Hello reading enthusiasts! đ
Since January 2023, I have started reading again and since then, I have loved it! I read between 4 and 6 books per month. đ
I mostly read romance and new romance. And yet, before, a few years ago, I read a lot of psychological thrillers and I loved them!
For Christmas, I received the book âThe Housemaidâ by Freida McFadden as a gift. I had already heard about it many times on social networks, notably on Instagram and BookTok (on TikTok). Many said it was a gem of a book, with an unexpected twist and suspense that we love! So, I was really, really looking forward to reading it. And itâs done! đ
So here is my first book review. đ
đč Synopsis :
The Housemaid (in French itâs âLa Femme de MĂ©nageâ) is the story of Millie Calloway, a young woman who has not always had luck in life and who struggles to find work. When the opportunity to work as a housemaid for a wealthy New York family presents itself, she seizes this unexpected chance to turn her life around.
Millie is grateful for this second chance, but she quickly discovers that not everything is as perfect as it seems in the house where she works. Nina Winchester, his boss, is unstable, angry and toxic. Little Cecelia is suspicious, capricious and unpredictable. Only Mr. Winchester is attentive and charming.
The secrets and mysteries surrounding the family she works for begin to emerge quite quickly. And Millie finds herself drawn into a dangerous game where appearances are deceiving. She must navigate lies and manipulation to discover the truth before it is too late.
đčWhat I thought of the book :
I literally devoured this book. I read it in a few hours, I was so caught up in the story, I wanted to know the rest, the outcome, to understand... I really enjoyed my reading and I didn't have the time to bore me!
From the prologue, and the first chapters, we are put in the mood: strange events, strange reactions, inappropriate behavior... We are already starting to ask ourselves questions. The plot is truly captivating! đ
I loved the character of Millie, she is a courageous woman, who wants to get out of trouble and who is ready to do anything to do so. She accepts being belittled and humiliated to find a place in society. And for that alone, I admire her. đ„°
Apart from Millie, I found that the characters of Nina and Andrew were also well developed. Especially Nina's character. She is a complex character, whom I hated and found very unpleasant at times. But deep down, I really wanted to understand the reason for her behavior (so you could say I became attached to her in a way).
The book is divided into three parts: the first part reveals Millie's point of view, the second finally reveals Nina's point of view. Besides, I loved this change of point of view, which really gives a rhythm to the book!
And the third part (which is the shortest), reveals everyoneâs secrets and the outcome of the story. Besides, what an outcome! Revelations and twists and turns await you.
What I really liked about reading this book was the mix of emotions I felt: anxiety, fear, apprehension, worry, excitement... I wasn't bored for a single second.
đč My rating :
ââââ, 5 / 5 (4,5/5)
Why not 5/5? Quite simply, because after having seen videos or articles on this book, I was expecting a great plot twist, so before even arriving at the ending, I had already imagined several scenarios in my head, including one which looked a lot like the one in the book. I wasn't as surprised as I thought I would be (but that's my fault, I shouldn't have watched so much content around this book).
đč And what's next ?
I know there is a second book, called 'The Housemaid's Secrets.' It was released in France in October 2023, but in paperback format. However, I am one of those slightly annoying people who don't want to buy the sequel to a book if it is not in the same format. And since I have the first book in pocket format, I want to wait for the pocket format of the second book (which will probably be released at the end of 2024).
In truth, I don't know if I will buy and read the sequel. Even though the epilogue makes you want to read the next book, I'm a little afraid of being disappointed because I'm not sure I'll find the element of surprise that I really enjoyed in the first book.
Well, maybe out of curiosity, I'll read it anyway. If I do, I'll write a review. đ
I discovered the author Freida McFadden with The Housemaid, and I found her style quite interesting. I really want to discover other books by this author. By the way, I saw that she wrote âNever lieâ, another psychological thriller. Have you read it? What did you think of it?
đč Conclusion :
And you? Have you read this book? What did you think of it? Did you enjoy your reading?
And by the way, do you have any psychological thrillers in the same genre to recommend to me? đ€
See you soon,
Johanna
PS: For the English part, I tried to translate it myself, but I also used Google Translate and Deepl.

A bientĂŽt đ

I've already moved the book to my kindle, I'm almost 100% sure that will be my next read.
