A few days ago I took a fascinating tour of the remains of the Havana Wall, an architectural vestige that takes us back to a time of corsairs and pirates. My tour began in a small park in front of La Coubre, at the intersection of Avenida del Puerto and Egido Street, today known as Bélgica Avenue. In this park, among leafy ceiba trees and tall palm trees, there are fragments of the old city wall.Behind this soft vegetation, the remains of the wall can be glimpsed acquiring a magical touch.
This park abounds in ceiba trees, an emblematic tree of Cuban identity, is a constant reminder of our rich cultural and spiritual heritage. This tree, significant in Afro-Cuban traditions and in the Yoruba religion, is considered sacred and is believed to house the souls of the dead. Its presence in the park adds a mystical touch to the place, where a small monument to John Calvin, an influential Protestant theologian and reformer of the 16th century, also stands.
The Havana Wall, built between 1674 and 1740, was an imposing stone wall that surrounded the city. With a length of almost 5 kilometers and a height of 10 meters, it was erected to protect the city from the attacks of corsairs and pirates, who threatened the lives of the inhabitants, as well as their wealth. By the length we can see how small the city was in those years and the development we have achieved over the centuries. Today only small vestiges remain that tell the story of this dazzling city of more than three centuries ago.
Continuing along Bélgica Avenue, I passed in front of the Train Terminal, where the longest stretch of the remains of the wall is located, with one of its entrances still standing. There, a bronze plaque shows the complete design of the wall that once bordered Havana. This section is a tangible testimony of the military engineering of the time and the strategic importance of the city.
Further on, I arrived at the Arsenal, which currently houses the museum of the Speleological Society of Cuba. Although it was closed, I could appreciate that this construction was part of the old wall that protected Havana. This museum is a reminder of how the city has evolved and adapted over the centuries, preserving its history and heritage.
Behind the museum along the back wall stretches abundant vegetation that combines perfectly with these stone walls and make a beautiful set, adorned by the blue sky.
My tour of the remains of the Havana City Wall was a journey back in time, an opportunity to connect with the history of my city and appreciate the beauty of its ancient architectural components. Each fragment of the wall is a testimony to the passage of time and the resilience of Havana, a city that continues to tell its story through its stones and trees.

Every city around the world treasures their own versions of ancient walls that remain standing as beacons of past legacies. I'm glad that Havana still keeps their iconic Havana Wall as a reminder of your country's rich culture and history. Interesting architectural relic @lileisabel! ☺️
That's right friend, there is a lot of talk about the walls of different parts of the world and they all keep the history of their cities, I like that this little piece of yesterday is preserved.
Looking at the photos, I'm truly amazed at how thick the Havana Wall is @lileisabel! At a time when Cuban national security was at stake, formidable fortifications like these architectural relics were crucial. And despite their ancient age, their primitive structures are still beautifully intact today. ☺️
That's right @archmoments I love that those remains of that thick wall are there and to remind us of part of our history and roots.
Thanks You 👍🏽 @wilfredocav
