una estructura sostenida por cuatro pilares. Es un altar pequeño con algunos asientos para el sacerdote y sus ayudantes, pero no tiene un fondo, detrás del sacerdote se puede ver es la otra parte de la iglesia, la parte trasera al altar, lugar al cual se tiene acceso por los costados, e incluso durante la misa la gente camina por delante y por detrás del altar, realmente me parece muy extraño, aunque debo aceptar que todos se mantienen en silencio.

Towards the left side of the entrance, at the end of the aisle is the image of the Nazarene of San Pablo, and in the right aisle is the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. Precisely these are the two places through which we must pass to go to the back of the temple, and then I will show you how the church looks from the altar to the final entrance, where the most remarkable thing is the organ.
Hacia el lado izquierdo de la entrada, al final del pasillo se encuentra la imagen del Nazareno de San Pablo, y en el pasillo derecho está el Santísimo Sacramento del Altar. Precisamente estos son los dos lugares por los que debemos pasar para ir hacia la parte trasera del templo, y a continuación les mostraré cómo se ve la iglesia desde el altar hasta la entrada final, donde lo más destacable es el órgano.
Organ
I won't deny it, for me it is a very strange Catholic church, but at the same time it is beautiful. Almost nowhere is the altar drifting in the middle of the church as it is here. The biggest surprise is to arrive at the end of the aisle, behind the altar and find another great entrance, a rear entrance that leads to the surroundings of the Plaza Caracas, and although it is not the main entrance, it does not lose the majesty of the rest of the architecture. Undoubtedly this is a very interesting place in Caracas, and I am running short in this post with all that can be learned from the temple, especially its history and architecture. Back entrance
No lo negaré, para mí es una iglesia católica muy extraña, pero a la vez es hermosa. En casi ninguna parte el altar está a la deriva en medio del templo como aquí. La sorpresa más grande es llegar al final del pasillo, detrás del altar y encontrarnos con otra gran entrada, una entrada trasera que da con los al rededores de la Plaza Caracas, y que aunque se nota que no es la entrada principal, no pierde la majestuosidad del resto de la arquitectura. Sin duda alguna este es un lugar en Caracas muy interesante, y me quedo corto en este post con todo lo que se puede aprender del templo, especialmente de su historia y arquitectura. Mientras tanto me despido esperando que les haya gustado estas primeras impresiones y fotografías, un abrazo para todos...

This church looks very beautiful and unique! The long shape and the different domes make it stand out. The part where people can walk behind the altar is interesting because most churches don’t have that. Thank you for sharing these pictures and details! Absolutely interior architectural features more impressive than exterior designs. But main entrance has fascinating looks indeed.
Greetings friend ,the facade of the church is beautiful, I like the columns and the domes, the interior design is beautiful, the dome and its nice murals are my favorite part.
