Visiting the Old Town of Semarang, Heaven of Beautiful Buildings

Hi everybody. How are you? I hope you're okay. You know, have I ever been to Semarang? I visited several places and I have posted. In this post, I want to tell you about the Semarang Old Town Area. Located in the city center of Semarang which has an area of about 31 hectares. Previously, this area was oudestad. The region later became a trading center in the 19th and 20th centuries. After all, this is a Dutch colonial legacy.

In this area there are Dutch offices and trading companies. It is estimated that there are 50 Dutch company buildings in the area. To this day, the building is still standing. And what about the architecture in this region? In this region, art deco, Renaissance, baroque and Semarangan. The whole style of the building is so beautiful.

In 2012, revitalization was carried out. In fact, the old city of Semarang is known as Little Holland. I want to tell you about my trip to this place. I walked east along the old city of Semarang. 700 yards [100 m] from where the bridge crosses the Semarang River. The leaflet is called gouvernebrug. Locals call it the bridge mberok.

In the past, a suspension bridge known as oudestat, which was built in 1705, a suspension bridge, a bridge suspended on four pillars. Then on Jalan MPU Tantular there are old buildings such as Mandiri Bank offices, PT Phapros, PT Pelni, churches and others. Of particular interest is the church of Immanuel, built in 1753 in the shape of an octagon. Locals call it the Blenduk church which is the icon of the old city of Semarang.

Not far from the church, there is a Sri Gunting City park. In the past, this park was called the Plein Parade. It was set up for Dutch citizens to watch the parade of Dutch soldiers along the Herenstraat. Behind the Blenduk Church is a former building belonging to the Indonesian Trade Company. Today, the building is a center for community-made goods. When I visited, there was a batik exhibition.

Nearby is the marba building, built in the mid-19th century, with impressive neo-classical architecture. From the information I got, the building belonged to a wealthy merchant from Yemen named Marta Banjenet. Not far from this area is the Spiegel building which was built in 1895 with a magnificent Spanish architectural design. It is used to sell luxury textiles.

The building was damaged by non-maintenance. However, today it has become a bar and bistro. Not far from the building there is a 3-story Jiwasraya building. This building has an art deco architectural design which was built in 1916. It was designed by a very famous architecture at that time, namely ir Thomas karsten. It used to be nederlandsch indische levenverzekering DE lijfrente (nillmij).

From the information I got that this building might be the mayor's office. The most interesting thing is that this building is equipped with an elevator as well. However, in 1994 it was changed to Jiwasraya's office. Not far from the building is the former Van Dorp building which was once the largest printing house in Semarang. This is now turned into a dream museum zone.

Then the area on the cendrawasih street is an old building called statschouwburg. At one time, they used to make city comedy which was a Dutch showroom. This area currently sells a lot of food and drink.

There are many cafes that are perfect for photo backdrops. The old buildings in this area are very attractive and a magnet for tourists who visit this place. From the information I got, if this place has been registered as a UNESCO World Heritage.

I find this part interesting. I imagine that it is made of concrete that protrudes from the structure. I imagine that it is a style of "roof" that does not allow water to pass through the windows, nor within the internal structure.

hallo sister @ginethchira2301 That part also interests me. I'm very impressed with the design. thanks for dropping by

Amazing! The historic town of Semarang is what we can call "a place frozen in time" dear @nnurdiani. Because of its numerous preserved infrastructure from the past, I bet it must have been a thrilling experience for you. 😊 What would you consider your favorite building there with a Dutch-inspired architectural style and why? Can you show us a photo of its beauty?
