I do not know if there is such a word as "kurzal" in other languages, but in Estonia, such buildings were an integral part of the resort life of the Baltic coast in the second part of the 19th century and at the beginning of the last century. This word - Kursaal or Kurhaus - came into the Estonian and Russian languages from German where "kur" is from the word resort (kurort), and the second part of the word is a "hall" or a "house", a "room". Kurzals, or Resort Halls, were relaxation and entertainment centers in resort towns, where vacationers spent their time after swimming in the sea and various medical procedures. They were places for concerts and different performances held by actors from Russian and Estonian theatres as well as the locals or even the vacationers. There could be game rooms and casinos, and later - cinemas. There usually also were cafes or restaurants.

In the southwest of Estonia, there is a small town of Haapsalu. In the second half of the 19th century, therapeutic mud was found here, and the town turned into a popular resort. It was so popular that even the Russian royal family visited it for treatment. To make their travel from St. Petersburg comfortable, a beautiful railway station was constructed in the town. Already at the end of the 19th century, a spa hall appeared in Haapsalu.
The Haapsalu Kurhaus was designed by the architect Knüpffer. The great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky often visited Haapsalu to get treatment in the local mud baths. People say that he would often come to the Kurhaus.

The building of Kurhaus was made of wood and richly decorated with intricate carvings. This is more typical of old buildings in Russia. And this is not surprising, since at the time it was being built, Estonia was part of the Russian Empire.

Haapsalu Kurhaus is the only one in Estonia that has retained its original appearance. A cafe is open here in summer. I was there at the beginning of May, so the Resort Hall was closed, it was being repaired and prepared for opening.

During the two weeks of my stay in Haapsalu, there was only one Saturday when the doors of the Kurhaus opened and the cafe worked but only outside. But the weather was wonderful - sunny and warm for this time of year, so it did not frighten us, but only made us happy.

We ordered coffee which was excellent there - prettily served and delicious. The bill was accompanied with small cards with historical photos on them. A very sweet memory of a pleasant time spent there.

The location of the Resort Hall on the sea promenade makes the walk to it very pleasant. Swans and wild ducks swim in the sea. And in general, the design of the area is such that it seems to return you to the old days. Everything here, including the wooden benches along the walking path, is designed in the same style. In one of the photos you can see a summer stage, also made of wood. Concerts are still taking place there.

Thank you for showing us this traditional Estonian architecture! The wooden carvings are really impressive. It does resemble some of the country houses I saw in Russia.

I think that carving of wood for architectural decoration of buildings was brought to Estonia from Russia. Estonian style is usually different - very laconic, simple but still interesting.

It is certainly a beautiful place.
Its mouldings make it so romantic in that setting 💗
I really liked it, thanks for sharing @olgavita.

Thank you your kind words, @garvi! My object is not as stunning as yours, but I still find it very beautiful and historically important.

Of course it is @olgavita 😉

Hello and a friendly welcome @olgavita to the Architecture+Design Community. That resort hall called the Kurhaus is quite an interesting landmark. An unknowing guest would probably have no idea of the historic value that building possessed, having been the relaxation site for the Russian royal family and the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Fortunately, that prestigious structure was well preserved and was able to maintain its original splendor for current generations to enjoy. Amazing!

Thank you for joining the OCD Community Boost Contest for Architecture+Design. Beautiful post!

Thank you for your welcoming words, @storiesoferne, I am happy to join such a friendly community. ❤️

This kind of structure always amazes me, because it is made of wood and with its intricate design that surely takes hours to be completed. A true treasure of the yesteryears.

Thank you for stopping by, @afterglow. That building impressed me too because I also like old wooden houses, especially of that style.

You're welcome (^_^)
