Greetings, dear members of the book community, I hope you are feeling great. Doesn't it happen to you that sometimes you want something light to read? Something fun, fast, with a bit of comedy and that makes our brain entertained... When I have this need, I always think of consuming movies of the romantic comedy genre, and in the case of books, I look for some juvenile novel, so looking for what to read these days I remembered those books I read when I was between 14 or 15 years old, and that's how I found myself again in front of Serial Hottie, a novel created by Kelly Oram.
Saludos, queridos miembros de la comunidad de libros, espero que se encuentren muy bien. ¿No les pasa que a veces quieren algo ligero para leer? Algo divertido, rápido, con un poco de comedia y que haga que nuestro cerebro se entretenga… Cuando tengo esta necesidad, siempre pienso en consumir películas del género comedia romántica, y en el caso de los libros, busco alguna novela juvenil, de manera que buscando en qué leer en estos días recordé aquellos libros que leí cuando tenía entre 14 o 15 años, y es así como nuevamente me encontré ante Serial Hottie, una novela creada por Kelly Oram.
My first impression as I read the book, is that I understood why my 15 year old self enjoyed this book. Even back then I recognized that reading it for me was a guilty pleasure, because I was quite shy about admitting that I enjoyed reading romances, plus this particular one is like reading a fanfic pulled from Wattpad.
The sypnosis is as follows: Ellie is about to start her summer, the most boring summer ever despite the fact that she's soon to turn sweet 16. What suddenly makes everything more interesting is the arrival of Seth, a guy who moves in across the street from her house and has the hobby of working out half-naked in the garage, but that's not all, because Seth starts to show an interest in Ellie that she doesn't quite believe. However, that interest makes sense when murders start happening in her town, and twisted in this fact is that they are girls who look like her. Seth and the killer begin to have many similarities, and Ellie believes that if her suspicions come true, this will be her last summer.
Mi primera impresión a medida que leía el libro, es que entendía el porqué mi yo de 15 años disfrutaba este libro. Incluso en ese entonces reconocía que la lectura del mismo para mí era un placer culposo, porque era bastante tímida respecto al hecho de admitir que disfrutaba leer romances, además que este en particular es como leer un fanfic sacado de Wattpad.
La sipnosis es la siguiente: Ellie está por iniciar su verano, el verano más aburrido de todos a pesar de que pronto va a cumplir sus dulces 16. Lo que hace que de pronto todo se vuelva más interesante es la llegada de Seth, un chico que se muda frente a su casa y tiene la afición de entrenar semidesnudo en el garaje, pero eso no es todo, porque Seth empieza a mostrar un interés en Ellie que ella no termina de creérselo. Sin embargo, ese interés cobra sentido cuando empiezan a ocurrir asesinatos en su ciudad, y retorcido en este hecho es que son chicas que se parecen a ella. Seth y el asesino empiezan a tener muchas similitudes, y Ellie cree que de cumplirse sus sospechas, ese será su último verano.
Now, I understand that when I first read it, what grabbed me was precisely the idea that there was a crime element involved, and that's something I hadn't seen before in a teen romance novel, let alone when it comes to teenagers (maybe there are more stories like that, but I admit I'm not very knowledgeable about teen novels anyway). However, the story couldn't have more stereotypical characters, and I'm surprised it didn't come from the mind of a 2010's fanfic writer, because although it seems to me that it tries to innovate with the whole serial killer thing, the characters and their conflicts don't stop being very cliché.
Ahora bien, entiendo que cuando lo leí por primera vez, lo que me atrapó fue precisamente la idea de que había un elemento de crimen de por medio, y que es algo que no había visto antes en una novela de romance juvenil, menos cuando se trata de adolescentes (tal vez hay más historias así, pero de todos modos reconozco que no soy muy conocedora de las novelas juveniles). Sin embargo, la historia no puede tener personajes más estereotípicos, y me sorprende que no haya salido de la mente de una escritora de fanfics de los 2010’s, porque aunque me parece que trata de innovar con todo el asunto de un asesino serial, los personajes y sus conflictos no dejan de ser muy clichés.
In Ellie's case, she is an unfeminine redhead who dislikes pink, makeup, and is seen by boys as just another "boy". She wears baggy clothes, is a field hockey fan and plays video games and listens to heavy rock. On the other hand, Seth is a boy, to paraphrase the author (because seriously these are not my words), "hot", handsome, trained in martial arts, boxing, and self-defense at 17, although he is also tortured by a traumatic past and lives with a crime novelist aunt, with whom he has developed a keen interest in the psychological patterns and modus operandi of criminals. Ellie's sister, Angela, is the complete opposite of her and they have a strong rivalry with each other.
