An Idle Man is a Depressed Man
I’ve been an idle man, and I’ve been an active man, and I assure you that if you are depressed and idle, that is most likely the reason.
Especially for people who live in modern cities, it’s incredibly easy to fall into a sedentary lifestyle without even realizing it. For people who work remotely, like myself, the temptation is even greater.
I can never forget a video I watched. It showed a chair alongside cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine, and other harmful substances, asking: which of these is the most dangerous? The answer: the chair.
While this is arguably inaccurate, it helped me realize something important. Many people, including myself, spend most of their time working full-time jobs where they sit for 8 hours a day. Back then, it wasn’t an issue for me because I used to work out regularly on weekdays.
We rarely think of a chair, a couch, or a bed as something harmful, but if most of your days are spent sitting or lying down, you’re slowly destroying your health.
One quote that I fell in love with is: “The bed is the tomb for the youth.” Right after I read it, I started thinking about all the time I wasted lying in bed, watching movies, series, or endlessly scrolling.
I recently learned that to tame the mind, you must first exhaust the body. Once you do that, you’ll fall asleep faster, you’ll be in better shape, your racing thoughts will subside for a while, and you’ll feel calmer and more composed.
About four years ago, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Since then, nothing has helped me tame and control my mind as much as sports have.
Exhaust the body. Tame the mind.
