a Return to the Wizarding World ... this time with an Almanac

in Hive Book Club26 days ago (edited)

Though the height of my love for the Harry Potter series began around 2001, it never died away. Nor was it entirely replaced by the fantasy series that came into my life since then. As a teen and young adult I have delved into a number of fantasy realms. In my 20's, reading fiction took a bit of a back seat as I tried to navigate the struggles of life.

But, in times of stress and anxiety I very often returned to my childhood's favorite books, and especially the first four Harry Potter books narrated by the great Jim Dale (all of which you can find here.

This isn't a review of the original series. Today I want to talk about The Harry Potter Wizarding Almanac which has reignited my passion for all things Hogwarts, Order of the Phoenix, and Forbidden Forest.

Speaking of the Forbidden Forest. If you have read my book reviews before you will know that a sign of a good book is one that begins with a map. Well, this book is pretty much maps entirely! This isn't so much a literary book (though it certainly contains plenty to read) but more so a companion book for fans of the series. I bought this book having had already read the series at least once and many of the books I have read over and over again.

(I am in love again and can't help but share this book with you all)

My partner, however, was just starting out with his Harry Potter journey. Together we are reading/listening to the audiobooks narrated by Carlos Ponce (in Spanish). The only "downside" to this Almanac is that it contains a lot of spoilers. This book is not so much for newbies to the Harry Potter realm but rather a review for us super-fans to fawn over.

That being said, I totally recommend this almanac, or as it is titled in my Spanish language version "El Mundo Magico de Harry Potter" Each page has so much detail that each and every time I flip through the pages I discover something new, some aspect of the drawings or lore I hadn't noticed previously.

The author of the series worked with half a dozen of amazing artists to create this book, filling it with moments from the series, and amazing illustrations that perfectly capture the spirit of the books. These are scenes and feels that I imagined in my mind as I read and listened to the books way back when, and even to this day.

(special thanks to my partner, Jona, for helping me capture this moment and to our kitty, Paprika, for being such a lovely companion)

I feel that this book capture the essence of this world much better than the movies which were, of course, meant to be commercial successes rather than satisfy my personal desires to see the Wizarding World.
