Even though my time is extremely limited lately with college, work, personal errands, I don't know how I found the time to read this trilogy in less than a month. It's not even that I read just the first book, no, I read all three in a row, no breaks. I don't know how it happened😂 Maybe a feeric cast a spell on me. But it's too much information and entanglements, so I'll dedicate a review for each one.
It's a trilogy that's all over the place in the reading community. Most readers have heard its name, and opinions abound about this story. And if a river sounds, it's because it carries stones. So I was in the need, almost obligation, to at least read the first chapter of this trilogy... Spoiler: I couldn't stop until I finished. So here I begin my review of Holly Black's trilogy, The Cruel Prince👑
A pesar de que últimamente mi tiempo está extremadamente limitado con la universidad, trabajo, diligencias personales, no sé cómo encontré el tiempo para leer esta trilogía en menos de un mes. Ni siquiera es que me leí solo el primer libro, no, me leí los tres de forma consecutiva, sin descansos. No sé cómo sucedió😂 Quizás un feérico me hechizó. Pero es demasiada información y enredos, así que dedicaré una reseña para cada uno.
Es una trilogía que está en todos lados de la comunidad lectora. La mayoría de los lectores han escuchado su nombre, y abundan las opiniones sobre esta historia. Y si un río suena, es porque piedras lleva. Así que estaba en la necesidad, casi obligación, de al menos leer el primer capítulo de esta trilogía… Spoiler: no pude detenerme hasta terminar. Así que aquí comienzo mi opinión sobre la trilogía Los Habitantes del Aire de Holly Black, con el primer libro, El Príncipe Cruel👑
Jude Duarte is a young human girl who, along with her sisters, was forced to live in the world of Elfhame, after the tragic death of her parents. A place full of fairies of all kinds, who abhor mortals; despite these merciless creatures, who see Jude as an intruder, she must grow up and learn to survive there, as there is no other option. And there comes a time when she cannot even imagine returning to the mortal world, dreaming of earning a place in the king's court.
Along the way, she crosses paths with Prince Cardan, the youngest member of the royal family. A rebel without a cause, cruel, and who doesn't hesitate to publicly express his hatred for everyone, mainly Jude and her sister. Cardan and his friends enjoy humiliating Jude, they would never hesitate if they had the opportunity to kill her, the only thing that keeps her alive is the influence of her protector, Madoc. For this reason, our protagonist is forced to learn to manage among the intrigues of the court, and seek any means that will allow her to have an advantage over them all.
But in a world full of magic, you can't expect everything to be as it seems. And much less that everything will be easy, and without deception. Especially when you face beings who cannot lie, immortals who know the power of the word and use it against everyone. Jude will have to make alliances, she will win powerful enemies, she will become an important piece in this chess game, but will she be able to checkmate? Or will her ambition end up devouring her?
Resumen (sin spoilers) Jude Duarte es una joven humana que, junto a sus hermanas, fue obligada a vivir en el mundo de Elfhame, luego de la trágica muerte de sus padres. Un lugar de lleno de hadas de todo tipo, que aborrecen a los mortales; a pesar de estas criaturas despiadadas, que ven a Jude como una intrusa, ella debe crecer y aprender a sobrevivir allí, dado que no hay otra opción. Y llega un punto en que ni puede imaginarse volver al mundo mortal, soñando con ganar un lugar en la corte del rey.
En ese camino, se cruza con el príncipe Cardan, el integrante más joven de la familia real. Un rebelde sin causa, cruel, y que no duda en expresar públicamente su odio por todos, principalmente por Jude, y su hermana. Cardan y sus amigos disfrutan humillar a Jude, jamás dudarían si tuvieran la oportunidad de asesinarla, lo único que la mantiene viva es la influencia de su protector, Madoc. Por esta razón, nuestra protagonista se ve obligada a aprender a manejarse entre las intrigas de la corte, y buscar cualquier medio que le permita tener una ventaja sobre todos ellos.
Pero en un mundo lleno de magia, no puedes esperar que todo sea lo que parece. Y mucho menos que todo sea fácil, y sin engaños. Especialmente, cuando te enfrentas con seres que no pueden mentir, inmortales que conocen el poder de la palabra y la usan en contra de todos. Jude deberá realizar alianzas, se ganará enemigos poderosos, se convertirá en una pieza importante de este juego de ajedrez, ¿pero podrá hacer el jaque mate? ¿O su ambición la terminará devorando?
