POV: You read a lot of romance books growing up.

in Hive Book Club2 years ago

My earliest memory of reading was in primary school, I was either 6 or 7. The books I read were simple fiction aimed at instilling moral lessons in children within my age. There was a lot of talk about working hard, obeying your parents and avoiding promiscuity. As I grew older, my tolerance for these kinds of books reduced and I found myself reading more complex books. When I was 15, I discovered Wattpad, it's an app with all sorts of books for free. At this point, I had finished my final secondary school examinations and was waiting for my graduation so I had a lot of free time. My personal preference was romance so it made sense that those were the only kinds of books I read. One thing about literature is that no matter how little, it shapes your mindset and reasoning.

As a 15 year old reading only books about love, where a boy is in angst professing his undying love and devotion for a girl. Most of the stories were set in high school. With time, I was obsessed with this plot and wanted the exact same thing for myself. I wanted a boyfriend who would give me gifts, plant little kisses on my face, hold my hands and tell anybody who messes with me to fuck off or he would kill them. I wanted my boyfriend to say the same exact things to me, those lines that made me blush non stop when I read them. Finally, I got myself a boyfriend and most of our problems were due to the fact that he wasn't acting like my fictional boyfriends. There were certain times I would say something I read in a book and gauge his choice of words or reaction. A lot of times, he didn't respond how I wanted and I can not explain in words how it pissed me off. It made no sense that I expected those things from him, especially when he didn't read books like that or anyone at all. If I wasn't reading those books, I would be completely clueless too. Unfortunately, I was a child and quite foolish so I was a pain in his ass, always bugging him to read these books. It's so interesting because he was really sweet and a wonderful boyfriend. But it wasn't satisfactory and it didn't help that I kept reading those books. With time I learnt that the fictional characters are not real and just a figment of someone else's imaginations.

If you grew up watching movies or reading books with sex scenes then you can understand the false perception and interpretation of sex I experienced. I read a lot of books with explicit content and it raised my expectation of sex so high. The way these books described sex was truly dramatic but highly pleasurable. The women in these books had multiple orgasms from fingering, penetration and even kisses sometimes. Thinking of it now, it's hilarious the way these things were described.

"As soon as she came out of the shower, my eyes traveled down her body with the droplets of water causing her porcelain skin to shine under the night's glow. I felt my member come to full length wanting to break free from the restraints of my briefs. She looks up and we lock eyes. I catch her tightening her legs together and I catch a whiff of her arousal. I walk up to her like a lion moving towards its prey. As soon as I get close enough, I pull her closer and press her to my painful throbbing dick. ``See what you do to me, '' I whisper into her ears. Are you ready to take this pipe baby girl?". My hand travels to cup her breasts and her nipples are hard like diamonds. My other hand goes down to her core and my God she's so drenched in all that pussy juice. That is all it took me to lose control and I take her to the bed. Finally, I free my member that is already as hard as steel and ram it into her tight little pussy".

If you read these kind of books, your expectation of sex was ridiculously high. I'm sure you expected to be filled with pleasure rather than pain the first few times and have orgasms that make your legs shake uncontrollably for seconds. Let's all blame these writers for setting us up for great disappointment.

Thank You For Reading!

You gave an apt description of what romance books are. Personally, I have an aversion for them. Rarely do I ever pick up any to read.

The description of each scenes almost never match reality. Consuming too much of them without noting the difference between the author's imagination and reality can sometimes be harmful.

Thank you for stopping by @cheeamaka. I always find them comforting nevertheless. I'm used to the disappointments that comes with reality.

It's the way I was laughing and cursing at the same time cause I can totally relate to all this shit. All the Cinderella tales and lots more other romantic novels swept me off my feet but the day I came to back to the real world was the day I wanted to give sex a try, goodness gracious that shit hurts sometimes. Haha. Kisses don't get me wet except it's prolonged and hot. These writers had ways of getting into our heads. Lol

I still read these romance once in a while but I prefer those Greek tragedies more. Read any?

Exactly, you relate perfectly. Mine was totally opposite to what I had in my head.

Recommend any?

Sophocles' Oedipus Rex

Antigone Oedipus the king Electra

Electra and other plays

All these are authored by Sophocles the great Greek tragedian. Read any of Shakespeare's?

Thank you. I would try one. Hopefully it won't be too boring.
