In my introductory Post, I talked about being a lover of books. So today, I have a book review. The last time I read fantasy was in 2019/20 when I was still in my Wattpad era (the OGs know what I'm talking about). Reading about vampires and werewolves used to be my favorite thing to do. I outgrew the stories there so I deleted the app. This brought my love for fantasy to a halt until two weeks ago when I went on Twitter to complain about my reading slump and one of my followers recommended a book for me. I read the synopsis online, downloaded a copy of it, and got right into it. With its lyrical writing style and poignant storytelling, The Invisible Life of Addie Larue was a five-star read and one of the best books I've ever read.
Imagine a life where you cannot leave a mark. Imagine living life without leaving behind memories in the minds of people you meet.
As human beings, one thing we all desire is to be remembered and leave behind a legacy that would live on after we are gone. We spend time with our friends and loved ones to preserve memories. Everybody would die one day, it is what you leave behind that proves that you lived.
Addie Larue a young girl with a wild mind doesn't want the traditional regular life; getting married, having children, and being stuck in her small town for the rest of her life. She knows there's much more to see and do in the world. She was warned to never pray to the gods of the dark. Desperate for an intervention to prevent her from getting married to a man as old as her father, helpless Addie runs into the woods to pray. She doesn't realize the setting of the sun and that darkness has fallen already. This is how she summoned the god of the dark and made a deal with him. Little did she know that in exchange for answers to her prayers, there was a curse attached. From that moment, she is forgotten by everyone she knows. Whenever she meets somebody new, as soon as a door is shut between them, every memory of her is wiped from their minds. After living like a ghost for 300 years, she meets a man in a bookstore who remembers her. He doesn't forget her. Why is he the first person in centuries to remember her? What's different about him?
I have to say this novel has raised the bar so high. Character Development? Check. Plot? Check. Writing style? Checkity-check. Can a book be any more perfect? From the synopsis, I knew I would enjoy the story but nothing prepared me for all the emotions I felt reading it. One thing about me is that if a book makes me feel things, if a book can make me shed tears, then it's untouchable. Right from the beginning I was hooked and attached to Addie in a way that I haven't been with any fictional character before. When Henry was introduced, I just wanted to give him a very tight hug. The emotional connection I felt with the characters is surreal. It's been two weeks since I read it and I still think about them and feel sad. It's not a tragic book, bittersweet describes the feeling better.
I'm trying so hard to write this review without spoilers so I don't ruin the experience for you when you read it. As a book lover, there are certain books you read and you just know you will never forget about it. You know in your heart you'll spend days thinking about it. This book right here is one of those, a masterpiece truly. It's been so long a story kept me up at night. It was a page-turner as I was fully immersed in the captivating and thrilling plot. The suspense too, amazing.
Book Themes
The central themes in this book include the human desire to leave behind a mark, loneliness, longing for love, and acceptance. The time setting spans centuries from the 1600s till the French Revolution, world wars, the cold war, and the 2000s. The place setting travels from France to Italy, London and America. It is historical fiction and young adult fantasy. The novel is narrated in a third-person point of view and spans dual timelines, then and now. It has a lot of art references so if it's something that you are interested in, you'll enjoy it.
I tried my best to tell you how good this book is but I believe it can only be felt. Not to toot my horn but I've been applauded for my great recommendations a good number of times so do yourself a favor and pick this up.
Thank You For Reading!

There are a few WP lovers here. I stopped reading them since last year though I also tried authoring something over there. I guess, vampire and werewolves weren't my genre/thing. By the way, it would be nice if you could source the cover of the book that you read. If you have a copy, you could simply take a picture of it. Even if the graphic is something that you make, the book cover has to be obtained from somewhere else, right?
Cheers and looking forward to read more of your book reviews!
Thank you. I hope to be active here in this community. I designed my images with canva and I took the book cover from goodreads.
I have edited the post and indicated the source. Thank you for your advise and for reading my post.
This read sounds fantastic; I instantly picked up my phone and started to search to see whether I could find it on one of my audiobook apps; wasn't to be, but will need to keep an eye out for it.
