Sweet Name of Jesus Church

Good vibes hivers of the world.

This is the first church where I don't see a crucified Christ on the altar. In its place is the baby Jesus dressed in phosphorescent green. I think so that it can be seen.

This is the Dulce nombre de Jesús church, better known as the church of Petare, located in the heart of the colonial quarter of Petare, Caracas, Venezuela. This church was built with the founding of the town of Petare, about 400 years ago, and was originally made of adobe walls and cane roof. It was extremely rustic and simple.

Over the years renovations, extensions and improvements were made to its construction materials. According to what I was told, it was finished about 180 years ago or more and it was restored less than 15 years ago. Its walls are made of adobe, the roof is made of wood on the inside and concrete on the outside.

Externally it is painted in pink and the bell tower rises at its southern end. It has three entrance doors, made of wood. The roof is gabled with three naves, a central one and two smaller lateral ones.

The granite floor keeps a secret very close to the vertex with the wall. There we can see tombstones with different dates between the XIX and XX centuries. However, the oldest tombstone dates from 1795 and belonged to a woman named "Del Pozo", who is said to be the aunt of Antonio José de Sucre, Venezuela's independence hero.

You may wonder what a tombstone is doing on the floor of a church, and here I tell you what I have been told. It was customary until before the presidency of Antonio Guzmán Blanco, back in 1870, that the cemeteries were next to the church and that even people of high society set aside a space inside the church to be buried.

Today, in order to preserve this part of history - and to avoid the wear and tear of the tombstones due to pedestrian traffic - they have been placed on the floor, next to the side walls.

In the upper part of the church we see walls in the form of a small arch and then a larger one that end in columns placed on both sides of the central nave. Attached to one of the columns is a holy water font in the shape of a seashell, which caught my attention.

The candelabra in circular form and of double height, resemble candles, giving a touch of majesty to the place. Stained glass windows abound with Christian scenes of virgins and saints.

I found out that during the restoration they removed the paint from the walls and discovered ornaments and paintings dating from colonial times on the side doors.

Next to the altar there is a space where there are two large paintings, donated by the painter Tito Salas, a native of Petare, where you can see the Christ of Health and the Nativity. Derbys, my guide on this visit, explained to us that the paintings were donated after Tito Salas received a miracle in the life of his daughter who was very ill.

It is a church that does not abound in opulence or exuberance, however, it is very rich in history, that history that we do not find in the history books and that is so tasty to know it in the same place of the facts.

AHORA EN ESPAÑOL

Buena vibra hivers del mundo.

a8446d7f-f6ad-46d6-afc6-d481ea0cd1c4.jpg

Thank you my friend. Yes, it is a wonderful place. We need to go one day, i am sure, you will like it.

@tibaire how beautiful this church is, and the detail of dressing it in green I didn't know...

Yes, dear @mosa71 , it is an spectacular church with many history

Beautiful this church, I love its facade, its color and its interior is also wonderful. Interesting what you tell us about the tombstones, I didn't know about that.

Hello @doriangel , yes, it is a church that although very simple beautiful and the most interesting thing is the history that hides inside, the floor, the tombstones, the paintings of Tito Salas.

Hi @tibaire, certainly a church with a lot to tell, curious about the tombstones, the lamps are very nice, the side arches form a beautiful path to the altar, the color of the church is very peculiar, I had never seen a pink church.

Happy night!

ello, like you, I was surprised with the color of the church. The tombstones have caught my attention so much that I am now on the hunt for other churches that have tombstones. I understand that the cathedral in Caracas has tombstones. When I visit it I will tell you about it.

Great friend, I will be watching to see those tombstones of the Cathedral of Caracas, it is interesting to know the details of the churches.

Happy day!

this is a very extraordinary post. I also imagine your struggle to do and get these photos in the middle of a crowd of people.

It seems that it has become a fairly old church building in your city. I'm also interested in seeing pink paint for outdoor, very non-mainstream for church buildings, especially classic churches.