En el caso de Ellie, es una pelirroja poco femenina a quién no le gusta el rosa, el maquillaje, y es vista por los chicos como un “chico” más. Viste ropa holgada, es fanática del hockey y lo prática, juega vídeo juegos y escucha rock pesado. Por otra parte, Seth es un chico, parafraseando a la autora (porque en serio estas no son mis palabras), “caliente”, guapo, entrenado en artes marciales, en boxeo, y en defensa personal a sus 17 años, aunque también está torturado por un pasado traumático y vive con una tía novelista del género policíaco y del crimen, junto a quien ha desarrollado un gran interés por los patrones psicológicos y modus operandi de los criminales. La hermana de Ellie, Angela, es todo lo opuesto a ella y entre sí tienen una rivalidad muy fuerte.
My problem with the characters is that I understand that they are fictional, but they seem very artificial, very stereotypical. There's nothing wrong with being a girl who enjoys sports, or heavy rock and who spends more time with boys, but Ellie's whole personality fits into the already very worn speech "I'm not like other girls", as if what makes her superior is to have interests considered "masculine". And as for Seth, I understand that he had a childhood marked by a traumatic event, and his interpersonal relationship skills (especially trying to conquer a girl) are not the best, in fact in real life could lead anyone to lift a restraining order, and although he has the potential to be an interesting character, I found that everything related to crime, trauma and psychological processes were portrayed in a very banal way, sometimes with very, very convenient characteristics for the story.
Mi problema con los personajes es que entiendo que sean de ficción, pero me parecen muy artificiales, muy estereotípicos. No pasa nada con ser una chica que disfruta de los deportes, o del rock pesado y que se la pase más con chicos, pero toda la personalidad de Ellie encaja en el ya muy gastado discurso “No soy como las otras chicas”, cómo si lo que la hace superior es tener intereses considerados “masculinos”. Y en cuanto Seth, comprendo que tuvo una infancia marcada por un evento traumático, y sus habilidades para relacionarse a nivel interpersonal (especialmente tratando de conquistar a una chica) no son las mejores, de hecho en la vida real podría llevar a cualquiera a levantarle una orden de alejamiento, y a pesar de que tiene potencial para ser un personaje interesante, me pareció que todo lo relacionado con el crimen, el trauma y los procesos psicológicos fueron retratados de una forma muy banal, a veces con características muy pero muy convenientes para la historia.
One thing I did enjoy very much both the first time I read it and recently, is the relationship of the sisters and how they develop a strong bond with each other. Also, although it was obvious to me on this second reading, there is a very interesting twist to the story at the end, and after all I was looking for something to entertain me, so in that the book did its job.
To answer my question as to why I read something like this, it's because I feel it's interesting to be fully into a book being a different person than the first time you encountered it; the interpretations that come out after a few rereads can be interesting. On the other hand, it made me explode a lot my nostalgia of when I was a teenager, with no major worries, and something so simple made me have fun. Finally, I don't give up hope of finding any intelligent and funny young adult novels, and there are some that I have genuinely enjoyed reading now as an adult. I thank this story for reviving my nostalgia, and I hope you guys get hooked on a fun story soon. I'll read you in an upcoming post!
Algo que sí disfruté mucho tanto la primera vez que lo leí como recientemente, es la relación de las hermanas y cómo estas desarrollan un lazo fuerte entre ellas. Además, aunque fue evidente para mí en esta segunda lectura, al final hay un giro muy interesante en la historia, y después de todo buscaba algo para entretenerme, así que en eso el libro cumplió su función.
Para responder a mi pregunta del porqué leo algo como esto, es porque siento que es interesante estar de lleno en un libro siendo una persona diferente a la primera vez que lo encontraste; las interpretaciones que salen después de unas releídas pueden ser interesantes. Por otro lado, me hizo explotar muchísimo mi nostalgia de cuando era adolescente, sin mayores preocupaciones, y algo tan sencillo me hacía divertirme. Por último, no pierdo las esperanzas en encontrar alguna novela juvenil inteligente y divertida, y hay algunas que genuinamente he disfrutado leer ahora como adulta. Le agradezco a esta historia por revivir mi nostalgia y espero que ustedes se enganchen con una historia divertida pronto. ¡Les leo en un próximo post!
