Hello friends of Arquitectura+Diseño!
Today I want to tell you about a special place in Havana, located on the corner of Tenienterey and Mercader, called Café Taberna Benny Moré. This is the stage name of Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez, a talented Cuban musician who, thanks to his mastery of the various Cuban rhythms, was known as “El Bárbaro del Ritmo” (The Barbarian of Rhythm). His charisma opened the doors of many Latin American countries and the United States in the 1940s and 1960s.
Benny Moré, born in the town of Santa Isabel de las Lajas, in the province of Cienfuegos. In Cuba we are proud that the world knows a musician of his caliber. Music is an artistic genre that defines Cubans, through which we express everything we feel and what we are.

Hoy quiero hablarles de un lugar especial en La Habana, ubicado en la esquina de Tenienterey y Mercader, que lleva por nombre Café Taberna Benny Moré. Este es el nombre artístico de Maximiliano Moré Gutiérrez, un talentoso músico cubano que, gracias a su dominio de los diversos ritmos cubanos, fue conocido como «El Bárbaro del Ritmo». Su carisma le abrió las puertas de muchos países latinoamericanos y de Estados Unidos en las décadas de 1940 y 1960.
Benny Moré, nacido en el pueblo de Santa Isabel de las Lajas, en la provincia de Cienfuegos. En Cuba nos sentimos orgullosos de que el mundo conozca a un músico de su calibre. La música es un género artístico que define a los cubanos, a través del cual expresamos todo lo que sentimos y lo que somos.
Today, this Café Taberna pays tribute to this musical ambassador who brought Cuban rhythms to the world scene. A representation of the musician, with his peculiar cane that always accompanied him, can be seen on the façade of the premises.
Hoy, este Café Taberna rinde homenaje a este embajador musical que llevó los ritmos cubanos a la escena mundial. Una representación del músico, con su peculiar bastón que siempre le acompañó, puede verse en la fachada del local.
Upon entering, you are surrounded by an atmosphere that transports you to a bar of the time. It has a design with elements of the 50's, which makes you feel as if you were stepping back in time. For me it was a wonderful experience, since that was a time of splendor for Cuban rhythms.
Al entrar, te rodea un ambiente que te transporta a un bar de la época. Tiene un diseño con elementos de los años 50, lo que te hace sentir como si retrocedieras en el tiempo. Para mí fue una experiencia maravillosa, ya que aquella fue una época de esplendor para los ritmos cubanos.
The place is spacious, with a large wooden bar on the right and mirrors at the back. It is equipped with beer dispensers, in the style of those years. Benny Moré's music can be heard in a soft and pleasant tone, creating a cozy atmosphere. In addition, I could appreciate an antique vitrola, something I only used to see in movies or novels of the time, where customers inserted coins and selected the record they wanted to listen to. The music was chosen by the customers who visited the place.
El local es amplio, con una gran barra de madera a la derecha y espejos al fondo. Está equipado con dispensadores de cerveza, al estilo de aquellos años. La música de Benny Moré se escucha en un tono suave y agradable, creando un ambiente acogedor. Además, pude apreciar una antigua vitrola, algo que sólo solía ver en películas o novelas de la época, donde los clientes introducían monedas y seleccionaban el disco que querían escuchar. La música era elegida por los clientes que visitaban el lugar.
Everywhere you can see period paintings, advertisements that were accompanied by the rhythm of this musician and singer. The wooden furniture, in combination with large arched colonial style windows, which have beautiful yellow and blue stained glass windows at the top.
Por todas partes se pueden ver cuadros de época, anuncios publicitarios que se acompañaban al ritmo de este músico y cantante. Los muebles de madera, en combinación con grandes ventanas arqueadas de estilo colonial, que tienen hermosas vidrieras amarillas y azules en la parte superior.
The floor of the room is made up of white squares arranged in a diamond shape in the center, and there are black painted columns scattered throughout. However, my gaze could not stray from the large tapestry-like painting that covers the entire back wall, surrounded by real musical instruments and above it the Cuban flag. Everyone who enters the place is drawn to it, slowly approaching it as if it were an irresistible magnet.
El suelo del salón está formado por cuadrados blancos dispuestos en forma de rombo al centro, y hay columnas pintadas de negro esparcidas por todas partes. Sin embargo, mi mirada no podía apartarse del gran cuadro en forma de tapiz que cubre toda la pared del fondo, rodeado de instrumentos musicales reales y sobre él la bndera cubana. Todo el que entra en el lugar se siente atraído por él, acercándose lentamente como si fuera un imán irresistible.
I must confess that I only went in out of curiosity to see the representation of the musician at the entrance and then my excitement grew when I saw the tapestry in the background, but it was a quick visit, as I was on my way to another place. It was a charming stop in my passage through this area of the city, where I was able to travel to unsuspected latitudes and immerse myself in the rich musical history of Cuba.
Debo confesar que sólo entré por curiosidad al ver la representación del músico en la entrada y luego mi emoción creció al ver el tapiz del fondo, pero fue una visita rápida, ya que me dirigía a otro lugar. Fue una parada encantadora en mi paso por esta zona de la ciudad, donde pude viajar a latitudes insospechadas y sumergirme en la rica historia musical de Cuba.

Remembering musician through building of the time, grand gesture to evoke memories. High ceilings, marble floors, wooden bar we had some buildings like this I recall, not sure whether they are in such excellent condition.

Beny Moré added your region onto the world map of music, more my parents era. Nice to hear his music again (visited YouTube) then looked at the buildings photography, grand indeed.
Thus, it is very nice to have created this space for an artist of his stature who highly praised the Cuban rhythms of that time and which are still heard today.
