Unique architectural features of restaurants and hotels around Hikkaduwa, a tourist paradise.

Hi my fellow architecture lovers,

What's up guys? Greetings from Sri Lanka. Recently, I have developed a special motivation within myself to study various architectural features. The month of December is a time when more foreign tourists visit Sri Lanka, so it is not surprising that they visit places with more tourist attractions. Known as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka is a place where you can enjoy the gifts of Mother Nature. Hikkaduwa, located in the Galle district of the Southern Province, is an area that attracts tourists for its beaches and coral reefs. Yesterday I traveled around Hikkaduwa city to explore the exterior architectural features of the restaurants and star class hotels built there.

Buildings with different shapes and architectural features have been constructed in this city due to the high tourist attraction. Most hoteliers target foreign tourists. If you are coming from Colombo to Hikkaduwa, you can use the Coastal Railway, Galle-Colombo Coastal Main Road or the Southern Expressway. At first glance, a wonderful lodge could be seen. A wall was made of dry bamboo to highlight the naturalness. The first floor and the ground floor were finished in a circular shape. Black stones cut into shapes were glued to the wall. It is a unique architectural feature. Wood is used for doors and windows. The second floor can be seen as a veranda area. This is the first time I have seen a lodge built like this.

A hotel building, built using traditional architecture, but now closed, could be seen next. It doesn't look very attractive, but there are some beautiful shapes emerging from the stairs leading up. There is no indication that the building has been used recently.

There was a three-star hotel complex completed using modern architecture. Although there is nothing special here, I was attracted by the brown shapes used on the concrete beams.

Meanwhile, a small lodge built highlighting modern architectural features caught my eye. The black and white color adds to the appeal of this lodge. Nowadays, this technology is also used to build many houses.

The building called Lucky Elephant Hotel also had a modern look. But the glass had a beautiful carved shape. The front building has an old tiled roof. An elephant's head is displayed as a marker on the upper wall.

While traveling around Hikkaduwa city, we saw an old building built using Dutch architectural features. Because of its wall and the gate was closed, I was able to photograph only the upper part of the building. However, I think it will be enough to get a rough idea about the architecture of this building. An old Dutch emblem was engraved on the wall below the roof. It bears a resemblance to the logo on one of the entrances to the Galle Dutch Fort. Dutch architectural features are also displayed in the wood carvings used to cover the windows. Seeing such old houses is also heartwarming.

Wow, I was captivated by a beautiful lodge with a wall that beautifully highlights the black stone shapes. Even if it is a small building, its architectural features are sure to mesmerize you. Large concrete beams painted white give the building a sense of austerity. The old tiled roof also gives it an antique look. According to my opinion, tourists are more attracted to these lodges. The windows on the lower floor are made in a simple shape, and the carving with color combination gives more shine. Ornamental plants are grown to enhance the garden decoration.

The Prague restaurant called Light Sunshine was open. Although it was billed as a Prague restaurant, the architectural features of the Czech Republic were not reflected in the building. Maybe the food and drinks made in the Czech Republic are prepared here. Therefore, the above name may have been given.

Meanwhile, a newly constructed building caught the eye. The upper triangular shape of its roof and windows is different. I have rarely seen such window shape in our country. Therefore, I was happy to see a different architectural feature in Hikkaduwa area.

Met a restaurant that provides food and accommodation for tourists who won my attraction. Its name is Sundowners. The half-light inside and other architectural features give the city of Hikkaduwa a light. Ornamental plants add beauty to the garden on a concrete floor.

Vicky Preschool is a beautiful architectural building. The roof was made in a traditional shape and on the wall below the roof, Mickey Mouse symbols were painted in places. The three buildings adjacent to each other here were built with ancient architectural features used by the rich people of Sri Lanka in the past.

DK Restaurant was amazingly built. It had a medium-sized door to enter and it can be observed from the outside that there are several floors inside. This different shape may be a ploy to attract tourists.

The completion of Avendra Garden Hotel, which was built at the same time, is magnificent. A parking lot was also reserved for the convenience of tourists. The front of the hotel is built in the form of a fort. The roof above the main entrance has been given an interesting curved shape. Avendra Garden Hotel has exceptional architectural features to give its exterior appearance.

What we saw next was not a tourist hotel. An institution that provides essential transportation facilities to tourists was being built in a unique shape. As the work has not been completed yet, it is not possible to mention the final result. However, it has gained more attraction due to the cultivation and spread of a species of vine with beautiful flowers on its side wall.

A popular five-star hotel complex among local and foreign tourists, Citrus is a place where more people can get accommodation and delicious food. A few years ago, our company staff and family members stayed here to attend a get-together, so the food was delicious. They prepare a variety of food recipes and any food and drink can be enjoyed at the restaurant. You can choose rooms with architectural features that appeal to tourists.

A building that was for rent or lease and is currently not being used for any business purposes caught my attention because of its beautiful architectural features inside and out. The old fashioned wooden staircase is attractive. But it was made of cement. The interior doors and windows were similar to Dutch architecture. Ample space has been reserved for balcony areas.

20221228_084012.jpg

The building, known as the Lion's Paradise, has an attractive appearance due to the bricks attached to the front wall. Also, due to the discolored color of the side wall, it has an old appearance, but it has got an ancient face.

Although the building does not have many valuable architectural features, the area around the entrance and the upper balcony area is built with stone shapes and has acquired historical value.

There is no doubt that the above hotel, which has been completed with a very attractive appearance, looks so beautiful from the outside, it must have been built in a special condition inside. Parking facilities are available in front of the hotel. A natural value is given by spreading an ornamental vine along the wall between the concrete beams. Brown, white and red colors match well for the windows here.

Met another beautiful hotel with a different color and architectural features. There were windows of an old Dutch architectural shape, but only a certain resemblance. Oval and rectangular shapes were widely used in the Dutch period. Ornamental plants have been planted to bring nature to the hotel.

An old building whose walls had not been painted for a long time could be seen near Hikkaduwa city. I photographed it because the old buildings have more value nowadays.

20221228_084426.jpg

Another attractive architectural feature is the Coral Beach Hotel, built on the Hikkaduwa seafront. It has been completed using foreign building technology. Tinted windows have a shiny look. During this trip, I got to see old and modern buildings with different architectural features, so I gathered new experiences. See you in nest.

Greetings @madushanka. Fascinating place! Hikkaduwa - such an interesting name for a tourist paradise! May I know its origins and why it's called that way? That community is certainly another interesting location in Sri Lanka, and since it's an attractive hotspot for hospitality businesses to cater to local/foreign visitors, we'd expect a lot of respective architecture constructed there. 😊

Of all the beautiful buildings you've featured here, which one has caught your attention the most, aroused your curiosity, and why?