Jude Duarte. She is a strong and determined protagonist. She uses her “weaknesses” to strengthen, she doesn't let them limit her in a world where everything wants to kill her. I like her desire to survive and excel in Elfhame, despite being seen as an inferior being. She doesn't give up, and uses fear as her source of motivation. She's not the typical naive protagonist, she's not perfect, but she's always trying to improve. She is brave, strategic, and very manipulative. We see her evolve from a humiliated young mortal, to a strategist with the ability to play her own cards in intricate politics. She is not sweet, nor submissive, she is totally ambitious and desires power, and I like her for that🤭
Cardan Greenbriar. At first he seems like the typical cruel, spoiled, self-centered prince. I actually thought he was the antagonist, due to his arrogant attitude and disdain for Jude. It was too enemies to expect it to turn into a romance...still I don't think they'll get there, but the attempt was made😂 However, we know that many of these characters are like that because of past wounds. And yes, his cruelty is real, it's not just a “disguise” of the character, he is cruel, don't be fooled; but he also shows moments of vulnerability, and can even be charismatic if he puts his mind to it.
Personajes Jude Duarte. Es una protagonista fuerte y determinada. Utiliza sus “debilidades” para fortalecer, no permite que ellas la limiten en un mundo donde todo quiere asesinarla. Me gusta su deseo de sobrevivir y destacar en Elfhame, a pesar de que la vean como un ser inferior. No se da por vencida, y utiliza el miedo como su fuente de motivación. No es la típica protagonista ingenua, no es perfecta, pero siempre está intentando mejorar. Es valiente, estratégica, y muy manipuladora. La vemos evolucionar de una joven mortal humillada, a una estratega con la capacidad de jugar sus propias cartas en la intrincada política. No es dulce, ni sumisa, es totalmente ambiciosa y desea el poder, y a mí me gusta por eso🤭
Cardan Greenbriar. Al principio parece el típico príncipe cruel, mimado y egocéntrico. De hecho, pensé que él era el antagonista, debido a su actitud arrogante y su desprecio por Jude. Era muy enemies para esperar que se convirtiera en un romance… igual no creo que lleguen allí, pero se hizo el intento😂 Sin embargo, sabemos que muchos de estos personajes son así por heridas del pasado. Y sí, su crueldad es real, no es solo un “disfraz” del personaje, es cruel, no se dejen engañar; pero también muestra momentos de vulnerabilidad, y hasta puede ser carismático si se lo propone.
Madoc. He's the most complex character in the story. I think he's one of my favorite characters because of duality. He is Elfhame's war general, and the protector of Jude and her sisters (for reasons I'll keep secret🤫). He is the chief representative of the brutality of this world. He raised Jude, and instilled in him his strategist and survivalist mentality. And while we know he is fond of his adopted daughter, his sense of power and politics is greater.
Taryn and Vivi. They are secondary characters, but important to the development of the plot. All of them generate mixed feelings for me. Taryn is Jude's twin sister, with the naive personality common to many protagonists; her acceptance of the feeric world was one of submission and internalization of roles. That passive attitude creates conflict for Jude, and for me as well. Vivi, the older sister, strikes me as a selfish and hypocritical character, plain and simple. I recognize that the situation was complex, and everyone found their own way to adapt, but I don't like Vivi's attitude. However, I admit that she is loyal to Jude, and helps her out of various problems.
Madoc. Es el personaje más complejo de la historia. Creo que es uno de mis personajes favoritos debido a dualidad. Es el general de guerra de Elfhame, y el protector de Jude y sus hermanas (por razones que guardaré en secreto🤫). Es el representante principal de la brutalidad de este mundo. Crió a Jude, y le inculcó su mentalidad estratega y de supervivencia. Y aunque conocemos que le tiene aprecio a su hija adoptiva, su sentido de poder y política es mayor.
