Today I’d like to share with you a simple and effective guide on how to write a book review. These are tips that can be applied right away and are valid for any type of book. I always proceed in this way when I have to write a review.

Oggi voglio condividere con voi una guida semplice ed efficace su come scrivere la recensione di un libro. Sono consigli che si possono applicare fin da subito e che sono validi per qualunque genere di libro. Io stessa procedo sempre in questo modo quando devo scrivere una recensione.

The first thing to make clear is that a review is not a summary. Or rather, not only that! In fact, it’s important that the plot is present, so that you can understand the story.
However, to encourage someone to read the book, a simple summary is not enough. You need to add a personal touch! For example, try to express your overall thoughts on the book, or provide an accurate critique by referring to other books in the same series or the same genre (for example "it was inspired by that book..., I found it more interesting than that series...").
The structure of a review must be as repetitive as possible, so as to accustom your readers to what they will find in front of them. A skeleton could be:
- Title;
- Year of publication;
- Publisher;
- Author: name and short biography;
- Other technical data of the book: number of pages, price, ...;
- Plot of the book;
- Overall rating of the book;
- Comments on the writing style;
- Favorite quotes or passages from the book;
- Conclusion.
This outline is just an example, it's important that you can find the personal style with which to best express yourself.
La prima cosa da mettere in chiaro è che una recensione non è un riassunto. O meglio, non solo! Infatti, è importante che la trama sia presente, in modo che si capisca la storia di cui parla il libro.
Però, per invogliare una persona a leggere il libro, un riassunto semplice non basta. Bisogna aggiungere un tocco personale! Ad esempio, cerca di esprimere il tuo pensiero complessivo sul libro, oppure di fornire una critica accurata facendo riferimento ad altri libri della stessa collana o dello stesso genere (ad esempio "si è ispirato a quel libro..., l'ho trovato più interessante di quella serie...").
La struttura di una recensione deve essere il più possibile ripetitiva, in modo da abituare i tuoi lettori a cosa si troveranno di fronte. Uno scheletro potrebbe essere:
- Titolo;
- Anno di pubblicazione;
- Casa editrice;
- Autore: nome e breve biografia;
- Altri dati tecnici del libro: numero di pagine, prezzo, …;
- Trama del libro;
- Giudizio complessivo del libro;
- Commenti sullo stile di scrittura;
- Citazioni o passaggi preferiti del libro;
- Conclusione.
Questa scaletta è solo un esempio, è importante che tu riesca a trovare lo stile personale con il quale esprimere al meglio te stesso.

If you like writing reviews and would like to set up a series of book reviews, don't waste time and start thinking about the review right while you read the book!
How to do it? It's very simple. While you read, underline or highlight the most important passages of the book that capture your attention. You could also add colored post-its or bookmarks that will allow you to find the right page later.
We said that we have to write the plot of the book. However, we must be careful not to provide important previews on some important moments of the story, or on the ending (spoilers). This would take away all the magic!
When we express personal comments on the book, our reader wants to know if we liked it or not, and for which reasons. It’s very important that the conclusions understand whether you recommend the book or whether reading it was a waste of time.
Another thing you could talk about is the target audience. If a book deals with thrillers or crime, it will certainly not be suitable for a sensitive person who is easily impressed. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the broad readership!
Se ti piace scrivere recensioni e vorresti mettere in piedi una rubrica sui libri, non perdere tempo e inizia a pensare alla recensione proprio mentre leggi il libro!
Come fare? È semplicissimo. Mentre leggi, sottolinea o evidenzia i passaggi più importanti del libro che catturano la tua attenzione. Potresti anche aggiungere dei post-it colorati o dei segnalibri che ti permetteranno di trovare la pagina giusta in seguito.
Abbiamo detto che dobbiamo scrivere la trama del libro. Tuttavia, bisogna fare attenzione a non fornire anticipazioni importanti su alcuni momenti importanti della storia, o sul finale (spoilers). Questo toglierebbe tutta la magia!
Quando esprimiamo commenti personali sul libro, il nostro lettore vuole sapere se ci è piaciuto oppure no, e per quali motivi. È molto importante che dalle conclusioni si capisca se tu consigli il libro oppure se leggerlo è stata una perdita di tempo.
Un’altra cosa di cui potresti parlare è il pubblico di riferimento. Se un libro tratta di argomenti thriller o crime, sicuramente non sarà indicato per una persona sensibile che si impressiona facilmente. Cerca di metterti nei panni dell’ampio pubblico di lettori!

To do this, it is very important not to be influenced by other reviews. Do not read other reviews before writing yours! It will help you to be original and consistent.
The last piece of advice I feel like giving you is: take the time to write a good review. In fact, it’s immediately noticeable if a content is not of quality because it was written in a hurry. If you want to retain your readers, the best thing is to dedicate time to writing, trying to write with correct grammar and with logic.
Quando scrivi una recensione, è fondamentale la tua onestà intellettuale. Cerca di diffondere le tue idee con trasparenza, senza censure! Questo sarà molto apprezzato dai tuoi lettori.
Per fare questo, è molto importante non farsi influenzare dalle altre recensioni. Non leggere le altre recensioni prima di aver scritto la tua! Ti aiuterà a essere originale e coerente.
L’ultimo consiglio che mi sento di darvi è: prenditi il tempo per scrivere una bella recensione. Infatti, si nota subito se un contenuto non è di qualità perché è stato scritto di fretta. Se vuoi fidelizzare i tuoi lettori, la cosa migliore è proprio dedicare il tempo alla scrittura, cercando di scrivere con grammatica corretta e con senso logico.
