Este es mi primer book review (aunque yo no lo llamaría tal). Digamos que es mi primer intento de escribir uno. Es más bien un comentario sobre una lectura sugerida para una tarea escolar.
This is my first book review (although I would not call it a review. It is more of a commentary on an assigned reading for a school asignment)
En una clase de comprensión lectora, el profesor nos mandó a formar grupos de 4, y escoger cualquier libro que quisiéramos. Nos recomendó un par; algunos informativos, otros narrativos. Nos inclinamos hacia el lado informativo, ya que supusimos que sería más sencillo hacer el resumen que nos pedían. En parte fue cierto.
Entre los libros que sugirió el profesor, nos llamó la atención uno en especifico, llamado, Sangre en el diván. Nos llamó la atención por varias razones. Primero, era una historia real. Segundo, paso aquí en Venezuela. Tercero, tenía un título atractivo. Por último (pero no menos importante), fue el primero que encontramos en Google.

Es una historia real narrada por la periodista Ibeyise Pacheco, quien nos permite seguir de cerca los sucesos que se desencadenaron tras la acusación de homicidio al reconocido psiquiatra, candidato presidencial y ex rector de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, Edmundo Chirinos por la muerte de Roxana Vargas. La periodista pudo entrevistar no solo al Doctor Chirinos, sino también a los detectives a cargo del caso, así como a otro grupo de personas que estuvieron involucradas.
La historia en definitiva es muy cruda. El libro narra muchos detalles de forma gráfica, como las cosas que hizo Chirinos al cometer el homicidio, el reporte de la forense sobre el estado del cadáver o lo que Chirinos hacia a otras pacientes. La narración te atrapa desde el principio, y conforme avanza el libro, te sigues preguntando en qué terminará todo. Es muy interesante como la autora te va llevando pista por pista, sin dejarte ver lo que sigue. Te sientes atrapada tratando de averiguar la siguiente pista que siguieron, y no puedes parar de leer. Es increíble.
Fue muy interesante esta experiencia, y fue chévere compartir pensamientos, e ideas con mis compañeras de grupo. Estuvimos leyendo durante la clase de castellano, y un par de clases más.

Sin embargo, el libro no es para todos los gustos. Una de nuestras compañeras no siguió leyendo porque no le gustó. Se sintió incomoda con los detalles sobre el homicidio. Supongo que lectores sensibles no terminarán el libro. A pesar de eso, a mí en lo particular, me gustan este tipo de historias; las suelo ver en películas o series, pero fue interesante leerlo.
Creo que imaginar que es una simple historia nos hace pasar el trago amargo de la realidad. La verdad es que este tipo de cosas no siempre son ficción; pasan, y da miedo. Hay que ser cuidadosos sobre a quién le confiamos nuestra seguridad, nuestra vida. Esta historia pasó en MI país, y eso aterra, pero es importante aprender de estas tragedias. Obviamente, no es común que un doctor, alguien que goza de la confianza y respeto de pacientes y familiares, termine asesinando a sus pacientes, pero igual, pasa. La cosa es que, como libro es increíble. Hacen falta más libros de periodismo de investigación; sobre todo si se trata de casos que involucran a gente importante. Los ricos y poderosos tienden a sentirse intocables y hacen muchas cosas malas porque sienten que nadie se atreverá a investigarlos. Este fue un caso excepcional. Creo que es una historia que más personas deberían conocer. Cuando puedan busquen… Sangre en el diván.

In a reading comprehension class, the teacher told us to form groups of 4, and choose any book we wanted. He recommended a couple; some informational, some narrative. We leaned toward the informational side, as we figured it would be easier to do the summary we were asked to do. It was partly true.
Among the books the professor suggested, one in particular caught our attention, called, Blood on the Chaise Longue. It caught our attention for several reasons. First, it was a true story. Second, it happened here in Venezuela. Third, it had an attractive title. Last (but not least), it was the first one we found on Google.

It is a true story narrated by journalist Ibeyise Pacheco, who allows us to follow closely the events that unfolded after the accusation of murder of the renowned psychiatrist, presidential candidate, and former rector of the Central University of Venezuela, Edmundo Chirinos, for the death of Roxana Vargas. The journalist was able to interview not only Dr. Chirinos, but also the detectives in charge of the case, as well as other people who were involved.
The story is ultimately very raw. The book narrates many details graphically, such as the things Chirinos did when he committed the murder, the coroner's report on the state of the corpse, or what he did to other patients. The narrative grabs you from the beginning, and as the book progresses, you keep wondering how it will all end. It's very interesting how the author takes you clue by clue, without letting you see what's next. You feel trapped trying to figure out the next clue they followed, and you can't stop reading. It's amazing.
It was a very interesting experience, and it was great to share thoughts and ideas with my classmates. We were reading during Spanish class, and a couple of other classes.
However, the book is not for everyone. One of our classmates didn't continue reading because she didn't like it. She was uncomfortable with the details about the murder. I guess sensitive readers won't finish the book. In spite of that, I particularly like this kind of stories; I usually see them in movies or series, but it was interesting to read.

I think that imagining that it is one more horror story makes us pass the bitter pill of reality. The truth is that this kind of thing is not always fiction; it happens, and it's scary. We have to be careful about who we trust with our safety, our lives. This story happened in MY country, and that is scary, but it is important to learn from these tragedies.
Obviously, it is not common for a doctor, someone who enjoys the trust and respect of patients and family members, to end up murdering his patients, but still, it happens. The thing is, as a book, it is incredible. There is a need for more books on investigative journalism, especially when it comes to cases involving important people. The rich and powerful tend to feel untouchable and do many bad things because they feel that no one will dare to investigate them. This was an exceptional case. I think it is a story that more people should know about. When you can, look for... Blood on the Chaise Longue.

I usually enjoy books that follow a true life story, and this one just shows the reason why. This type of books also would be easier to write summaries for, as it would feel like retelling the story.
