Announcement

Happy Holidays, everyone!

This week, before the end of the year and the start of the year, we’d like to explore comics and manga. We’d like to remind everyone that graphic novels have their place in this community. So, that’s why let’s start with this prompt below :

What was the first manga or comics you ever read, and how did it shape your love for the medium?

Thank you to @namiks for suggesting we highlight comics and manga in our community

During the First World War (1914-1918), over 20 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives. Humanity experienced more monumental changes than it had ever before. One of the most significant changes is the development of weapons, for example, bombs and missiles. Before the First World War, before a soldier could kill an enemy, they had to see them first, or at close range. However, with the development of weapons, soldiers during the First World War killed so many enemies, including civilians, from a long-range, using missiles and bombs. This new method of killing was referred to as “Forget" and Fire.” They also made use of drones to attack enemies with poisonous gases. Great countries with significant military powers were involved in the war and some joined forces. Germany and Austria joined forces while Russia, Britain, The United States, and France also joined forces. The Italians were also involved in the war, their main goal was to battle the forces of Germany and the Austrians. This is the historical background in which Ernest Hemingway wrote A Farewell to Arms.

You know that fantasy is my favorite literary genre and without a doubt when I dive into one of these stories there is no one who will pull me out if I like this story very much obviously. For quite some time I had wanted to read a saga that is quite long called Shattet Me, by author Tahereh Mafi. And since I'm a person who loves long sagas, I was super determined that I was going to start it before the end of the year and that's what I did. I read the first book a little over a month ago and I want to tell you how I found the beginning of this story, which is quite different from others I've read before.

Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within is more than just a book about writing; it is also an invitation to connect deeply with oneself and the world through language. For a novice writer such as myself, Goldberg's insights serve as a guiding light that illuminates the complex journey of creativity. Instead of focusing on technicalities, she embraces the honesty and rawness that make writing a process of self-discovery and transformation.

I took a few days from Hive, but also a few days from reading things. I felt I was spending a little too much time reading and wanting to focus on something else a bit, especially with the holidays being around and the general slowness of Hive as everyone celebrates. But I couldn't help myself when I noticed that Absolute Batman's third volume had been released. It's by far my favourite of the current Absolute Batman lineup, with the Absolute Superman coming in at second place. While Absolute Superman's series is clearly going in a certain route as it introduces its new idea of Superman, Absolute Batman feels a bit more in control, something that knows where it's going already and took very little time to show it to us. I've really been enjoying the pacing of the comic alongside its really neat art style that takes things in a more fun direction in terms of character and costume design. Plus, a little more brutality in the realm of DC is pretty much what the comics need. Not the usual tame violence, but all-out gory action that shows a more ruthless Batman coming from a very different background. No more the billionaire man-baby that complains about the state of the world, but more your average young adult that sees the horrors of the world, wanting to do good by working hard but also fighting the evil head-on without a care.

I really wanted to know about Ahmad Babangida and how green a forest he was. There was nothing holding me back from reading it so I decided to do just that. And guess what? That thing I was looking for, I saw it. It was spread out in every chapter of this book. This book I'm about to review is a book by Fatima Bala titled Broken.

I hope you are all doing very well during this end of year period. Who says end of year, says review... You will have understood, it is time to take stock of the books of the year 2024! 📖This year, I read 28 books in total. That's not bad! But it is still 19 less than the year 2023. I am quite happy with my start of the year, I managed to read quite a few pretty cool books, then from July, I could no longer find the time to read as I wanted. 😅

In this story we will meet two people, Olivia Rivera and Noah Merry, who were close friends in childhood, but ended up distancing on bad terms in their adolescence. The bad thing is that they keep seeing each other because Noah's grandparents own the Merry Hotel where they work together. Since there is a bad work climate and the hotel is known for being very family-oriented, Noah's grandparents created an advent calendar with activities that will help foster a cooperative spirit to work as a team and improve working relationships. These activities seem to work for the rest, but not for Noah and Olivia who hate each other to death, but maybe the Christmas season will work its magic and something unthinkable will happen for everyone.

The more I look, the more I find books that I have heard of before and never knew were at home all along. Since it was just lying around in my parent's library, I picked it up, curious to learn what's special about this book for myself. But after finishing a much smaller book that's on creativity, the transition wasn't exactly smooth.

Why did Eric Fromm title this book ‘The Art of Loving’? Eric Fromm said in this book; ‘What is love? Is it active or passive? Which is more important, loving or being loved?’. Those are questions that are questions for all of us, including Eric From. Most people define love as a feeling of liking something and this is a gift or coincidence. For example, suddenly there is a kind of feeling that comes by chance without reason and something, then that is what is called love. Usually people understand that, so the word: ‘Falling in Love’ appears. So the question is, is love really like that?

What is Hive Book Club?

Hive Book Club is a community made by book lovers, for book lovers. A place where the chaotic minds of writers may punch away words from their keyboards as they share their writing adventures. Where passionate book collectors may rummage through their stacks of books to share and review their latest additions. Outside of our regular curation process, we may create contests for our community to participate in, and earn even more from their posts. If you have a certain theme for a future contest you would like to see, let us know! Be sure to check with us frequently on our various social media platforms to avoid missing out!

How Do We Choose The Highlighted Posts?

For those of you curious as to how you may have been chosen or would like to be chosen in the future in one of these compilations: we scan through the community and read the many posts that the community members write. We then select four or five posts that we believe meet certain criteria and are worthy of sharing with the rest of the community. We aim to keep these selections diverse in style, from writing skills or subject matter.

Hence, throughout the week, the moderators will check the community and manually handpick the posts. Some factors include the post subject, post quality, engagement, personal voice, and general effort. If we choose you, or you happen to stumble across these highlights, please do check out the other posts we feature, and contribute to their curation and engagement!