Taryn y Vivi. Son personajes secundarios, pero importantes para el desarrollo de la trama. Todos ellos me generan sentimientos encontrados. Taryn es la hermana gemela de Jude, con la personalidad ingenua común de muchas protagonistas; su aceptación del mundo feerico fue de sumisión e interiorización de los roles. Esa actitud pasiva le genera conflictos a Jude, y a mí también. Vivi, la hermana mayor, me parece un personaje egoísta e hipócrita, así de simple. Reconozco que la situación era compleja, y cada quien buscó su manera de adaptarse, pero la actitud de Vivi no me gusta. Sin embargo, admito que es leal a Jude, y la ayuda a salir de varios problemas.
Power and Ambition.
I think this is the key plot point. Jude is not a damsel in distress who just wants to survive in Elfhame; she wants to control it. She has a thirst for revenge, she wants to bring down all those who have humiliated her over the last decade. That ambition gets her into trouble, to take risks in the political world of Elfhame. And it wasn't the context that led her to it, she got herself into it. This novel shows us that power is not given away, but taken, and that you can still fall victim to its weight.
Survival in a hostile world.
What does it really mean to remain in a world that doesn't want you there? In Elfhame, weakness is punished, and nothing weaker than a mortal. Jude and Taryn show us two ways of coping (though I suspect both have PTSD). Jude fights with all her might, and Taryn prefers to go unnoticed. But since the main protagonist is Jude, don't expect a cute fairy tale story; the narrative is about adaptation through ferocity, deception, and the conversion of a mortal to a ruthless being.
Temas Principales Poder y Ambición.
Creo que es el punto clave de la trama. Jude no es una damisela en peligro que solo quiere sobrevivir en Elfhame; ella quiere controlarlo. Tiene sed de venganza, quiere doblegar a todos aquellos que la han humillado en la última década. Esa ambición la mete en problemas, a tomar riesgos en el mundo político de Elfhame. Y no fue que el contexto la llevó a eso, ella se metió solita. Esta novela nos muestra que el poder no se regala, sino que se toma, y que, aún así, puedes ser víctima de su peso.
Supervivencia en un mundo hostil.
¿Qué significa realmente permanecer en un mundo que no te quiere allí? En Elfhame la debilidad se castiga, y nada más débil que un mortal. Jude y Taryn nos demuestran dos formas de adaptación (aunque sospecho que ambas tienen un estrés postraumático). Jude lucha con todas sus fuerzas, y Taryn prefiere pasar desapercibida. Pero como la protagonista principal es Jude, no esperen una historia linda de cuento de hadas; la narración es acerca de una adaptación a base de ferocidad, engaños, y la conversión de un mortal a un ser despiadado.
Enemies to lovers?
The most talked about aspect within the reading community is the romance between Jude and Cardan. It's interesting that there's so much talk... about something that isn't there🤭 It's not a romance story. Really, don't start reading it expecting that. These two hate each other, wish each other dead, and there is no transition to romance. But yes, from hate to love can be only one step. So their dynamic of rivalry and contempt, hides a little attraction, but the ambiguous morality hides this. I understand that this is also much criticized, but I think it is because people expect to read a romantasy (romance and fantasy), and it is a couple that develops in a bloody and violent context. Politics and power is the main thing, then survival, and fourth or fifth place we could put a possible romance.
¿Enemies to lovers?
El aspecto que más se comenta dentro de la comunidad lectora es el romance entre Jude y Cardan. Es interesante que se hable tanto... de algo que no está ahí🤭 No es una historia romántica. De verdad, no lo comiencen a leer esperando eso. Estos dos se odian, desean la muerte del otro, y no hay transición al romance. Pero sí, del odio al amor puede haber solo un paso. Así que su dinámica de rivalidad y desprecio, esconde una pequeña atracción, pero la moralidad ambigua esconde esto. Entiendo que esto también es muy criticado, pero creo que se debe a que las personas esperan leer un romantasy (romance y fantasía), y es una pareja que se desarrolla en un contexto sangriento y violento. La política y el poder es lo principal, luego la supervivencia, y de cuarto o quinto lugar podríamos colocar un posible romance.
Belonging and Betrayal.
The story explores the need for human beings to find a place of their own and how, at various times, we break ourselves to fit in. Jude's quest for power is a way to find validation in a world that despises her.
