Agatha Christie is back
They say that attachment to material possessions is unhealthy; however, when they hold sentimental value, it's inevitable to feel it.
Let me tell you my story. Since I was a little girl, my mother instilled in me the habit of reading. From as far back as I can remember, I've always been surrounded by books. My mother is an educator, so it couldn't have been any different. Reading became a deeply ingrained habit in my life. When I had my own house, I replicated that "hoarding" behavior and started filling it with books everywhere. I had boxes and boxes of them: academic, literary, scientific, storybooks— a little bit of everything. My husband suffered seeing all those boxes, insisting that I should donate them since we didn't have enough space, and they were gathering dust. However, I refused to even consider it. Those books were my treasure; they encompassed my academic, professional, and intimate history.
Unfortunately, one day, during one of the many rainy days in my city, a strong storm hit us, and many houses, including mine, got flooded. I lost many things, some more valuable than others, but only two losses hurt me deeply: my laminated wooden floor and my boxes of books. Only a few books were saved from the damage; the rest were completely destroyed. I remember asking my husband to rescue the most important box of all, which contained my complete collection of Agatha Christie's books and a copy of The Count of Monte Cristo, which holds immeasurable value to me due to the history behind it. Thus, a part of that treasure was saved.

Déjenme contarles mi historia. Desde muy niña, mi madre me inculcó el hábito de la lectura. Desde que tengo uso de razón, siempre estuve rodeada de libros, mi mamá es educadora, no podía ser distinto. Leer se convirtió en un hábito arraigado en mi vida. Cuando tuve mi propia casa, repliqué esa conducta "acaparadora" y comencé a llenarla de libros por doquier. Tenía cajas y cajas de ellos: académicos, literarios, científicos, de historias; un poco de todo. Mi esposo sufría al ver aquella cantidad de cajas, me insistía en que los donara, ya que no teníamos suficiente espacio y además acumulaban polvo. Sin embargo, me negaba siquiera a considerarlo. Aquellos libros eran mi tesoro, en ellos se resumía mi historia universitaria, profesional e íntima.
Desafortunadamente, un día, de los muchos días lluviosos en mi ciudad, una fuerte tormenta nos azotó, y muchas casas, incluyendo la mía, se inundaron. Perdí muchas cosas, algunas más valiosas que otras, pero solo dos pérdidas me dolieron en el alma: mi piso de madera laminada y mis cajas de libros. Solo unos pocos libros se salvaron del deterioro, los demás quedaron completamente destruidos. Recuerdo haberle pedido a mi esposo que rescatara la caja más importante de todas, la que contenía mi colección completa de Agatha Christie y un ejemplar del "Conde de Montecristo", cuyo valor es incalculable para mí debido a la historia que lo precede. De esta manera, una parte de ese tesoro quedó a salvo.
Shortly after, I made it my mission to rescue many of those books in digital format, and now they accompany me wherever I go. However, I must be honest, the feeling and satisfaction of reading a physical book cannot be compared to anything, not even technology, no matter how much of a fan I am. I still feel a strong attachment to physical books and those that I had left, I would flip through them from time to time with the same passion as always.
However, now that I have moved to another country, many things were left on the other side of the world, including my beloved books. It was inevitable to leave them behind; there's only so much life that can fit into a couple of suitcases. Let's say it's a longing I carry within me.
Fortunately, I have the best companion and accomplice in my husband. He always goes above and beyond to make me smile and ease my nostalgia. A few days ago, he said with a smile on his face, "I have a surprise for you". Obviously, I had no idea what it was, but it turned out to be a wonderful surprise: Agatha Christie's books.

Poco después, me propuse rescatar muchas de esas bibliografías en formato digital, y ahora me acompañan a donde quiera que vaya. Sin embargo, debo ser honesta, la sensación y satisfacción de leer un libro físico no se compara con nada, ni siquiera la tecnología lo iguala por mucho que sea una fanática de ella. Sigo sintiendo un gran apego por los libros físicos y aquellos que me quedaron, los hojeaba de vez en cuando con la misma pasión de siempre.
No obstante, ahora que me mudé a otro país, muchas cosas quedaron al otro lado del charco, incluyendo mis amados libros. Fue inevitable dejarlos, no cabe tanta vida en un par de maletas. Digamos que es un guayabo que llevo dentro de mí.
Afortunadamente, tengo al mejor compañero y cómplice del mundo en mi esposo. Siempre hace todo lo posible por arrancarme una sonrisa y apaciguar mi nostalgia. Hace unos días, me dijo con una sonrisa en el rostro: "Te tengo una sorpresa". Obviamente, no tenía idea de qué se trataba, pero resultó ser una sorpresa maravillosa: libros de Agatha Christie.
In this new city, I have noticed a deeply rooted culture of reading. I've seen it in my children's school and everywhere I go. People here read a lot, especially physical books. Perhaps for that very reason, there are many places where people donate or exchange their books once they have finished reading them.
Thanks to that generosity, I now own 12 Agatha Christie works spread across 6 books. Three of them belong to the "Great Masters of Crime and Mystery" collection, including titles such as "Murder is Easy," "Three Blind Mice," "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," "Towards Zero," "Taken at the Flood," "Five Little Pigs," "The Boomerang Clue," "The Listerdale Mystery," and "Curtain." The other 3 books are "Death on the Nile," "Passenger to Frankfurt," and "The Mysterious Mr. Quin," all part of the "Golden Library Selections."

En esta nueva ciudad, he notado que existe una cultura muy arraigada en la lectura. Lo he visto en el colegio de mis hijos y en todos los lugares que visito. Aquí se lee muchísimo, especialmente libros físicos. Tal vez por esa misma razón, existen muchos lugares donde las personas, una vez que terminan de leer sus libros, los donan o los intercambian.
Gracias a esa generosidad, ahora poseo 12 obras de Agatha Christie distribuidas en 6 ejemplares. Tres de ellos pertenecen a la colección "Grandes Maestros del Crimen y el Misterio", que incluye títulos como "Matar es fácil", "Tres ratones ciegos", "La muerte visita al dentista", "Hacia cero", "Pleamares de la vida", "Cinco cerditos", "Trayectoria de boomerang", "El misterio de Listerdale" y "Telón". Los otros 3 libros son "Poirot en Egipto", "Pasajero para Fráncfort" y "El enigmático Mr. Quin", todos ellos parte de la colección "Selecciones de Biblioteca Oro".
This is just a small glimpse of the extensive collection of works written by the renowned and immortal British writer. Her novels and stories have accompanied me for many years, and through them, I discovered my passion for the mystery and detective genre. So, I'm thrilled to reconnect with the astute and insightful detective Poirot and marvel at his cleverness and brilliance in solving cases.

I hadn't really heard of that collection of books but I hadn't really been focused on mystery either, I hope to give this genre a try later on by reading these books that have so much meaning for you.
I think your husband's gesture of understanding what your interests are and doing whatever it takes to recover the lost books is super sweet.
The mystery and detective genre is truly fascinating, and Agatha Christie turned it into a true gem. I highly recommend it to you.
