Hello, #hivebookclub #community! The Guadalajara International Book Fair took place in the first few days of December 2024. It is the second largest in the world and a dream come true for everyone involved in the Spanish-language literary universe. And I, almost miraculously, was able to attend as a guest, and I want to share my experience with you.
First Time Outside of Cuba
Yes, it was my first time. As everyone knows, leaving Cuba is not easy. Even though I was invited to this prestigious fair, the paperwork and various authorization processes were not easy to obtain. This delayed several important processes, such as getting the official passport, tickets, and more. Until the last minute, I thought I wouldn't make it.
Finally, everything fell into place, and then came the other anxiety: I've never been outside of Cuba! I've never been on a plane, I'm terrified of them, and now I have to board three planes to get there and three to return! I have no idea how customs works! And the worst part: I don't have a single penny!!!
Thanks to friends who advised and guided me through the process, everything went better than I expected. The Havana-Mérida flight scared me, but I always sat by the window and saw something magical: a meteorite ☄️!!! Due to the relative motion, it didn't look like it was falling but rather frozen in time next to the plane's wing. It was a once-in-a-lifetime event, like everything on this trip.
Then came Mérida-Mexico City and from there to Guadalajara. It was about 18 hours of travel between flights and waiting at airports. Airports gave me my first taste of capitalism. And it was nothing like I expected.
The Fair
The Guadalajara Book Fair is HUGE. There's no other word for it. It feels like the entire part of the city is dedicated to it. Around the Guadalajara EXPO, a large space that resembles a circus tent but made of steel, there are several hotels. That's where we stayed. The place always has the perfect temperature, whether it's 11 Celsius degrees or 29 outside (yes, the temperature in Guadalajara is that variable). The entire space is very well planned. The lines to enter are very orderly. Inside, the information desk, restrooms, infirmary, and rest area are all well-marked.
The restaurants and cafes are slightly elevated to save space and not interrupt the flow of the crowd, while also offering a view of the people and movement below. The rest area is a spacious zone with carpets, chairs, loungers, and all kinds of poufs where you can rest, eat, read, or do whatever you want. From this central point, the Fair is divided into four sections.
The Spaces
Hidden from the crowd is the writers' room, which I visited. I assume there are others. At this fair, authors are celebrities, and sometimes they need a break. A secluded spot to have some coffee, chat, and basically do some networking. There are professional halls where, every 20 minutes, like clockwork, there are talks about the inner workings of the book industry. Editors, academic authors, marketing professionals... everyone has their place there. It's the spot for serious networking.
Opposite this, on the other side of the central area, were halls more focused on the public. That's where the big-name authors were, sometimes with up to 200 people, talking, signing books, and more. From the outside, it looked like BTS had just arrived from Korea, given the noise and excitement for the book celebrities.
Then there's the area for national publishers, marked with single-letter aisles (e.g., A1, A2...) and, oh my, the sheer volume of books produced in Mexico. What wonders I saw there, and I didn't have a single penny to buy anything. Lastly, opposite that, were the international publishers, marked with double letters (AA1). There was representation from all over the world. Latin America, Asia, Europe, Africa... the entire world was there.

Hola, #hivebookclub #community! La Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara se celebró los primeros días de diciembre de 2024. Es la segunda más grande del mundo y un sueño hecho realidad para todos los que se dedican al universo literario en español. Y yo, podríamos decir que casi milagrosamente, pude asistir como invitada, y quiero contarles mi experiencia.
Primera vez fuera de Cuba
Sí, fue mi primera vez. Como todo el mundo sabe, salir de Cuba no es sencillo. Con todo y estar invitada a esta feria tan prestigiosa, el papeleo y lo diversos veles de autorización no fueron fáciles de obtener. Eso atrasó varios procesos importantes, como la obtención del pasaporte oficial, los boletos y demás. Hasta último minuto pensé que no lo lograría.
