Hi, fellow architects and designers. This is my first article regarding architecture & design here. Hope you like it!
So this was a conceptual drawing provided to a client for a church to be constructed in Central India. Though the project didnt come into existence there were a few things that I learnt which I would like to share with you.
Starting with the design aspect or language used in the building these are some points that seemed to astonish me and gave a good result in the final aesthetics and feel of the overall design.
- Raw use of materials/unfinished surfaces
- Placement of openings and masses in thirds to create a Gothic sense into modern Brutalist architecture
- Combined use of glass and concrete to create interesting dynamism and highlight certain portions specifically placed in thirds to provide the elevation a balance throughout
Use of repitition in the auditorium part which contained maximum number of openings hence creating interesting patterns inside the prayer hall.
The openings of the building were flushed inside to add a layer and to act as surfaces which catch light and provide depth.
These openings contained stained glass which again caught light and provided a good backdrop to highlight certain areas of the building exteriors as well as interiors.
Here is one another view of the design. Hope you like it!

This is a unique church design because of the absence of an elongated bell tower (if I am not mistaken that this is a Christian/Catholic church because of the cross).
Yes you are correct about the design. This Church was designed in a language of design known as Brutalist architecture. Though the Church doesnt contain the iconic bell tower but it has other elements of design that are seen in Churches. The volume and the placement of elements done throughout the buiding elevation is done in thirds and sacred geometry.
Yeah it looks cool.
I know what I would love to see to add to the dynamics and add a contrasting beuty to it and that would be to add greenery/plants/ferns/palms in the exterenal indents where the windows are.
Plants make people happy and calm because they emit so much peace and to have that natural peace in a church would make it so much more divine for everyone I think..
What about you @shakedandbaked would you like to see some natural flora there too?
Sure! I like the idea of adding greenery to the structure. This was actually the basic identity design for the church. So it had to be minimal in order to explain the design to the clergy.
There were many additions and alterations in the design like the one suggested by you. Thanks for the enthusiasm. I would like to hear more from you.
