La Isla Misteriosa es una novela de ficción escrita por el francés Julio Verne y publicada entre los años 1874 y 1875. Se dice que es su obra maestra, y aunque no he leído otras obras de este autor, puedo decir que es una historia muy interesante y elaborada. En esta publicación haré mi reseña de esta novela.
Julio Verne era un escritor con una imaginación de otro nivel. La Isla Misteriosa encarna la historia de unos náufragos en una isla del Océano Pacífico, pero añadiendo detalles y elementos que se salen de lo usual, haciendo de la historia algo parecido a una película de misterios y enigmas, combinado con drama de supervivencia.

To give some context, 5 men and a dog escape in a aerostatic balloon from a war prison in the United States, a country which is in a civil war, but a hurricane drifts them into the ocean for several days, and a failure in their aerostatic balloon causes them to fall into the sea, right next to an small island, which is located next to an island.

Para dar un poco de contexto, 5 hombres y un perro, escapan en un globo aerostático de una prisión de guerra en Estados Unidos, país el cual se encuentra en una guerra civil, pero un huracán los desvía hacia el océano por varios días, y un fallo en su globo hace que caigan al mar, justo al lado de un islote, el cual se sitúa al lado de una isla.
We are set in the year 1865. These men are lost in the ocean but at the same time they are escaping from a civil war and have nothing to lose. A short time later they realize that they are on an island, and that it is apparently uninhabited. In honor of the president of their country, they name it "Lincoln Island". They decide to call themselves citizens of Lincoln Island, and not castaways, which psychologically speaking, perhaps was a perception that helped them to cope with their situation better, as they are predisposed to bring civilization to this remote island, instead of letting it turn them into "savages".

The 5 men are Ciro Smith, an engineer who knows many things; Pencroff, a marine captain; Gideon Spillett, a journalist; Harbert, a teenager and Pencroff's son; and Nab, a former slave freed by Ciro and in his service. They were accompanied by Top, the engineer's dog. It is really impressive how these 5 men manage to do what they did in the novel, taking advantage of every resource around them to not only survive, but recreate many comforts of civilization, such as clothing, crops, training farm animals, mills, blacksmithing, etc. In 1 year on the island they already had a whole village built on the island and enviable comforts.
Los 5 hombres son Ciro Smith, un ingeniero que sabe muchas cosas; Pencroff, un marino capitán; Gedeón Spillett, un periodista; Harbert, adolescente e hijo de Pencroff; y Nab, ex-esclavo liberado por Ciro y a su servicio. Les acompañaba Top, el perro del ingeniero. Es realmente impresionante como estos 5 hombres logran hacer lo que hicieron en la novela, aprovechando todo recurso a su alrededor para no solo sobrevivir, sino recrear muchas comodidades de la civilización, como ropa, cultivos, adiestramiento de animales de granja, molinos, herrería, etc. En 1 año en la isla ya tenían toda una aldea construida en la isla y comodidades envidiables.

It is very surreal the way they progress and prosper within the island. They seem to have everything at their disposal and know how to solve any problem to recreate the comforts of civilization. I came to think that this was some "dream", and that they had all perished by falling from the balloon into the sea. Perhaps this is Jules Verne's way of saying, metaphorically, that if there is harmony and respect among all, everything is possible. There was no conflict among them, there is perfect harmony among the characters. Through synergistic effort, there was nothing that could stop them and all the necessary sustenance they would have, even in a survival situation.

Llegué a pensar que se trataba de algún "sueño", y que todos habían fallecido al caer del globo al mar. Quizás es una forma de Julio Verne de decir, de manera metafórica, que si hay armonía y respeto entre todos, todo es posible. No había conflictos entre ellos, existe una armonía perfecta entre los personajes. Mediante el esfuerzo sinérgico, no había nada que les pudiera detener y todo el sustento necesario lo tendrían, aún en una situación de supervivencia.
But even if everything was going smoothly between them, there were external factors that threatened them. Pirates, an active volcano, and wild animals inside the island. There is also an episode where a pack of monkeys attacks their settlement, and after repelling the attack, they adopt one of the monkeys to serve as their servant. They call him "Maese Jup". The five men were people with deep religious beliefs, and finding no explanation for this mysterious entity that gave them signs and helped them, they increasingly attributed it to some divine sign. However, no matter how hard they searched the island, they found no sign of anything or anyone else. The important thing is that this entity was favorable to them, and not for an arbitrary reason. Although in the end they discover the identity of this entity, the truth is that the settlers of Lincoln Island could never have survived if they had not been united from the beginning, without the harmony that existed between them, the mutual respect and the continuous desire to create something positive for the world, despite the circumstances.
Los 5 hombres eran personas con profundas creencias religiosas, y al no encontrar explicación a este misterioso ente que les daba señales y les ayudaba, cada vez más lo atribuían a alguna señal divina. Sin embargo, por más que buscaran en la isla, no encontraba señal de algo o alguien más. Lo importante del asunto, es que este ente les era favorable, y no por una razón arbitraria. Si bien al final ellos descubren la identidad de este ente, lo cierto es que los colonos de la Isla Lincoln nunca hubieran podido sobrevivir si no hubieran estado unidos desde el principio, sin la armonía que había entre ellos, el respeto mutuo y el deseo continuo de crear algo positivo para el mundo, a pesar de las circunstancias.
All in all, it is a novel worth reading. Although it took me a while to read it (since sometimes I would stop and days would go by without continuing), it was still very enjoyable to finish this novel. The reading is full of details, words that were used in those old days, which takes you back to that time. There is an animated version of this novel, 47 minutes long and you can find it on YouTube, however, there the story is quite simplified and several things are omitted.

En definitiva, es una novela que vale la pena leer. Aunque tardé un poco leyéndola (ya que en ocasiones paraba y pasaban días sin continuarla), igualmente fue muy ameno terminar esta novela. La lectura está llena de detalles, palabras que se usaban antes (como "dehesa"), lo cual te traslada a aquella época. Existe una versión animada de esta novela, de 47 minutos de duración y la puedes encontrar en YouTube, sin embargo, allí la historia se simplifica bastante y se omiten varias cosas.

Lo he estado leyendo desde que tengo 15 años, y la Isla Misteriosa es un libro que te deja con ganas de leer más novelas de él.
Si mal no recuerdo, es como una especie de trilogía entre "Los hijos del Capitan Grant" una novela de Julio Verne, y otro libro, del que no recuerdo el título.