And, likewise, betrayal reigns in each character's life course. There are many plot twists, alliances constantly shift, and even those you thought were enemies become allies, and there is betrayal in those who have always stood by you. Which makes The Cruel Prince more than a fantasy story; it's a raw and ambiguous plot, and no spell can hide that.
Pertenencia y Traición.
La historia explora la necesidad de los seres humanos de encontrar un lugar propio y cómo, en varias ocasiones, nos rompemos a nosotros mismos para encajar. Esa búsqueda de poder de Jude es una manera de encontrar validación en un mundo que la desprecia.
Y, así mismo, la traición reina en el curso de vida de cada personaje. Hay muchos giros de trama, las alianzas cambian constantemente, e incluso los que pensabas que eran enemigos se convierten en aliados, y hay traición en aquellos que siempre te han acompañado. Lo que hace que El Príncipe Cruel sea más que una historia de fantasía; es una trama cruda y ambigua, y ningún hechizo puede esconder eso.
I have already read other novels by Holly Black and I have no complaints about her. Some I have liked more than others, but it is a matter of the content of the plot, but I like her writing style. She manages to immerse the reader in Jude's mind, and we understand his ambitions and evolution as a character. Likewise, his narrative style allows us to feel immersed in that hostile world, with short chapters that keep us in tension but help us pause. The story is balanced between action and political intrigue, but there are not so many romantic details. From the start, the plot moves quickly, introducing us right into the conflict, with a steady pace that keeps us interested. Black plays with plot twists, heightening the reader's anticipation, but without it feeling forced.
Elfhame feels real, alive, and dangerous. Beautiful, and deadly dark. The scenes feel tangible, thanks to the well-described details, but without going into elongated exaggerations of them. Just enough to make us imagine the scene.
Narración Ya he leído otras novelas de Holly Black y no tengo quejas de ella. Algunas me han gustado más que otras, pero ya es cuestión del contenido de la trama, pero su curso de escritura me gusta. Logra que el lector se sumerja en la mente de Jude, y comprendamos sus ambiciones y evolución como personaje. Así mismo, su estilo narrativo nos permite sentirnos inmersos en ese mundo hostil, con capítulos cortos que nos mantiene en tensión pero nos ayuda a hacer pausas. La historia está equilibrada entre la acción y la intriga política, pero no hay tantos detalles románticos. Desde el inicio, la trama avanza con rapidez, introduciendonos directo al conflicto, con un ritmo constante que mantiene el interés. Black juega con los giros argumentales, aumentando la expectativa del lector, pero sin que se sienta forzado.
Elfhame se siente real, vivo, y peligroso. Hermoso, y mortalmente oscuro. Las escenas se sienten tangibles, gracias a los detalles bien descritos, pero sin entrar en exageraciones alargadas de los mismos. Solo lo justo y necesario para lograr imaginarnos la escena.
There are no clear heroes or villains in this story, even Jude herself can be taken as a villain on several occasions. The characters have selfish motivations, and are willing to do anything to fulfill their ambitions. And I personally like that dark tone. Although it's not a story for everyone, but if you enjoy complex characters, betrayals and strategies, you might like it😌 What I can say for sure is that it defies the rules of traditional fairy tales✨
En esta historia no hay héroes ni villanos claros, incluso la misma Jude puede ser tomada como villana en varias ocasiones. Los personajes tienen motivaciones egoístas, y están dispuestos a realizar cualquier cosa para cumplir sus ambiciones. Y a mí, personalmente, me gusta ese tono oscuro. Aunque no es una historia para todos, pero si disfrutas de personajes complejos, traiciones y estrategias, puede que te guste😌 Lo que sí puedo asegurar es que desafía las reglas de los cuentos de hadas tradicionales✨

Ok, he visto este libro literalmente en todas partes y no sé porqué lo sigo ignorando 😅. Cada vez que leo una reseña me pica la curiosidad, quizá ya es momento de leerlo (o bueno, cuando la universidad se digne a soltarme)
Quizás por la misma razón que yo también los estaba ignorando... El hecho de que todos lo colocan como el top del romance. Pero no amiga, no lo es🤭😌 Así que le podrías dar una oportunidad cuando tengan un tiempo libre y quieras descansar✨
