A few days ago I visited with my son a civil engineering work of great importance for Cubans. The 100 y Boyeros Bridge, as we call the bridge located at one of the busiest intersections in Havana, specifically at the confluence of 100th Street and Rancho Boyeros Avenue, which belongs to the Boyeros municipality and serves as a link between the Playa municipality and Arroyo Naranjo, passing through other neighboring municipalities. It is composed of a network of several sub bridges that lead to different nearby places, but thanks to its creation a major road problem in this area of Havana was solved.
It is a structure that combines functionality and contemporary design. Built in the 90's, at that time I lived very close to the area, this bridge was designed to facilitate road and pedestrian mobility, integrating harmoniously into the urban environment.
Hace unos días visité con mi hijo una obra de ingeniería civil de gran importancia para los cubanos El puente de 100 y Boyeros, así denominamos al puente situado en una de las intersecciones más transitadas de La Habana, concretamente en la confluencia de la Calle 100 y la Avenida Rancho Boyeros, perteneciente al municipio Boyeros y que sirve de unión del municipio Playa y Arroyo Naranjo, pasando por otros municipios vecinos. Se compone de una red de varios subpuentes que conducen a diferentes lugares cercanos, pero gracias a su creación se solucionó un importante problema vial en esta zona de La Habana.
Es una estructura que combina funcionalidad y diseño contemporáneo. Construido en los años 90, en aquella epoca, yo vivia muy cerca de la zona, este puente fue diseñado para facilitar la movilidad vial y peatonal, integrándose armónicamente en el entorno urbano.

The structure of the bridge is robust, composed of a series of reinforced concrete columns designed to withstand the traffic of all types of transport, as well as pedestrian traffic. It is bordered by handrails that offer it attractiveness and safety.
In addition, the bridge has become a visual reference and landmark in the city; for many habaneros it is a place of orientation, since from it they can redirect to other places or nearby areas.
La estructura del puente es robusta, compuesta por una serie de columnas de hormigón armado diseñadas para soportar el tráfico de todo tipo de transportes, así como el tránsito peatonal. Está bordeado por barandillas que le ofrecen atractivo y seguridad.
Además, el puente se ha convertido en una referencia visual y un punto de referencia en la ciudad; para muchos habaneros es un lugar de orientación, ya que desde él pueden redirigirse a otros lugares o zonas cercanas.

During our visit we were able to appreciate that underneath the structure there is a large fair with a series of cubicles and kiosks lined up, where various items such as clothing, footwear, tools, paints, food, etc. are sold. This market offers diverse commercial options, enriching the urban life of the area.
Su ubicación estratégica conecta importantes arterias de la ciudad, facilitando el desplazamiento eficiente entre las diferentes zonas urbanas, mejorando la conectividad y reduciendo los tiempos de viaje.
Durante nuestra visita pudimos apreciar que debajo de la estructura existe una gran feria con una serie de cubículos y quioscos alineados, donde se venden diversos artículos como ropa, calzado, herramientas, pinturas, alimentos, etc. Este mercado ofrece diversas opciones comerciales, enriqueciendo la vida urbana de la zona.
We took the opportunity to go through the pedestrian underpass, a new experience for me. As we ventured through this tunnel, we passed under Rancho Boyeros Avenue. This underpass ensures the safety of pedestrians who move daily through this busy area, plus the traffic on this road is very fast.
Aprovechamos la ocasión para transitar por el paso peatonal subterráneo, una experiencia nueva para mí. Al aventurarnos por este túnel, pasamos por debajo de la Avenida Rancho Boyeros. Este paso subterráneo garantiza la seguridad de los peatones que se mueven diariamente por esta concurrida zona, ademas el transito por esta via es muy rápido.
Upon exiting the tunnel, we decided to walk under the bridge to the platform where several railroad lines pass. We observed several people waiting. This bridge not only facilitates road mobility along Rancho Boyeros Avenue and the surrounding streets, but also improves rail connectivity. Just below the bridge there is a crucial railway access through which all trains departing from the Tulipán terminal in Nuevo Vedado pass to the different municipalities of Artemisa province. This has allowed that the railway traffic does not cross with the other roads in the area obstructing the passage.
Al salir del túnel, decidimos caminar bajo el puente hasta el andén por el que pasan varias líneas de ferrocarril. Observamos a varias personas esperando. Este puente no sólo facilita la movilidad vial a lo largo de la avenida Rancho Boyeros y las calles aledañas, sino que también mejora la conectividad ferroviaria. Justo debajo del puente hay un acceso ferroviario crucial por el que pasan todos los trenes que salen de la terminal de Tulipán, en Nuevo Vedado, hacia los diferentes municipios de la provincia Artemisa. Esto ha permitido que el tráfico ferroviario no se cruce con las demás carreteras de la zona obstruyendo el paso.
Finally, we ascended a concrete stairway that led us to Avenue 100, the top of the bridge. This avenue has two lanes, one for each direction and each of two paths. We walked carefully until we reached the central part of the bridge, from where we had a perfect view of the entire Rancho Boyeros Avenue on both sides, which also has two lanes of different directions and each of three paths and a central separator of almost one meter high.
Finalmente, ascendimos por una escalera de hormigón que nos condujo a la avenida 100, la parte superior del puente. Esta avenida tiene dos carriles, uno para cada sentido y cada uno de dos sendas. Caminamos con cuidado hasta llegar a la parte central del puente, desde donde tuvimos una vista perfecta de toda la avenida Rancho Boyeros a ambos lados, la cual también tiene dos carriles de diferentes sentidos y cada uno de tres sendas y un separador central de casi un metro de altura.
I have traveled this road many times and made use of its facilities, but never before had I had the opportunity to stop and take a close look at this great work that combines elements of road mobility, pedestrian and trade. see you next time!