Finalmente, todo fluyó, y entonces llegó la otra ansiedad: nunca he estado fuera de Cuba! Nunca he montado avión, les tengo pánico, y ahora debo subirme a tres de ida y tres de regreso! No tengo la menor idea de cómo funciona una aduana! Y la peor: no tengo un centavo!!!
Gracias a amigos que me aconsejaron y guiaron durante el proceso, todo fluyó mejor de lo que creí. El vuelo Habana-Mérida me dio miedo, pero siempremetoó ventanilla y pude ver algo mágico: un meteorito ☄️!!! Producto del movimiento relativo, no se veía como si estuviera cayendo, sino como paralizado en el tempo al lado del ala del avión. Fue un evento de una vez en la vida, como todo en este viaje.
Luego tocó Mérida-Ciudad de México y de ahí, a Guadalajara. Fueron unas 18 horas de viaje entre aviones y esperas en aeropuertos. Aeropuertos que me dieron una primera probada de lo que era el capitalismo. Y nada que ver.
La Feria
La Feria del Libro de Guadalajara es ENORME. No hay otra palabra. Parece como si toda esa parte de la ciudad se pusiera en función de ello. Alrededor del Guadalajara EXPO, un gran espacio que asemeja un carpa de circo, pero de acero, hay varios hoteles. Ahí estábamos. El lugar tiene siempre la temperatura correcta, y sea que afuera haga 11 grados Celsius que 29 (sí, la temperatura en Guadalajara es así de cambiante). Todo el espacio está muy bien planificado. Las filas para entrar, muy ordenadas. Dentro, el espacio de Información, los baños, la enfermería, el área de descanso, todo muy bien señalizado.
Los restaurantes y cafés quedan un poco por encima del resto, para ahorrar espacio y no interrumpir el movimiento de la multitud, además de ganar en vista de las personas y el movimiento justo debajo. El área de descanso es un amplio espacio con una alfombra, sillas, tumbonas y puffs de todo tipo, donde puedes descansar, comer, leer, lo que quieras. A partir de ese punto central, la Feria se divide en cuatro.
Los espacios
Escondidas de la multitud, la sala de los escritores, que yo visiteé. Asumo que habrá otras. En esta feria, los autores son celebridades, y a veces necesitan un descanso. Un sitio aislado donde tomar algo de café, conversar y básicamente hacer algo de lobby.
Están los salones profesionales, donde cada 20 minutos, funcionando como un reloj suizo, hay una charla sobre el funcionamiento interno de la industria del libro. Editores, autores académicos, marketing... Todos tienen su sitio allí. Es el sitio para el networking duro.
Opuesto a esto, del otro lado del área central, estaban salones más enfocados en el público. Allí estaban los autores importantes, a veces hasta con 200 personas, hablando, firmando libros y demás. Desde fuera, parecía que BTS acabara de llegar de Korea, así era el ruido y el entusiasmo por las celebridades del libro.
Luego está el área de editoriales nacionales, señalizada con pasillos de una sola letra (ejemplo: A1, A2...) y madre mía que manera de producirse libros en México. Qué maravillas vi allí, y yo sin un centavo para comprar nada. Por último, opuestas, las editoriales internacionales, señalizadas con letras dobles (AA1). Había representación de todo el mundo. Latinoamérica, Asia, Europa, África... El mundo entero estaba allí.
Y bueno, este post ya está tan largo como la Feria. Voy a parar aquí. Mañana sin falta les traeré la segunda parte, con la historia de nuestras presentaciones, lecturas, salidas, cómo así me muero de una alergia y mucho más.

Amo las ferias de libros, son un espacio ideal para los apasionados de la lectura y más si se tiene una experiencia tan grata y enriquecedora como la tuya. Estos espacios son muy necesarios para conectarse con los autores y el publico lector, ahí te das cuenta que los libros nunca pasan de moda. Ya quiero leer la segunda parte de esta aventura 🤗
