Looking at the cover of Hopeless, I was definitely not expecting a book with such a challenging plot. It is labelled 16+ on the back, but in my opinion it could even be 18+.
At first the plot seemed cheesy to me, because how much can you read about a teenage girl who is new to school, falls in love with the school bully and her best friend is gay? I'll admit I was put off reading after the first few chapters, but I kept going because of some mysterious threads I wanted to unravel.
The main character's life completely changes in just a few months. It's all because of her decision to stop homeschooling in her senior year of high school and go to a public school and meet a mysterious boy who seems to know a lot about her. This is what the whole book is based on.
What I liked about this book is definitely that the plot is full of well thought out mysteries and twists. The book is literally filled with them, so there is no boredom. At the very end, the reader finds out the whole truth, and is kept in suspense beforehand, so that the whole book can be read quickly.
However, on the other hand, all these events are a bit surreal. I'm not saying impossible, but I would find the story a little hard to believe. Also, the pace of events is a bit too fast and, despite the fact that the book is not one of the shortest, the timing of all the events also seems a bit unrealistic to me. Another thing I'll stick to is how the characters react to traumatic events - again, I find it unrealistic that after (spoiler alert) witnessing someone's suicide someone is able to function normally a day later. I also didn't like the way the main characters sometimes behaved or spoke to each other, but here I would have to say a lot more about the plot.
All in all, I have mixed feelings about this book. It's engaging, that's a fact, but at times some things just didn't fit with it. I definitely wouldn't recommend it to younger readers.
I have a love-hate relationship with Colleen Hoover's books (especially after November 9). What do you guys think? Have you heard of Hopeless or any of Colleen Hoover's other books? I'd love to hear other opinions.

Patrząc na okładkę "Hopeless", zdecydowanie nie spodziewałam się książki o tak trudnej fabule. Z tyłu widnieje oznaczenie 16+, ale moim zdaniem mogłoby to być nawet 18+.
Z początku fabuła wydawała mi się tandetna, bo ile można czytać o nastolatce, która jest nowa w szkole, zakochuje się w szkolnym łobuzie, a jej najlepszy przyjaciel jest gejem? Przyznam, że po kilku pierwszych rozdziałach odechciało mi się czytać, ale brnęłam w to dalej ze względu na kilka tajemniczych wątków, które chciałam rozwikłać.
Życie głównej bohaterki całkowicie zmienia się w ciągu zaledwie kilku miesięcy. Wszystko przez decyzję o zaprzestaniu nauczania domowego w ostatniej klasie szkoły średniej i udaniu się do szkoły publicznej i poznanie tajemniczego chłopaka, który zdaje się bardzo dużo o niej wiedzieć. Na tym opiera się cała książka.
Co mi się podobało w tej książce to zdecydowanie to, że fabuła jest pełna dobrze przemyślanych tajemnic i zwrotów akcji. Książka jest dosłownie nimi przepełniona, więc nie ma nudy. Na samym końcu czytelnik dowiaduje się całej prawdy, a wcześniej jest trzymany w napięciu, co pozwala szybko przeczytać ją całą.
Jednak z drugiej strony wszystkie te wydarzenia są nieco surrealistyczne. Nie mówię, że niemożliwe, ale trochę ciężko byłoby mi uwierzyć w tą historię. Poza tym, tempo wydarzeń jest trochę za szybkie i pomimo tego, że książka do najkrótszych nie należy, to rozmieszczenie wszystkich wydarzeń w czasie również wydaje mi się nieco mało realne. Kolejną rzeczą, do której się przyczepię to fakt, jak postacie reagują na traumatyczne wydarzenia - znowu jest to dla mnie mało realistyczne, że po (uwaga - spojler) byciu świadkiem czyjegoś samobójstwa ktoś jest w stanie dzień później normalnie funkcjonować. Nie podobało mi się też to, w jaki sposób czasami zachowywali się lub odzywali się do siebie główni bohaterowie, ale tutaj akurat musiałabym powiedzieć dużo więcej o fabule.
Podsumowując, mam mieszane uczucia co do tej książki. Jest wciągająca, to fakt, ale czasami niektóre rzeczy po prostu do niej nie pasowały. Zdecydowanie nie poleciłabym jej młodszym czytelnikom.
